Cheltenham Day Two

Well what a cracking first day that was. Despite only having a little wager on Holywell I was so pleased to see the little horse get up and win, I also gave a positive pointer to the second in the race too. It was a day of hitting the crossbar with TRIFOLIUM, MYTENTORYOURS and AHYAKONWYERSELF all placing. Really sad to see that Our Connor had to be put down to, such a sad sight. Thoughts go to all his connections. Lets hope there are no casualties on day two.

Neptune Investment Novices Hurdle

The race can only go one way for me, although how many times have we said that! FAUGHEEN has been nothing but impressive this year and seems to get better with every run and the more I look at the race the more I can’t see any horse beating it. David Pipe reckons RED SHERLOCK was his best chance of the week prior to day one, and he has down nothing wrong so far. I think FENNELL BAY may also run on for a place after two steady introductions from a decent flat performer. For me though its Mullins and Walsh again here.

SELECTION – FAUGHEEN (NB) (WON 6-4)

DAD’S SELECTION – FAUGHEEN (WON 6-4)

RSA Chase

This looks a really competitive race as ever. CORRIN WOOD was one I was really impressed with earlier this year, but I think the ground has seriously scuppered his chances. BLACK THUNDER at a big price could run a cracker back on ground he will prefer but there are doubts about whether he has the class for me. MORNING ASSEMBLY could be the real dark horse in the race, he has looked very good but again the ground is an unknown, if he handles it he could well take this. I’m opting for GEVREY CHAMBERTIN he really needed the run last time and just petered out tamely after putting himself in a good position. He was a smart hurdler and for me the improved ground will be the telling factor. I think he is a bit of a forgotten horse because of his last run and a few poor ones before that. With good ground forecast though I can see him running a big race at a big price.

SELECTION – GEVREY CHAMBERTIN (unplaced)

DAD’S SELECTION – MORNING ASSEMBLY (3rd – 9-1)

CORAL CUP

As always this is an ultra competitive affair and if you get get the winner of this you will have down well and have a decent priced horse. DELL ARCA seems to be one of the favourites and he has solid form, as did CLONDAW KAEMPER before some low key efforts this season, however he did seem to return to form last time out. My selection though is COTTON MILL, again something of a forgotten horse because of what was a bit of a mysterious season last year. He ran nowhere near his best and remember this guy was travelling just as well as SIMONSIG a couple of festivals ago before unseating Denis at one of the last few flights. Again for me the key here is the ground, he is a really smart mover and on good ground has a good turn of foot which is so important in the race. It’s good to see him try this distance again to, the 2m and 2m1f he’s been competing in is too short for him in my opinion. He’ll run a big race I’m sure and I can’t believe he’s 25-1 as I type this. He has run decent races behinds MYTENTORYOURS and MELODIC RENDEZVOUS and I think he is a much better horse than his current mark.

SELECTION – COTTON MILL (NAP) (unplaced)

QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE

This is one of my favourite races of the week, class horses travelling so quickly and jumping so big and brave. What a spectacle it is. Mullins and Walsh are fancied again, but I don’t think the track will suit. CAPTAIN CONAN has the ability but I think will be found out for pace and while SIRE DE GRUGY has done nothing wrong for connections, this is the Queen Mother Champion Chase and for me he’s not good enough. My selection is HINTERLAND, I was really impressed with how he travelled and jumped last time and put him straight in my book for this race. I think he’ll fly around and take this race.

SELECTION – HINTERLAND (UR)

DAD’S SELECTION – CAPTAIN CONAN (PU)

CROSS COUNTRY CHASE

Never really bother about this race, but if I was forced to to pick one, on the forecast ground and on the back of impressive funds in similar races BALTHAZAR KING gets the vote.

SELECTION – BALTHAZAR KING (WON 4-1)

DAD’S SELECTION – BIG SHU (3rd 3-1)

FRED WINTER JUVENILE HURDLE

IVAN GROZNY was a smart performer in France and he brought that form over with him when winning a Naas. He then ran very below par last time out behind GUITAR PETE. The ground tomorrow should suit him better and I think My Wylie has another class horse on his hands here. CLARCAM interests me at a decent price and GOODWOOD MIRAGE could run a big race for the champ.

SELECTION – IVAN GROZNY (unplaced)

WEATHERBY’S CHAMPION BUMPER

Again not really a race I bet on as I don’t really get involved with bumpers. Mr Mullins has one hell of a record in this and he is mob handed here again, but I’m opting for SILVER CONCORDE (WON 16-1)to take this.

Good luck on day two!

Cheltenham Open Day One

The open meeting signals the return of National Hunt with a bang! Its a cracking meeting but also trappy. Not all horses are fit, the ground varies yet the action is superb. I'm away for the weekend so thought
I'd do a blog for Friday instead. Enjoy the racing whatever you gamble on!

UNCLE JIMMY 1440 CHELTENHAM (nap) – this horse is potential improver in the hurdle field this year. He kicked things off well last year defeating MEGANISI at Fontwell. He has been pitched in a class 2 level prior to this and has run creditably, especially when just being pipped by KANGAROO COURT. He has some form on this ground and could run a big race as I think the hill will bring out some of his stamina in the finish.

BALTHAZAR KING 1515 CHELTENHAM (nb) – has a good course and distance record and will relish the sound surface. Has looked better than ever over the past year and I expect another big run.

ROBERTO PEGASUS 1550 CHELTENHAM (treble) – has the potential to be a decent horse and wasn't bad on the flat. He has ran pretty well on both starts including this time last year behind THE ROMFORD PELE. The trainer has taken this before with a similar sort and he could be a springer and one to follow.

OH CRICK 1335 CHELTENHAM – is on a mark tomorrow that appeals, especially considering he won here off that mark a few years ago. Will enjoy the ground and could have been overlooked here, ran pretty well at Aintreee a couple of starts ago and was potentially a smart horse in the making, his mark has slipped but the ability is still there.

Saturday selections

This time last year I backed the enigmatic TIDAL BAY when he won the Bet365 Gold Cup and he has gone from strength to strength since then and I still reckon he would have had a decent chance in the Gold Cup too. I hope I have found another winner of this curtain raiser again today. Next week see's the first Classic's of the season and lets hope we have more positive news to report on rather than the Al Zarooni affair. The week after I'm back at Warwick races for their evening meeting which I cant wait for!

On to today here are my best three plus a few others that I'm putting my well earned crust on. All the best of you're having a flutter today!

BALTHAZAR KING 1550 SANDOWN (nap) – (PU) travelled pretty well in the National and if that hasn't taken too much out of him he has a great chance here. Horses that have run in the National have a decent record in this and so does Phillip Hobbs. The drying ground will be in his favour and he is a cracking each way bet. A steady run from the front will see him thereabouts.

WISHFUL THINKING 1440 SANDOWN (nb) – (3rd – 5-1) ran well in the Champion Chase behind the Aeroplane and despite a pretty poor course record he has displayed better performances this year. SANCTUAIRE won this so impressively last year but he is not the same horse this year and all the messing around with tactics on how to try and defeat Sprinter Sacre may have had a detrimental effect.

AL KAZEEM 1515 SANDOWN (treble) – (WON 9-4) won well first time out last year when I backed him, injury prevented any more runs, however, if he has fully recovered the form alone of that race should see him take this. He also has form over this distance too, big chance!

GRANDAD'S HORSE 1405 SANDOWN – (unplaced) this horse is cracking value in my opinion. He was a good novice and ran in some good races with 5 wins too. A lengthy absence needed to be overcome last time and he needed that run. He has better ground today and has a great chance.

INVINCIBLE HERO 1420 RIPON – (unplaced) ran well last year in four starts after a successful year prior to that. His comeback run at Doncaster was decent and that should have him spot on for this and is getting bags of weight from the others.

DAZINSKI 1455 RIPON – (unplaced) is back on his last winnnig mark today after a few disappointing runs last year. I followed him in all of those too, he has the abiltiy to take this and the ground will help, hopeful of a big run today!

UNMOOTHAJ 1705 LEICESTER – (WON – 6-5) his fourth in a pretty decent maiden last year is by way the best form here. He was a bit green that day in the final stages and lost third at the post. With more experience under the belt a reproduction of the run should take this comfortably.

ES QUE LOVE 1930 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) after tipping him up on here about a step up to a mile his performance in the Spring Cup was a little disappointing. A drop back to seven on this quicker track will help him today and he's,top weight for a reason.

Grand National Day

Here it is, the biggest racing spectacle in the world. Hundreds of thousands of pounds will be bet, millions of people around the world will watch. I really love this race as it is so exciting, this race irritates me though as I haven't picked the winner since Rhyme n Reason! Lets hope today is my day!

You can read my selections below, but these are my National bets, all each way of course!

ON HIS OWN
BALTHAZAR KING
CHICAGO GREY

Whatever you back lets hope they all get round safe.

ON HIS OWN 1615 AINTREE (nap) – (FELL) this is what carries my main money today in the race. I backed him last year when he was going well before falling at Becher's second time around. He is a sound jumper though and moves well through his races. He hits most of the trends other than experience, I reckon he has a huge chance. I am also putting some coins on CHICAGO GREY, he is another sound jumper and stays all day. With the better ground I have also had to have a bet on BALTHAZAR KING who will love the ground, the trip and he goes well fresh.

OPENING BATSMAN 1525 AINTREE (nb) – (PU) he won for me on my blog last time out at Kempton when he was given a peach of a ride and he jumped them silly. I think he will take all the stopping again today in similar conditions. He is a progressive horse and his rise for his Kempton success is indicative of that. Huge run expected!

OVERTURN 1415 AINTREE (treble) – (2nd – 11-4) the ground was the excuse in the Arkle and with todays better ground we should see the true Overturn. He will jump well and travel strongly from the front I think.

UTOPIE DES BORDES 1335 AINTREE – (3rd – 9-2) won well at Sandown and Doncaster before the Festival. That day I think they chose the wrong race as 3 miles was too far. This distance is better and DODGING BULLETS and UP AND GO could set this up for him over the last.

HOLYWELL 1450 AINTREE – (2nd – 9-1) this horse owes me nothing after coming in for me when I napped it at Cheltenham. This is a huge step up in class but I think he has the quality to bridge the gap. His battling attitude will keep him in the race and I'm excited to see how he runs against these better horses. A damn good each way chance at least!

MAKBULLET 1710 AINTREE – (unplaced) I used to follow is one on the flat and he needs good ground and a fast pace. He has been off for a long time but this race may just be perfect for him. 25-1 is a huge price.

VAGO COLLONGES 1740 AINTREE – (2nd – 10-1) this one will turn into a smart hurdler I reckon but his stable have held off with this race in mind. He ran well last time at Newbury and that is pretty decent form. My only doubt is the ground!
