Pitmans Derby

Good morning from a wet Sheffield! To be honest I'm thankful for a bit of rain the hayfever has been killing me over recent weeks so any respite is a plus. I had a cracking time at Haydock last Saturday for their evening meeting. Only had one winner and a couple of seconds, the winner Steve Prescott goes again today at Chester – he looks a decent prospect. Anyway on to todays selections and the highlight is the Pitmans Derby today, its a bloody tough race to pick the winner – good luck with it! I'm opting for GLENARD to take the race. He looked progressive last year and has form on this type of ground, will get the trip and has a good each way chance.

CHANCERY 1455 NEWMARKET – (NAP) (3rd – 16-1 = £10.00) this horse has been knocking on the door of late but has also run a few disappointing races when fancied. There are a few ground question marks with some of these today and I'm chancing him to run back to form on ground that should suit. He has to reverse form with BATTALION from that race at Ripon which also had SUEGIOO back in third.

MIDNITE ANGEL 1745 NEWMARKET – (NB) (WON – 9-2 = £14.06) I thought this girl would run better at Royal Ascot. She showed great speed as a juvenile and hasnt met the requirements of the lofty targets she has has. This is a big drop in class and I think she has a cracking chance today.

ROYAL RASCAL 1515 NEWCASTLE – (TREBLE) (2nd -14-1 = £8.75) this filly is another one who has some decent form in the bag. She came just short against BONDESIRE at Chester, who has since run well. Off a mark 7lbs lower than when defeating ODOOJ at York. She has been running well of late, except last time out, but I'm willing to put a line through that. The quicker ground shouldnt be a hinderance, she finished 3rd to RODSHU QUEEN on good to firm. 20-1 is a bonkers price for me as I write this.

GOLDREAM 1610 WINDSOR – (NR) won well for the blog at Newmarket on 1000 Guineas day and then ran creditably on easier ground the next time. This faster surface will bring out the best in him and I'm hopeful of a winning race. Should get a good toe from a few front runners and then with Jimmy Fortune powering him through it could be set up nice for him.

I also like the chances of BODY AND SOUL 1440 NEWCASTLE and I'm intrigued to see how BONNIE GREY 1420 NEWMARKET runs on better ground.

My Dad's selections are :
MUTHMIR 1405 NEWCASTLE (2nd – 9-4 = £1.40)
SAAYERR 1440 NEWCASTLE (unplaced – = -£5.00)
GABRIELS LAD 1530 NEWMARKET (unplaced – =-£5.00)
ANGEL GABRIEL 1550 NEWCASTLE (WON 4-1 = £12.50)

Royal Ascot Day 2

Well the first day wasn't great for the blog! Not even a place other than KINGMAN. Was a cracking first day though and I must take my hat off to SOLE POWER! What a performance that was!

On to Day 2 and hopefully a little more luck!

JERSEY STAKES 1430

Another intriguing contest to get us going. The French have an interesting contender with Frankie on board in REDBROOK and he could improve even more. MUSICAL COMEDY could run a big race and give us a Royal winner but I'm opting for SUDIRMAN who has Group 1 winning form and the softer ground can be offered for the last two lesser performances.

QUEEN MARY STAKES 1505

ANTHEM ALEXANDER (TREBLE) has a great chance to further boost the breeding credentials of STARSPANGLEDBANNER. The way she won at Tipperary suggested greater things to come and with the owner opting for this race for here it further boosts her credentials for me. PASTORAL GIRL should like this ground and could improve on her first run at a huge price.

PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES 1545

I think TREVE will win this despite the latest defeat. However I am fascinated to see who wins out of THE FUGUE and DANK for the place money. I'm opting for DANK to improve again.

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES 1625

SKY LANTERN is key here, if she shows the form of her win here last year she will take some pegging back. However, fillies with a penalty to carry seem to always lose in this race! INTEGRAL has alot going for her and she ran so well for me last time. WOODLAND ARIA could also be around at the end.

ROYAL HUNT CUP 1700

BURANO (NAP) has the credentials for this race. He has only one win to his name but his last two runs have been very eyecatching. He had no real luck in running when in behind at Newbury and then travelled well at headquarters. A big field on this wide track should help him find the space and this race suits a late fast finisher. The draw should help too. NICEOFYOUTOTELLME travelled so well last time when winning and could be the danger.

SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP 1735

MAJEYDA has the class to take this. She ran well in the 1000 Guineas and in a Group 3 too and is top weight for a reason. Class is class and I think she's very good but I'm going against her and against the decisions of Hughes and Dettori and I'm opting for MIDNITE ANGEL (NB) to show her class again. If she reproduces the run behind J WONDER last year and goes up with the pace she could take some pegging back.

Royal Ascot Day One

I start the blog today with news that the horse I have a tiny share in won on his second race course start yesterday. SAKHEE'S RETURN won at a massive 20-1! Lets hope there is a lot more of those for the boy, this time next year he could be at Ascot!!!

Right, time to doff the hat, get the champers out and regail in our land – the royal meeting has arrived. A cracking spectacle of quality horses! I cant wait to watch this week and seeing what stories are made. Below are my day one selections – good luck to all.

QUEEN ANNE STAKES 1430

Toronado will be all the rage and rightly so with his form from last year, but 300 days off could leave him wanting and odds-on won't do it for me. I'm opting for SOFT FALLING RAIN (nb) who has always looked a class horse, the ground continuing to dry out will help his chances further and I think he'll run a huge race.

COVENTRY STAKES 1505

A Paul Hanagan/Al Maktoum double for me. ADAAY was very impressive when winning both starts at Newbury and Yarmouth. There will be more to come from this one and I think he can take this. Mr O'Brien has a decent record in this and War Envoy will be primed for a better run this time.

KINGS STAND STAKES 1545

SHEA SHEA (treble) deserves to win a race like this. He so nearly did last year before SOLE POWER wore him down on the line. I hope my boy will hold on this time with Soumillon in the saddle. HOT STREAK could run a cracker but will probably get Spencer'd and I'm fascinated to see how ES QUE LOVE runs over five!

ST JAMES' PALACE STAKES 1625

I backed KINGMAN in the Guineas and he just failed, he won the Irish equivalent easy and I think he will put NIGHT OF THUNDER in his place in this race. Nothing else to say – go champ!

ASCOT STAKES 1700

I'm not a big fan of these staying races other than the Gold Cup. Nicky Henderson always has to be feared in these, but I really don't fancy any of his. SIZZLER ran a few crackers last year and could be there at the end but I'm opting for VILLA ROYALE who ran so well last time at York and with the stable in form, could run a big race.

WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES 1735

This is a cracking end to the day. I really fancy MIDTERM BREAK (NAP) I watched him run at Ripon first time out and he looked a smart horse. He has since improved further and is proving to be a decent prospect. This is another big step up but one I think he can take. MERDON CASTLE could be the danger with form through KOOL KOMPANY.

GOOD LUCK ON DAY ONE EVERYBODY!

Derby Day

Derby Day today! What a cracking day of racing this is and I just hope the thunderstorms don’t spoil the going or the spectacle. I came very close last week to a big win on the blog with CLEVER COOKIE deadheading at 3-1 and then I had three seconds all beaten by hardly anything! BODY AND SOUL (17-2), SIRIUS PROSPECT (3-1) and ROYAL RASCAL (3-1).

Lets hope today brings a few winners and then its full steam ahead for Royal Ascot! I fancy quite a few horses across the meetings today but have picked 4 who I think have the best chance and the best odds for me! If you’re having a flutter good luck!

HYMENAIOS 1335 EPSOM (NAP) – (3rd – 5-1 = £3.12) this horse defeated CAPE CASTER at Doncaster in March and it won nice and convincingly and went into my notebook. CAPE CASTER has since won and franked the form. More importantly that day my selection had ROMSDAL comfortably beaten, and he’s supplemented for the derby today! Ignore the last run as the ground wasn’t ideal and I expect a much more positive showing today!

LATIN CHARM 1530 MUSSELBURGH (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) has travelled a fair distance to compete in this and he has pretty decent form in the book. Two runs this year have resulted in places with one or two of the others proving too good. Today is his day! One of his conquerors BLACK SCHNAPPS ran well the other week behind WRANGLER at Haydock and that form could prove decisive here. He’s 3 lb higher than that run but I really think he will win this today!

CASPIAN PRINCE 1515 EPSOM (TREBLE) – (WON 9-1 = £28.12) won here over this distance in in April on good to soft and has a good chance of repeating that from a decent draw. He’s albs higher now but for me the key is that Adam Kirby, who won on him in April, is up again, despite SEEKING MAGIC, who has a great chance too, running from the Cox yard. He must fancy this ones chances more and so do I. Cracking race though!

AZAGAL 1645 DONCASTER – (unplaced = -£5.00) I had this filly the other week when she won here in May. She is up 7lbs from that and was entered in a class 1 listed last time. She is not good enough at that level and returns to a more realistic grade today. The ground will be perfect for her and its forecast to have even more rain a tDoncaster which would help her. She could run a big race again at a ridiculous price. The top two in the market keep her price high and I think she will take this today. Kerching!!!!!

I haven’t included the big race in the blog but my selection is the following :

EBANORAN – (unplaced) people are questioning the form off the Derrinstown Trial but for me it always holds up. That day he hung badly right and was disqualified after the post. The camber of the track at Epsom will straighten him up and the extra two furlongs for me will bring out even more improvement . John Oxx is the other factor, he has sent there over for the Derby and two of those, SINNDAR and SEA THE STARS obliged. He obviously thinks this one is good enough and I’d love to see the Aga Khan’s colours win this again.

My Dad’s selections today are – (and he has some catching up to do!)

BLACK SHADOW 1335 EPSOM (2nd – £4.37)

ETON RIFLES 1515 EPSOM (NR)

KINGSTON HILL 1600 EPSOM (2nd – £4.68)

NOTARISED 1530 MUSSELBURGH (unplaced = -£5.00)

Current standings :

FATHER 7-12 SON

Profit – FATHER +£53.31

SON +£177.17

from £2.50 each way stakes on all selections.
