A to Z Challenge – C for Cyfor Malta

RACES = 24
WINS = 9

PRIZE MONEY = £308,711

A French import for the most powerful team at the time Johnson/Pipe. An awesome horse who won two Paddy Power Gold Cups (then called Murphys and Thomas Pink Gold Cup). He won the Cathcart Novices chase at Cheltenham. After this he influenced the future of the Grand National by winning the John Hughes Trophy Chase over the national fences as just a 5 yo. This resulted in the minimum age for a National horse to be dropped from 7 to 6.

He went on to win his finest moment beating See More Business and Go Ballistic in the Pillar Chase, they had been first and second in the Gold Cup. Only injury ruled him out of that seasons Gold Cup, this injury kept him out until December 2001 when he won at Newbury and then his final victory came in winning the Paddy Power (Thomas Pink Gold Cup).

He was the start of an influx of French horses being bought and being aimed at the staying chases and ultimately the Gold Cup. Without his influence, there may not have been a Kauto Star running in this country.

I’ll leave you with the greatest jump jockey of all time’s quote about him.
“He was the perfect jumps horse, as faultless a jumper as you could have and you couldn’t help fall in love with him”

I know I did, he was one of the first NH horses that I loved to follow and watch.
