Haydock and Ascot

Happy National Hunt season! It’s been a fair old while since I did a racing blog! Playing football and work being hectic are the main reasons. The former has given way to the latter now; meaning I may have a bit more time to blog again. I trust everyone is well and hopefully I’ll be able to find a nice priced winner here or there.

The Betfair Chase is the feature of the day and it’s a shame there is a reduced field. CONEYGREE has to prove his fitness after a lay off and SILVINIACO CONTI just seems to find one to good here. SEEYOUATMIDNIGHT could run a big race with the ground as it is, however, I do feel he is a bit short of this level. So, I’m opting for CUE CARD, for me he is the best chaser at the moment and this is possibly his last season at this level. He consistently runs well here and with a run under his belt he could be tuned up for this.

The Fixed Brush Hurdle is a cracker and YALA ENKI has got the ground but again I think he’s short of this level. CAID DU BERLAIS ran a cracker last time at Aintree but another 8lbs over a shorter distance will catch him out I think. My bet of the day is KRUZHLININ, he was going well at Aintree but didnt stay the distance at the pace. Today’s shorter trip will help and he’s got a 9lb pull on CAID DU BERLAIS. Blinkers are applied to sharpen him up too.

DODGING BULLETS ran a decent come back race last time I thought. His trainer is rather bullish about him stepping up in trip and today’s ground will certainly suit. The 10lb pull in the weights with GOD’S OWN must give him a great chance.

Selection £5 each way KRUZHLININ 225 Haydock – WON 9-1 = £56.25 (profit)

£5 win DODGING BULLETS 205 ASCOT – PU = £5 lost

Betfair Chase

After a crackingweek at Cheltenham last week the National Hunt bandwagon rolls on with the showpiece chase of the day : The Betfair Chase. I always remember how awesome Kauto Star was in this when he won it for the final time, he murdered them in a performance that will always stay with me, he was magnificent that day! Only one winner for the blog last week in COPPER KAY, but she looks like one to follow this year. A few nice handicaps today to watch aswell as the big event. Good luck if you're having a flutter!

MIJHAAR 1425 HAYDOCK (nap)

I've kept saying that this fella has a race like this in him. He's still on a very attractive mark for me and ran ok last time at Cheltenham. He travels really well but they seem to just get away from him. I think this softer ground and the track will suit him and stop that happening. These fixed brush hurdles will test their jumping but my guy is due to go chasing soon and should be able to cope. He is a huge price but is a smart horse and I think today is the day. I also like the chances of DEFINITLY RED, who has decent track form and looked a smart type last year, he made need the run.

ROCK ON RUBY 1440 ASCOT (nb)

Didnt do bad in his reappearance and this drop back down in trip won't cause any issues. He has to give 8lbs to Brother Tedd but he is used to doing this and the stiff turn for home will suit my guy better. It's a shame the ground is soft for the returning to form COURT MINSTREL, but I don't think he will go in ground this tacky.

HOLYWELL 1500 HAYDOCK (treble)

This is my heart speaking over my head, however he needed the run big time in the Charlie Hall and he is too big a price for me to ignore. He was second in this race the other year and we all know how much he stays in at times in these marathon trips. He doesnt like it too soft but his heart and battling qualities will give him a sniff over the final couple of fences. If his jumping is fluid he will be there at the end.

FAGO 1515 ASCOT

This horse looked decent as a novice a few years agobut his jumping let him down. He has got better with that and I'm interested to see how he runs dropped back in trip on this stiffer track. He will appreciate the ground and could do this very easily, or balls it up and fall.

Right after a week off last week due to The Bandit being on a bender in Leeds the blog returns with what can only be described as a fantastic day of racing. The likes of FAUGHEEN, THE NEW ONE, SILVINIACO CONTI, MENORAH all on show, sit back and enjoy the best that National Hunt can throw at us today if nothing else. The previous blog bore a little fruit for us at long last with POLLY PEACHUM (6-1) showing us what a talented mare she is, one to watch for the future. I also thought OPENING BATSMAN ran so much better and showed some of his old sparkle and I’ll be interested to see where he goes next and interestingly the handicapper raised him 3lbs for that run.

So on to today, firstly I asked some of my twitter followers to put up their best bet of the day, this was the result. Make sure you put a few shekels on this and give each of them a follow if you’re a twitterati.

Shotavodka 1535 Haydock from @Tonythetyke (unplaced)

Fletchers Flyer 1225 Ascot from @Fernando_RFC2 (WON 11/10)

Volnay de Thaix 1425 Haydock from @LiamKenniford (4th – 3/1)

Silviniaco Conti 1500 Haydock from @DazGilbert1 (WON – 100/30)

@Theknibbler also came in for Taquin de Seuil 1500 Haydock

Let’s hope my fellow twitter friends show us the way!!

UNCLE JIMMY 1425 HAYDOCK (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) this guy has been on my radar for a few years and he has been performing admirably. This is a step up for him but the trip and the ground will suit him, he won’t mind the soft underfoot conditions and if anything I think it will bring out more improvement in him and he reminds me of HOLYWELL a few years ago. He is a ridiculous price and is a cracking each way chance, but I reckon he will in it. His run at Aintree behind PECKHAMECHO was a good comeback and will have set him up nicely for this. He also defeated SOUND INVESTMENT by 4 and a half lengths at Newton Abbot in early October and look at how impressive he was over the bigger obstacles last time out. Lump on I reckon he will take this today!

TAQUIN DE SEUIL 1500 HAYDOCK (NB) – (PU = -£5.00) I really do like this horse and he performance was little scratchy in the Charlie Hall but he has always looked a class horse for me and one that will compete at the top level. Having Geraghty in the saddle will help steady him and his patient style will suit. The cheekpieces will also aid his cause to and I think today is the day that he shows his full potential. I think Cue Card will flatten out up the hill and he will battle it out with SILVINIACO CONTI for the honours

AL FEROF 1405 ASCOT (TREBLE) – (WON – 5-2 = £7.81) he is without doubt a class horse and even though Nichols hasn’t been that bullish about him I still think he will take this. He goes well fresh and ultimately has Ruby back on board who knows him inside out. The ground should be fine and if he is being aimed to be tip top for Kempton then really he has to win this to have any chance there! He has won the past three seasons on his reapperance!

EMPERORS CHOICE 1245 HAYDOCK – (2nd – 11/2 = £3.43) loves the mud big time! Has top weight and you never know what you may get but boy can he paddle through the mud! He ran a cracker behind RIGADIN DE BEAUCHENE here in February in a much better race than this and before that beat FIREBIRD FLYER in heavy ground over 3 and a half miles. That horse rompted in yesterday so he has strong form in the bag. I’m hoping he has too much ability for some of his rivals today. Not top weight for nowt!

My Dad’s selections are :

LYVIUS 1315 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)

BIG EASY 1425 HAYDOCK (2nd – 13-2 = £4.06)

SILVINIACO CONTI 1500 HAYDOCK (WON 100/30 = £10.41)

ULCK DU LIN 1515 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

Betfair Chase Day

This time last year I was recovering from ankle surgery and was brightened up by a magnificent round of jumping by the legend that is Kauto Star wiping the floor with his rivals in the Betfair chase. I love the picture above of one of his awesome jumps that day – just look how extended he is – what a horse. It's fitting that a statue has been cast of him, and why not, he's the best NH horse in my lifetime! Today sadly there is no legend but there is a chance for a new legend to be born, keep reading below for my tip for the race and my other bets.

I'm putting my well earned coins into two Lucky 15's today that incorporate a couple of decent priced outsiders too. The heavy ground (and it's banging it down at Ascot as I type this) is a real leveller of form, especially around a gruelling circuit like Haydock.

Here's the first and main one :

Lamb or Cod 12.55 Haydock (nap) (unplaced) was impressive last time out at Chepstow under this jockey and he has been raised 6lbs for that. He has bags of scope and I reckon will improve again and beat these today. Black Thunder is the danger but I'm not having 3-1 in this competitive field.

Merigo 1400 Haydock (nb) – (unplaced) I love this horse and whilst he seems to be better in the spring he is an out and out stayer and three miles today in this ground will feel like four. He has won on heavy over 3 and 4 miles, and Timmy Murphy rides him so well. He could be the forgotten horse here today and is a great each way chance. Check out this photo of him from last year before his Scottish National success – he's just saying look how good I am

Holywell 1430 Haydock (treble) – (2nd – 10-1) has been crying out for this extended trip and I thought he ran a cracker last time at Aintree if given a little too much to do. I can see him staying on in the last few furlongs and takng this.

Silviniaco Conti 1505 Haydock – (Won 7-4) this horse was ultra impressive in the Charlie Hall and could be the next star out of the Nicholls yard. Any horse that wins at Wetherby is more than able of winning at Haydock as the tracks are so alike. Long Run is not the same horse as his Gold Cup winning year as proved last year and to be frank he never will be with Waley-Cohen on board.

The second Lucky 15 is below :

Petitfour 1540 Haydock – (unplaced) goes very well fresh and will appreciate this slog, has a good engine and should stay well and be involved. Has been backed a bit this morning too. Better over hurdles but I'll take a chance on him.

For Non Stop 1410 Ascot – (2nd 100-30) you couldn't be anything but impressed with his commanding victory in the Old Roan Chase and while Finian's Rainbow has undoubted class, the four pound pull on what will be heavy ground may take its toll

Balbriggan 1310 Ascot – (3rd 9-4) was impressive at Bangor last time and this increased trip shoud help and he is a potential improver. Mick Channon has started off well since taking Henrietta Knight's string.

Drawnfromthepast 1425 Lingfield – (3rd 3–1) one of my old favourites who has won me some big money at big prices. Is ultra consistent at the moment and whilst stall 9 isn't ideal today he will run on to at least a place. He's been really unlucky the last few and just got pipped, I'm hoping his luck will change today.

There will go then, hope I've identified a few winners and if you are having a bet please do so within your means. Kick back and enjoy this great feast of racing today.
