Grand National Trial Day

Unknown.jpeg

The Grand National weights were out this week and one that immediately caught my eye was SAUSALITO SUNRISE. He is a decent horse and has a good weight off his current mark. He is running today at Ascot where I expect him to run very well in preparation for the big one. Ive taken an ante post bet of 50-1 for him.

On to today’s action and I’ll start with my national tip who runs in the race he won last year at Ascot; the Swinley Chase at 2:25. I really fancied him too run well in the Peter Marsh chase at Haydock last time but he unseated Dickie early. I thought he ran well at Cheltenham earlier in the year behind Theatre Guide and was starting to get going when hampered. After winning this race last year he ran well behind MANY CLOUDS at Kelso off a mark 8lbs higher than today. He is the same racing weight as winning this last year and seems to enjoy this track and I’m expecting a big run today and that will hopefully set him up nicely for the big one at Aintree.

I fancy FLINTHAM in the Reynoldstown to upset the two market leaders as he will go at it from the front and will love the ground. His price has seriously decreased since last night and he should run a big race.

The big handicap hurdle at 3:00 at Ascot is a cracking puzzle. DOESYOURDOGBITE found the pace and the quality of the Lanzarote too hot last time and this drop back down in class  may allow him to revert to his winning ways. TEMPLEROSS ran a cracker in that race but I feel it was a one-off. DIVINE SPEAR catches the eye after staying on well at Cheltenham last time but I’m taking a punt on CYRNAME at a decent price. He was a good horse in France and ran himself out of his British debut way back in November. Nicholls will have been doing lots of work at home with him and I like to look out for horses he puts away fro a while. Sean Bowen sits so quietly on horses and he will hopefully switch him off in behind; he COULD run a big race!

Onto the best race of the day, The Grand National Trial Chase. I have it down to two. BLAKLION really disappointed me when carrying my sheckles at Wetherby, and despite winning the RSA last year, he hasn’t shown me enough yet and I think this is too much for him. VINTAGE CLOUDs showed last time he can mix it with the big boys and despite falling in the Peter Marsh, ran very well. My two though are KRUZHLININ and VICENTE. The former was tipped by me on this blog for the fixed brush here, and horse for course at Haydock is important. He only found OUR KAEMPFER too good on quicker ground last time. My worry is the consistency and bravery of his jumping and whether this extended trip will suit! VICENTE then, I tipped him to win the Scottish National last year and he is only 1lb higher than that victory today. The ground hasn’t been right for him a few times this year and I thought he ran a cracking race behind a rampant ZIGA BOY last time at Donny. He will appreciate the drying ground and the trip and I think he will run a big race to prep him for the big one at Aintree. He gets my nod over KRUZHLININ.

Not much luck last week on the blog. ZIGA BOY was going well for along way but just couldnt match the others. MIA’S STORM was well in with a chance two out but died away, I think better ground and a flatter track will suit her. THOMAS BROWN was just poor, he was never in it!

So we move on today. A couple of cracking handicaps at Ascot plus a few at Haydock. My first selection is not in one of the televised races. CAPTAIN CONAN has always been a smart horse and he is dropped seriuosly in grade today. He was third three years ago as favourite in the Tingle Creek behind SIRE DE GRUGY and he is a full 20lbs lower than that race today. His rating of OR139 is fair on what he has, or hasnt achieved since, but potentially that is a very low mark for a horse of his ability. He has won on soft ground and won on decent ground so that shouldn’t be an issue.

The Long Walk hurdle is an intriguing race snd UKNOWWHATIMEANHARRY is worthy favourite and he looked very good last time. I cant see BALLYOPTIC reversing places. The main challengers come through the French Champion Hurdle form. Both PTIT ZIG and ALEX DE LARREDYA come with winning form from it and are the big dangers to the fav. The former got put in his place by the French horse last time, however, I think PTIT ZIG on a right handed track and on better grond will prevail today and an early 8-1 is a great price.

The last race on Ascot’s card was formerly the Ladbroke and both JOLLY’S CRACKED IT and STERNRUBIN return again after their epic battle. Both are now on higher marks and I’m not sure they can repeat last year’s heroics. Especially with the former being off for a year. The race will be frenetic with STERNRUBIN, RAYVIN BLACK and UNISON going from the front. They could set it up for one off the pace, although STERNRUBIN as we’ve seen before could make all. However, I’m opting for DIEGO DU CHARMIL to bounce back from his disappointing run last time behind a few of these. He was sent out too early according to his trainer and he ran much too freely. He is suited by coming off the pace, like he did when he won the Fred Winter. He is 8lbs higher than that today but is on the same mark as his previous poor run. I think he still has bags of improvement in him and could run a big race at a huge price.

I put up CORRIN WOOD the other week, and he is now over timber today and again, based on his previous form, he is on a very appealing mark. He beat BLACK THUNDER who was running off a mark in the mid 150s to win that day. His mark today is OR128 and could prove a real handicap snip. Last chance saloon today though!

Happy National Hunt season! It’s been a fair old while since I did a racing blog! Playing football and work being hectic are the main reasons. The former has given way to the latter now; meaning I may have a bit more time to blog again. I trust everyone is well and hopefully I’ll be able to find a nice priced winner here or there.

The Betfair Chase is the feature of the day and it’s a shame there is a reduced field. CONEYGREE has to prove his fitness after a lay off and SILVINIACO CONTI just seems to find one to good here. SEEYOUATMIDNIGHT could run a big race with the ground as it is, however, I do feel he is a bit short of this level. So, I’m opting for CUE CARD, for me he is the best chaser at the moment and this is possibly his last season at this level. He consistently runs well here and with a run under his belt he could be tuned up for this.

The Fixed Brush Hurdle is a cracker and YALA ENKI has got the ground but again I think he’s short of this level. CAID DU BERLAIS ran a cracker last time at Aintree but another 8lbs over a shorter distance will catch him out I think. My bet of the day is KRUZHLININ, he was going well at Aintree but didnt stay the distance at the pace. Today’s shorter trip will help and he’s got a 9lb pull on CAID DU BERLAIS. Blinkers are applied to sharpen him up too.

DODGING BULLETS ran a decent come back race last time I thought. His trainer is rather bullish about him stepping up in trip and today’s ground will certainly suit. The 10lb pull in the weights with GOD’S OWN must give him a great chance.

Selection £5 each way KRUZHLININ 225 Haydock – WON 9-1 = £56.25 (profit)

Well last week was a good one on the blog and I kept up my record in the hurdle race at Warwick, putting up the winner for the third consecutive year, with FLINTHAM (7-1). Hope you were on aswell as BIG JIM (5-1). It was almost a top day but DEFINITLY RED (9-2) could only manage second behind BLACK HERCULES. Hopefully I'm coming into a bit of form and there's a few I fancy today too. The top two races of the day really are crackers leading us to trials weekend next Saturday.

LIL ROCKERFELLER 1425 ASCOT (nap)
What a race this is!! Numerous horses have cracking chances. MONSIEUR GIBRALTAR ran better last time and has far less weight than that run. Today. THEINVAL was very smart last year and returns to hurdles after an average chase debut, and I can't forget ROYAL GUARDSMAN'S last run. I've opted for my guy thoygh based on his class and his very smart form. He reversed places with DEVILMENT when he last won carrying 11st 11lbs. He ran in a much better race at Cheltenham and one was just too good, however he did beat the current World Hurdle champion, COLE HARDEN. Last year he beat Ladbroke Hurdle winner STERNRUBIN twice, giving him 5lbs and 8lbs respectively. He loves a battle, has a big heart and has the class to win this. MONSIEUR GIBRALTAR is his biggest danger.

OTAGO TRAIL 1330 HAYDOCK (nb)
He has gone up a massive 13lbs in the ratings to a mark of OR154 after his smooth, classy success at Chepstow. The ground was awful that day and it will be very heavy today and that will play to his strengths! I cant believe his price based on BRISTOL DE MAI's entry, he hasnt encountered ground like this yet and I think my guy is a very smart prospect.

FINGAL BAY 1515 HAYDOCK (treble)
This guy has jumped really well in his last two runs. Finding SMAD PLACE too good and WAKANDA the same in quite quickly run races. He has the stamina for this and will love the ground and thr stiff finish. You have to jump well here and he does. VIRAK has been very good too but he has gone up another 5lbs in weight here and he's giving my guy 17lbs in weight. That will take its toll up the Haydock hill.

CORRIN WOOD 1300 HAYDOCK
This is an old favourite and was previously a smart horse and he could generate a tidy profit for the blog today. He was a good hurdler and was turning into a smart chaser until having a lay off. He was then thrown in off his old form in top races and it was too much. He is now back in a class 3 hurdle, at a track where he has won at and has smart form. He will get the trip and 20-1 is huge!!

Time to return to the blog and can I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a prosperous 2016. Work has finished nowfor two weeks so I'm looking forward to a chill and a lovely time. Some decent racing again today and I'm banking on a couple of horses I've already out up on here to get their noses infront today!

FINGAL BAY 1500 ASCOT (nap)
I napped him last time when he ran a cracker in the Hennessy. He jumped so well that day and it was only the class of SMAD PLACE and I think the trip, at the pace they went, that caught him out. Dropping back in trip today will help and if he jumps as well as he did last time he has to be up there. I expect him to win today.

SAPHIR DE RHEU 1425 ASCOT (nb)
He's the up and coming next big star and the Hennessy, with the weight he carried, was just a step too far. I'm interested in how he runs back over hurdles today, Big Bucks style. He has beaten REVE DE SIVOLA already over hurdles, he's 4lbs worse off today but I reckon he's nowa better horse and it's not soft enough for Reve!

STERNRUBIN 1535 ASCOT (treble)
This fella has shown some real improvement and looks to be going places! He won nicely last time and he jumps and travels well. He has been raised 6lbs for that win but this is not a race that is too much for him. You need to travel well and more importantly have a turn of pace to get away from the pack on the run in. He has that and could run a big race!

BIG CASINO 1350 ASCOT
I've put this guy up a few times and he jumps so well and I think the distance has caught him out twice now! He's been dropped in trip again today and the track will suit his style and I'm hoping he can keep galloping to the line this time.

Betfair Chase

After a crackingweek at Cheltenham last week the National Hunt bandwagon rolls on with the showpiece chase of the day : The Betfair Chase. I always remember how awesome Kauto Star was in this when he won it for the final time, he murdered them in a performance that will always stay with me, he was magnificent that day! Only one winner for the blog last week in COPPER KAY, but she looks like one to follow this year. A few nice handicaps today to watch aswell as the big event. Good luck if you're having a flutter!

MIJHAAR 1425 HAYDOCK (nap)

I've kept saying that this fella has a race like this in him. He's still on a very attractive mark for me and ran ok last time at Cheltenham. He travels really well but they seem to just get away from him. I think this softer ground and the track will suit him and stop that happening. These fixed brush hurdles will test their jumping but my guy is due to go chasing soon and should be able to cope. He is a huge price but is a smart horse and I think today is the day. I also like the chances of DEFINITLY RED, who has decent track form and looked a smart type last year, he made need the run.

ROCK ON RUBY 1440 ASCOT (nb)

Didnt do bad in his reappearance and this drop back down in trip won't cause any issues. He has to give 8lbs to Brother Tedd but he is used to doing this and the stiff turn for home will suit my guy better. It's a shame the ground is soft for the returning to form COURT MINSTREL, but I don't think he will go in ground this tacky.

HOLYWELL 1500 HAYDOCK (treble)

This is my heart speaking over my head, however he needed the run big time in the Charlie Hall and he is too big a price for me to ignore. He was second in this race the other year and we all know how much he stays in at times in these marathon trips. He doesnt like it too soft but his heart and battling qualities will give him a sniff over the final couple of fences. If his jumping is fluid he will be there at the end.

FAGO 1515 ASCOT

This horse looked decent as a novice a few years agobut his jumping let him down. He has got better with that and I'm interested to see how he runs dropped back in trip on this stiffer track. He will appreciate the ground and could do this very easily, or balls it up and fall.

Charlie Hall Chase and Ascot

Today really sees the National Hunt season kick off in earnest with the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby plus a decent supporting card at Ascot. Most trainers will be happy with the rain that arrived over the past few days although I'm not sure it will have done my old favourite Holywell any favours in the big race. Lots of old favourites are running today and as always at this time of the season most of them need a run in them.
As before I'll have a head to head battle with my dad over the NH season, him being a jumping fan like me.

Sit back and enjoy the action today.

SAM WINNER 1505 WETHERBY (nap)
This horse goes really well fresh and will love the ground. He ran some cracking races last year; winning the Murphy Chase at Cheltenham carrying 11st 10lbs on soft ground. He then beat MEDERMIT and MA FILLEULE at Aintree off a mark of OR156. He proved (to me at least!) that he was a top class staying chaser in the Lexus when he just didnt quite get the trip that day. I'm hoping Sean Bowen will bounce him out from the front here at Wetherby, he may need a sterner test than this three miles. Eight year olds have a decent record in this and I'm hoping of a big run. HOLYWELL knows it's the Autumn and would prefer better ground, I think DYNASTE is the danger.

SIGN OF VICTORY 1450 ASCOT (nb)
Will love this ground and won this easily last year. He is carrying a stone more in weight but he's a high class hurdler in this ground. I'm expecting another dominant run and 5-1 is huge for me!

BABY MIX 1415 ASCOT (treble)
This guy has been knocking recently and again the ground is key. My only doubt is the trip but he did start his novice chasing career over this distance and won a few. He ran well last time and I thought the jockey should have gotten him nearer but saying that he probably needed the run. Today is his day.

ROCK ON RUBY 1400 WETHERBY
The old favourite returns! The question mark against him today is his stamina. I don't think this will be an issue; he has been caught for pace recently in the hot races he used to win and non of these plodders will have that change of gear. Class is class and I think he'll stay and win this well. Staying hurdles will be his arena this year if he does.

After the first Classics passed us by we had the thrills and spills of Chester and now we look forward to the proper Derby trial – The Dante – at York next week. I've not seen anything so far that jumps out as the Derby winner, but we may see something today at Lingfield and next week at York. I'm looking forward to next Saturday as I'm off to the meeting at Doncaster with my family. Hopefully the weather will improve. The handicaps on offer today are ace and I've picked a few big priced ones as always! Hopefully I'll be lucky! Good luck yourselves whatever you're on!

DREAM SPIRIT 1545 ASCOT (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Make no mistakes this fella has class and decent form and despite being a little inexperienced I think he holds the key to this puzzle. He started well last year beating MAVERICK WAVE at Newmarket. That's decent form based on that horse's success beating CANNOCK CHASE at Chester this week. He was then the beaten favourite twice, firstly behind DARK EMERALD, who has performed admirably at Meydan, and secondly behind MOOHAARIB who went out and won a Listed race here beating other horses with smart form lines. My selection has a good draw, will enjoy the ground and could be a much smarter horse than his mark suggests.

ROYAL GUARDSMAN 1525 HAYDOCK (nb) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
This fella is a monster price! For me he has been running well and caught my eye when winning well at Newbury, beating KIAMA BAY. He never really got into his next race behind GASSIN GOLF but he has all the credentials to step up here! He has a very light weight and Sam Twiston on his back too – this will help up the stiff Haydock finish and I think he has a cracking chance.

AZAGAL 1510 ASCOT (treble) (Unplaced – = -£5.00)
She won well last time over this distance and has only been raised 2lbs. That takes her back to another winning mark of OR89. She won this time last year off that at Doncaster and she has the scope to step up and go again!

MON BRAV 1655 ASCOT (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Won a class 3 on good to firm off a mark of OR78, he's three pounds less in this and I'm really interested in Hughsey taking the ride. He's ridden a couple of winners for the yard recently. This horse can be a monkey but can turn it on when the ground is decent and around the mark he's on today.

Quite another profitable week for the blog. Good old JOIN THE CLAN (8-1) and then HAWKES POINT (17-2) rompted in to take some well earned coins off the bookies. I’m hoping I can keep this run going! Lets hope the return of SPRINTER SACRE is a good one today. He’s one of the best chases I’ve seen and just hope he reprodces something near his best today. Fingers crossed. Whatever you are on today, good luck in our weekly battle against our old foe the bookie!
The #twittergamble boys have opted for the following this week. Let’s hope the big one comes in :
@LiamKenniford GARDE LA VICTOIRE 1425 ASCOT
@DazGilbert1 WISHES AND STARS 1555 TAUNTON
@Tonythetyke FISHING BRIDGE 1555 TAUNTON
Here are my four for you

REBEL REBELLION 1535 ASCOT (nap) (WON 12-1 = £37.50)

I know this horse has a race like this in him. I thought he would run much better than he did last time at Wincanton. However, on the back of that the handicapper has lowered his rating another 2lbs to a mark of OR141. That is only 2 lbs higher than his last winning mark. He could be very competitive today on this ground and off this mark. With the jockey taking his allowance off he is effectively running off the racing weight as BALLINVARRIG but rated 8lbd better. This has to be it today! Come on the Rebel!

CORRIN WOOD 1515 HAYDOCK (nb) (PU = -£5.00)

He ran a cracker last time at Wetherby when the weight told giving 8lbs to DOLATULO. He was very assertive from the start and similar tactics are needed today. Interetingly the handicapper had dropped him another pound to a mark of OR 146. That is only 2lbs higher than his last winning mark. With HEY BIG SPENDER in the race he is also a full 10lbs lighter in the saddle than last time

GARDE LA VICTOIRE 1425 ASCOT (treble) (unplaced = -£5.00)

Is the class horse in the race and has some pretty smart form in the book. He beat VANITEUX in the Greatwood and was a respectable 5th in the Ladbroke giving BAYAN 8lbs. While he has to carry alot of weight again today class is class and he can take this today.

BITOFAPUZZLE 1350 ASCOT (WON 5-2 = £7.81)

She is a smart prospect and brought unbeaten bumper form to hurdles and was not disgraced when narrowly beaten by THE PIRATES QUEEN last time. CAROLES SPIRIT is the class horse in the race but having to give 5lbs to and up coming smart one may be too much – or so I hope.
My dad’s selections are :

So the Bandit has finally broken up for his christmas holiday yay! It’s been a hell of a busy one, with the old foe Ofsted making a visit, although I’m pleased to say it was the news we wanted from their visit. The Bandit is very happy and proud of the work of my colleagues and our awesome children. Our team had put our celebrations for this until Thursday gone and boy did we celebrate!!!!

As this is the last blog before our jolly friend pops down our chimneys can I wish all of you who reads and puts up with my ramblings a very merry christmas and a prosperous New Year and I am really grateful for all of you who take the time each week to read and retweet this blog, means a lot! My twitters gamble friends have selected their best bets for today and they’re hoping for a profitable day! Good luck with whatever you’re selecting today and lets hope we all win a bit of our old enemy to line our wallets for the Christmas shenanigans!

The Twitter Gamble bet :

@TonyTheTyke Absolutely Bygones 1245 Ascot

@DazGilbert1 Sound Investment 1500 Ascot

@Fernando_RFC2 Puffin Billy 1315 Ascot

@LiamKenniford Zarkandar 1425 Ascot

Here are my best four for today :

FIREBIRD FLYER 1405 HAYDOCK (NAP) – (unplaced – £5.00) I backed this guy first time out over hurdles the other week and he didn’t disappoint on ground similar to today. It’s going to be pretty bad ground at Haydock and this guy will sluice through it. His mark is pretty good and hasn’t shifted after his hurdles success so he could still be well in. He normally takes a while to get going and to win first timeout was unusual so there is possibly more to come, I hopeful of a very big run!

RUN RUNCTIONS RUN 1440 HAYDOCK (NB) – (2nd – 100-30 = £2.08) this guy impressed me loads last time here at Haydock over the distance today and only ON TOUR got near him then and he had some pretty smart horses well behind. The ground will be fine and his 3lb rise is fair and I think he will run a big race again today.

GASSIN GOLF 1530 ASCOT (TREBLE) – (PU = -£5.00) this horse has always had a race like this in him. He always seems to come second and never quite wins! He has yet to win a hurdle race but I think he has been targeted specifically at this and then the future races after. He has lots of great form in the bag with the likes of VIBRATO VOLTAT and others being behind him in his races. He could be on a very winnable mark and the ground shouldn’t be a problem. I love a big handicap and trying to solve it and I’m hoping I have found a nice priced solution!

ZARKANDAR 1425 ASCOT – (2nd – 4-6 = £0.41) is a smart horse and won well last time France with REVE DE SIVOLA behind. I can’t see that form being reversed and I think he is also too good for AUBUSSON. Should be a straightforward success.

My Dad’s selections are :

LAST SHOT 1350 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

FILL THE POWER 1405 HAYDOCK (3rd 5-1 = £3.12)

RIVER DEEP 1440 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
