Doffing my cap is the order of the day today to my fellow horse racing friends on here. The #twittergamble boys produced a beauty last week with SOMCHINE winning at 10-1 for @Tonythetyke, WALSER winning at 7-2 for @DazGilbert1 and UNIONISTE winning at 5-2 for @Fernando_RFC2 – spot on boys. Their selections for this week are below! As I say every week the boys are worth a follow! If you had put all four selections in a £1 Lucky 15 you would have had a profit return of £281 – great tipping fellas!
@DazGilbert1 YOUNG DOTTIE 1540 LINGFIELD
@Fernando_RFC2 WARRANTOR 1440 KEMPTON
@LiamKenniford SEGO SUCCESS 1355 WARWICK
@Tonythetyke CLOSING CEREMONY 1425 WARWICK
As for my own fortunes last week, not great is the best summation. Although TRIOLO D’ALENE ran well on poor ground and with Geraghty hardly touching him or making an effort watch him the next time he runs on good ground. Not a bad spectacle today although this is quiet time as we start to head towards trials day and the build up to the festival. Whatever your well earned money is on today, I wish you all the luck in taking some money of our old foe! Game on!
JOIN THE CLAN 1425 WARWICK (NAP) (WON 8-1 = £25.00)
Now as follows of the blog know I am always partial to trying to find a decent price horse in a handicap as my nap when and where one pops up. I think this fella is the answer today, my only real concern is the form of Jonjo O’Neill’s stable, at least he had a winner yesterday though! So why do I put my money on an outsider with not a win for a while! Well he could be really well handicapped today and he has a feather weight on his back. The last two runs he has shouldered 11st 12lbs and 11st 2lbs. He steps rightly so back up in class today and an apprentice taking 10lbs of in weight, so he’s on racing weight of 10st 2lbs. That weight around here in testing ground over 3m 2f could be crucial! Get on!
DELL ‘ARCA 1440 KEMPTON (NB) (unplaced = -£5.00)
he has lots of smart form in the book and I think the distance last time was far too long. He returns to a better target today and he has always promised to be a good thing and has been beaten by SLASH OF GINGE, LAC FONTANA and more recently CONEYGREE an his mark has always stayed high. WARRANTOR could be the danger but I think my home has all the class today.
MICKIE 1355 WARWICK (TREBLE) (unplaced = -£5.00)
she is back down to her last winning mark and has Dickie Johnson back on board, together they have won 3 out of her 4 success. She’s a good solid yardstick over hurdles and HIGHLAND RETREAT put her in her place last time but off level weights in mares only race. That one franked the form again this week and today my selection gets her 3lb allowance back which could make all the difference.
HAWKES POINT 1535 WARWICK (WON 17-2 = £26.56)
He has been given a real chance today! He is 6lbs better off after his Welsh National shambles but to put that in perspective its a 4lb lower mark today thayhn when he was piped by MOUNTAINOUS in the same race last year, just beating TIDAL BAY too. Interestingly today he is tried in first time blinkers, good old MON PARRAIN was the same last week and we know what happened there. This is his best chance of a big race success for me.
My Dad’s Selections are :
AWAYWITHTHEGREYS 1425 WARWICK (PU = -£5.00)
WARRANTOR 1440 KEMPTON (unplaced = -£5.00)
HOWARDS LEAGACY 1515 KEMPTON (unplaced = -£5.00)
CARRUTHERS 1535 WARWICK (PU = -£5.00)
FATHER 5-5 SON
Well what a start to the New Year Cheltenham was! The nap MON PARRAIN (25-1) went in as well as the nb PTIT ZIG (evens) and ROCK ON RUBY (5-2) brought a tasty profit on my Lucky 15!!! I know some of you had MON PARRAIN too and just wanted to say thanks to all of you who made some nice comments via Twitter on Thursday, much appreciated. I am bloody relieved to be honest, it was ages since I had put a good one up here!
So on to the first Saturday of the New Year and it isn’t great to be honest! I’m writing this on Friday as I’m treating Mrs GB to a weekend away for her birthday so will get limited time on Saturday. We’re off to pick her birthday present and then staying in the hotel we got married at, Whitley Hall, near Sheffield, it’s a beautiful place and would encourage any of you to stay there if ever you are up my neck of the woods.
The TwitterGamble guys have gone for
@Tonythetyke Somchine 1405 Wincanton
@Fernando_RFC2 Unioniste 1535 Sandown
@LiamKenniford Earthmoves 1440 Wincanton
@DazGilbert1 Walser 1415 Newcastle
So, good luck everyone again! Let’s hope we have another profitable day!
VOLT FACE 1440 WINCANTON (NAP) (unplaced = -£5.00)
I’ve been waiting for this one since @tonytheTyke tipped him up in our #twittergamble the other month. He cruised into contention and looked all over the winner but then didn’t pick up at all and ended up finishing third. The ground was heavy that day which I think was the main factor, plus it was the first run of the season for him. He’s been raised 3lbs to OR128 for that but I think he will take this and kick on to better things. Kieron Edgar takes a valuable 5lbs off too.
REBEL REBELLION 1515 WINCANTON (NB) (unplaced = -£5.00)
Another class horse dropped in grade and off top weight! He’s slowly dropping to more a reasonable mark, and is only 3lbs higher than he was when competing in top level novice chases last year. He did run off OR150 back in April at Aintree. His mark of OR143 tomorrow is not bad and with the apprentice jockey taking 7lbs off in his claim that could prove to be very valuable. I thought he ran well in the Grand Sefton for a while and had the likes of HUNT BALL and DOLATULO behind. He could make a mockery of this!
TRIOLO D’ALENE 1535 SANDOWN (treble) (3rd 16-1 = £10.00)
The last time this fella ran in a class 2 handicap he smashed JUNIOR by 4 and a half lenghts off a mark of OR139. Since then he has won a Hennessy and ran in both the Gold Cup and Grand National. He is 4lbs lower today than his Gold Cup mark, he will enjoy the ground and the trip will be fine. He has a lot of weight to carry but as I always say in these handicaps, class is class and he’s not top weight for nowt! My only concern is how terrible the yard’s horses have been running! UNIONISTE has to have a great chance but I’m not sure it will be soft enough? BERTIE BORU showed what fight and determination he has after staying on to win well last time. A fascinating race!
AMORE ALATO 1500 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)
Ran in some good races last year and has some decent form in behind the likes of LAC FONTANA and IRVING who have both gone on to better things. He is nowhere near that standard but is a decent handicapper and he showed that last time when just being pipped by a well handicapped SNAKE EYES. Interesting that McCoy is on board today, having beat him. I think McCoy’s pushing and driving style will suit too. Hopeful of another good show.
My Dad’s selections are :
VOLT FACE 1440 WINCANTON (unplaced = -£5.00)
AMORE ALATO 1500 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)
RELAX 1535 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)
BRICK RED 1350 SANDOWN (2nd – 4-1 = £2.50)
Father 5-4 Son
Father = -£4.66
Son = £69.50
Happy New Year everyone! I hope you’re ready for the celebrations this evening, I thought I would do the blog on New Year’e Eve as tomorrow morning we all may have a slight headache! Whatever you are doing tonight, enjoy yourselves and immerse yourself with the people you care about. I wish you all a prosperous and healthy 2015, with many a success from our old foe the bookmaker.
Well I hope everyone has had a wonderful festive period with their loved ones. I know it bloody knackered me as always. I thought I would start the new year with a look back at 2014 and my racing highlights. The number one best thing for the Bandit this year was to finally own a very small share in a racehorse. I can only but thank @ianmallard for this and his efforts with #teamchoochoo. It’s a great venture to be part of and to see a horse you have bit in not only run, but win was a great feeling. I know we have got even bigger plans for the future, bring it on! Make sure you give Ian a follow, top fella and knows his racing!
My second highlight has to be HOLYWELL winning again at Cheltenham. The horse has always been close to my heart especially after I napped him to win at Cheltenham the other year on this blog. Here was the write up – Holywell – I hope he has the credentials to compete in the Gold Cup this year but I think his jumping needs to shape up a bit first!
My final thought for the year was that my old mate and favourite horse of all time TIDAL BAY got a happy retirement! What an enigmatic horse he was, I just wish Paul Nicholls would have had him from the start, I’m convinced he would have won a Gold Cup if he had. He won an Arkle, a Maghull Novices Chase, a Cleeve Hurdle, the Bet365 Gold Cup, the West Yorkshire Hurdle twice and not forgetting that awesome late burst in the Lexus Chase two years ago. He will always be a star for me, happy retirement old fella!
As I write the blog we are already looking on the horizon for the Cheltenham Festival, I think it is something like 10 weeks away, can’t bloody wait. One thing is for sure we will have some more racing treats before then.
I’m hoping the change in a year will change my fortune on here, I’ve been shockingly bad recently and can only apologise to my dedicated followers, my old man is currently whooping my arse in our little competition, tipping up EMPERORS CHOICE more recently too. So here’s to a change in fortunes!
The twitter gamble guys have opted for :
@TonytheTyke Arctic Court 1520 Catterick
@Fernando_RFC2 Zeroshadesofgrey 1210 Cheltenham
@LiamKenniford Ptit Zig 1320 Cheltenham
@DazGilbert1 Diocles 1355 Cheltenham
Here are my selections for New Year’s Day :
MON PARRAIN 1245 CHELTENHAM (NAP) (WON 25-1 = £78.12)
This guy ran a creditable race when I tipped him up in the Becher Chase last time. He jumped very well and Ryan Mahon looked after him once the race was over for him. That can be a stepping stone to success for me in this race. He has been dropped another 2 lbs to a mark of OR142. He drops down a grade and off top weight has every chance with the very talented Sean Bowen taking 5lbs off his back. Top weights normally do well in races like this and I think he will run a big race and jump soundly on ground that will be up his street. The one that really worries me is CADEAU GEORGE, he has been raised 12lbs for his defeat of KNOCKANRAWLEY last time. That horse has franked the form too winning at Newbury the other day, he could be a real improver!
PTIT ZIG 1320 CHELTENHAM (NB) (WON Evs = £4.06)
Won so impressively last time, gaining his third chase success in a row! His jumping was quick and immaculate and he put the well touted JOSSES HILL to the sword. His rival today is CHAMPAGNE WEST who conversely didn’t look that great last time and was made to work a bit for his success. My selection is rated 5lbs better off on the ratings with a mark of OR157 yet they meet here on level weights too. Another solid round of jumping should boost his ankle credentials even further!
CAID DU BERLAIS 1355 CHELTENHAM (TREBLE) (3rd – 5-1 = £3.12)
Was running well in behind when he slipped on landing and was pulled up in the Fish Egg Gold Cup. I really fancied him that day as I was so taken aback by how he won the Paddy Power Gold Cup previously. I really think this horse is one to follow and will produce even better displays. Therefore I have to go with him again. I’m interested too in how SPLASH OF GINGE runs, he was just building a challenge in said Fish Egg Gold Cup when falling. ROLLING ACES is one of my horses I always follow and he ran very well when in behind WISHFUL THINKING earlier in the season, a reproduction of that will give him a sniff, but to be honest I think he is handicapped to his best at the moment.
ROCK ON RUBY 1505 CHELTENHAM (WON 5-2 = £7.81)
Now this is a race! Barring HINT OF MINT a case can be made for all of them. BEAT THAT has potentially the best recent form in the locker with his defeat of DON POLI at Punchestown in April. That one has since won two chases inclusion a Grade One at Leopardstown the other day. BEAT THAT must run well. Both SILSOL and VANITEUX are young pretenders to the throne, with the latter never really impressing me as yet. SILSOL however has impressed me with his ability and attitude and like my selection, he likes a fight! However, class is class and what can you not say about my horse, he is rated superior to most of these and showed now that this trip is more up his street as age catches up to him. He still has his smooth hurdling style and his big heart and over a favourite course he could be hard to peg back. All aboard!!!
My Dad’s selections I will add tomorrow before I re-post the blog.
