It’s been about four weeks since I last did a Saturday blog, all the way back to the Stewards Cup! A nice summer holiday in Dorchester and France was the reason for this gap. After lots of vin rouge, croissants and sun, I’m refreshed and ready to go! The National Hunt season is looming upon us now and already I’m getting excited for that. We still have Champions Day, the St Leger, Cambridgeshire to name a few to still tackle though.

A new addition to the blog this time around will be to profile class horses of years gone by. I’m open to suggestions from anyone, so if you’ve got a favourite horse you want me to include on here just give me a shout on twitter and I’ll put it up for you. Today I start with a horse that was my first cliff horse as a teenager getting into racing. He gave me a few good runs for my money and made me start to love the National Hunt game.

Challenger Du Luc – Bay Gelding

Owned by David Johnson Trained by Martin Pipe

40 runs – 7wins, 9 2nds, 3 3rds.

Total Prize money won – £191, 440

Big Race wins

Cathcart Challenge Cup March 1996 – Cheltenham

Murphy’s Gold Cup – Nov 1996 – Cheltenham

He didn’t win anything too major but it was always his battles with Señor El Betrutti that captivated me, he was a brave horse and I had backed him in the National when Earth Summit won, unfortunately he fell that day. A top little horse who got me going in this sport of kings!

On to the blog and today’s selections!

BEAU NASH 1455 CHESTER (NAP) – (3rd – 9-1 = £5.62) excuses last time for the poor run came due to the ground. He is a proven perfumer on ground that is soft. If you look back in the form book over the past few months there are some decent sippers of good runs. One particular run to take note of is his thirds to Wee Jean at Goodwood, it was an eye-catching run and considering how well the winner then went on to run at Royal Ascot in the Sandringham and then just being pipped at Sandown, my selection has to have a great chance today! I think he is better than his current mark and I’m hopeful of a very big run today.

KINGSGATE NATIVE 1425 BEVERLEY (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) definitely a heart selection, I love this old guy! He normally these days wins one or two races a season and he’s been unlucky a few times this season. On his A game he would trounce this lot. I think the track will really suit him and Tony Hamilton is a great jockey booking. He’s been dropped 2 lbs in the ratings for the first time in over 15 months, interestingly to a mark he won off! Big chance today!

COCK OF THRE NORTH 14.40 SANDOWN (treble) – (unplaced = -£5.00) the ground is key for me today in this. While AKTABANTAY and FUTURE EMPIRE are clearly smart horses, I’m not so sure about the ground for them. My selection has some smart form in the bag too, I watched his trounce the Brocklesby field on Lincoln day and then he ran second to the very smart TIGGY WIGGY on soft ground, not form to be dismissed. He could run a big race today at a very appealing price.

FIRST POST 1730 SANDOWN – (unplaced = -£5.00) 3 wins here and he is now back to a winning mark and he’s been dropped a further albs from his last winning mark. The ground will also help and he has been running really consistently of late on soft ground with a 2nd and two thirds. Today is his day!

I also reckon GABRIAL 1530 CHESTER could make fools of them today and WHERE THE BOYS ARE 1540 BEVERLEY has a good chance a following up.

My Dad’s selections are :

BALLESTEROS 1410 CHESTER (3rd – 6-1 = £3.75)

APOSTLE 1455 CHESTER (unplaced = -£5.00)

WHIPLASH WILLIE 1530 CHESTER (2nd – 11-4 = £1.71)

FORGOTTEN HERO 1550 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

Father £32.57

Son £190.89

Haydock and The Temple of Doom

Here we go again with a monster scoop 6! Lets hope it goes today, and I hope it goes to a £2 line or a small syndicate of 'normal' people and not the rich guys who have put thousands on to bet. Not had chance to do a Saturday blog for a while. My selections are below and I've got my daughter to select a scoop 6 too!
POWERFUL PRESENCE 1525 CATTERICK (nap) – (2nd – 12-1 = £7.50) this horse ran well at Ripon. On his first start and I fully expected him to win next time out but he disappointed. He returns here in a lower class race and his record is impressive here 1211.
BIG BREAK 1555 CURRAGH (nb) – (unplaced = -£5.00) she has a few decent runs on softer ground and the stable are in good fettle at the moment. She could be a horse to follow this year and I'm hopeful of a big run!
MIDTERM BREAK 1540 BEVERLEY (treble) – (WON – 11-4 = £8.59) followed up a good second to ROUDEE at Roipon with a good win at Southwell. Comes here in good form and really fancy his chances
SHORE STEP 1405 HAYDOCK – (2nd – 12-1 = £7.50) I always try to find a decent priced handicap horse and I think I've found it for today. This horse has won on better ground than this but also has run on good ground. Im hopeful the softer ground won't be an issue. He ran CAPO ROSSO close last year at Warwick and then followed that up with a success. CAPO ROSSO won again last weekend and this horse could have more in the tank!
My daughter's scoop6!
Leg 4 – MARCH
Here are my Dad's selections
GO FAR 1405 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
HOT STREAK 1440 HAYDOCK (WON 9-4 = £7.03)
JOYEUSE 1510 HAYDOCK (WON 3-1 = £9.37)
FIRST FLIGHT 1545 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
Current standings : FATHER 7-10 SON
PROFIT – SON = £141.26 FATHER £68.81

Saturday selections

Well the less said about my selections yesterday the better, not even a place! Onwards we go with some sorrow in my heart, the reason for this is my six week holiday has come to an end and I'm back at work on Monday! Let's hope I can find a few winners today to cheer me up!
BOBOWEN 1555 NEWTON ABBOT (nap) – (unplaced) he is up 9lbs for his very impressive win in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. He won that very comfortably that day and looked like a horse on the up. Put a line through his run at Galway in the plate as he was never travelling and I'm not sure the ground suited.
LUPO D'ORO 1405 SANDOWN (nb) – (unplaced) beat Rocket Rob here in June and that form is rock solid after that horse bolted clear yesterday, it may have been in a lesser race but this guy also ran creditably behind the pressive Glen Moss last time out and I think he has a great chance today.
BAILEYS JUBILEE 1430 BEVERLEY (treble) – (unplaced) this horse was my initial fancy for the 1000 Guineas on the back of some impressive performances as a two year old. She ran no race in the Nell Gwyn and something was clearly amiss as she hasnt been out since. Despite her poor draw I think she has a great chance and has bags of speed plus battling qualities, and three year olds have a decent record in this race too.
DOCTOR PARKES 1420 CHESTER – (unplaced) is a course and distance winner and the ground and draw to suit today. He ran well and caught my eye when staying on in the final furlong behind Bogart last time at York. From his draw today he should be up with the pace which should benefit.
ES QUE LOVE 1455 CHESTER – (3rd – 7-2) this horse deserves to win a race soon! They've tried enough! He has a good draw today and is the class horse in the race. Being ridden prominent has really helped him and that should boost his chances today, he may be hard to pass in the Chester straight.
TEMPEST FUGIT 1530 CHESTER – (unplaced) will stay the trip and could have been overlooked by a few today. He travels nicely and didjust that when winning at Lingfield in a Lister race last time.
MERCERS ROW 1505 BEVERLEY – (unplaced) has a cracking record here and especially with Danny Tudhope on board. Ran well a couple of runs ago behind Bondi Beach Boy and has a solid each way chance today.
ASATIR 1550 SANDOWN – (unplaced) will appreciate the ground today and should improve more for the step up in distance after winning quite nicely over a mile. A decent priceto bounce back today.

Scorchio Saturday Tips

What a scorching day it is again today and blue skies dominate the scene here in sunny Sheffield. Terribly sad news this week came from the sport we love and lets hope Brian Toomey pulls through and makes a full recovery. Puts it into perspective what jockeys go through to bring us this sport we love. Thoughts with his family and friends.
On to today's races. One of the most competitive Eclipses for a while with not much seperating most of the field on ratings. Here are my selections today plus my Bandit's treble as normal.
CAPO ROSSO 1640 HAYDOCK (nap) – (unplaced) this horse won impressively at Warwick on quicker ground in early May and then ran well in defeat here at Haydock after that. The Brittania was too far and too competitive and this return to 7f on quick ground will play to his strengths from the front. He's dropped a pound from that and is only a pound higher than when being beat here by SO BELOVED.
KINGSGATE NATIVE 1405 SANDOWN (nb) – (2nd – 17-2) ran his no show race last time at the Royal meeting and this drop in grade and quicker ground will help him. He was running in great form prior to Ascot and a reproduction of that will see him take this. The quicker the ground the better for him!
THE FUGUE 1550 SANDOWN (treble) – (unplaced) I thought she ran a decent race at Ascot and it will have brought her on leaps and bounds. The girls don't have a great record in this but I think she will take this. She will love the ground and will be a lot closer come the furlong pole and she can storm past them.
WOODLAND ARIA 1515 SANDOWN – (unplaced) she was impressive first time out and looks a filly to watch. The mile is her optimum trip and I fancy her beat NARGYS here, my only worry is the ground may be too quick for her.
As well as these four I'm going with the following four in an each way Lucky 15.
BANOFFEE 1455 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) won very well at Chester and then was supplemented for the Oaks where the track and more importantly the ground beat her. On a faster surface here she should show her true form.
ES QUE LOVE 1440 SANDOWN – (2nd – 16-1) here I go again with my cliff horse! However, he has run really well of late and this mile wihich will be run quickly should suit and 25-1 on his Royal Ascot form is huge in my opinion.
HANOVERIAN BARON 1530 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) another horse who was in top form before Ascot and he never got close there. Prior to that his run at York when just pipped by SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD is decent form. The ground should suit and he now has an extra five pounds in hand with OPINION and that doesn't take into account his riders claim. Could run a huge race at a big price.
TWEETIE PIE 1505 BEVERLEY – (WON – 50-1) wasn't that impressive on debut but I follow Declan Carroll alot and he can get a horse flying on these courses in Yorkshire and this one with a run under its belt should improve, again a massive price in my opinion.
If you're having a flutter today, good luck and remember to bet within your means. Enjoy the sun and the racing.

Sandown, Chester and Beverley

Love this photo of Frankel taken by Emma. Loads more of her excellent work here. Glad to hear that connections have not bayed to public pressure and have opted for the Champion Stakes as his swansong.
Onwards to todays events. Here are my selections for today.
DIAMOND BLUE 1545 BEVERLEY (nap) – (unplaced) her last course and distance win was impressive and the form has held up well with the second horse being placed and the third winning. Hope the ground isnt too tacky though!
BORDERLESCOTT 1615 BEVERLEY (nb) – (WON – 8-1) what can't be said about this old boy! tough as old boots and has been a real stable star. Didn't manage to get in to the Nunthorpe last week so goes here instead. Must have a great each way chance and is a real battler.
HASOPOP 1450 SANDOWN (treble) – (unplaced) has really impressed me with his gutsy wins. This is another step up but I think he has the quality. 7f should suit with his battling qualities.
I am also having a wager on the following :
MOHEDIAN LADY 1430 CHESTER -(unplaced) been running in better quality races than this. Prescott is a handicap genius over distances like this.
CATFISH 1415 SANDOWN – (unplaced) again another who has been running in better races and is taken to finally get his nose up on the line.
VIVA RONALDO 1505 CHESTER – (unplaced) is a course specialist and that is needed at Chester. Won here off same mark in May. Great each way chance!
EXCEL BOLT 1620 CHESTER – (unplaced) has a decent draw and I've followed him all year. Has bags of ability, needs things to drop right though!
CAPTIVATOR 1525 SANDOWN – (unplaced) ran well in the Spring winning for Fallon at Kempton and then unlucky at Newmarket too. Ignore last run – should be back to best.
LATE TELEGRAPH 1600 SANDOWN – (unplaced) is down in trip and a massive 12lbs lower than his last run. With that in mind he is taken as a positive each way chance.
BEACON TARN 1540 CHESTER – (unplaced) a risky bet. Well bred and comes from a yard that knows how to get winners here. Interestingly comes here for a debut rather than a maiden.
If you're having a bet – good luck and bet within your means!
Enjoy the day – hopefully a few winners here!

Tuesday Tips

Right, my blog returns after a few days off. Had an ace time over the weekend with the lads. Golfing at the excellent Matfen Hall Golf Club and then a spot of mountain biking around Kielder water on the Sunday.
I’ve only just seen the Black Caviar run and the near fatal error of her jockey, huge relief on his part. The horse that impressed me the most throughout the week (other than Frankel) was NEWFANGLED. One for the notebook there.
So, back to the blog, and another fantastic photo courtesy of Emma. Here are my best three for Tuesday.
KHIONE 2035 NEWBURY – (nap) (Won – 15-8) won well first time out at Nottingham on soft ground and the form got franked big time with impressive victory of CHIGUN last week who was second to the tip at Nottingham.
DOTTY DARROCH BEVERLEY 1700 – (nb) (3rd – 11-2) drops down to this grade and with conditions to suit should be dominant and the winner.
ROYAL DEFENCE 1615 BRIGHTON – (treble) (unplaced) is handicapped to go close after a good second last time here. I’m hopeful that the run last time will have woken him up abit more to take this.
Stats as of 26/6/12

WINS 59/335 = 17.6%
NAPS 22/89 = 24.7%
PLACED 81/335 = 24.1%
WIN OR PLACED 140/335 = 41.7%

The Derby

Here is the day, the greatest flat race of them all – The Derby! With only nine runners today though it won’t be the usual spectacle it is in my opinion. My selection is further down the page. Yesterday proved to be relatively successful with CLINICAL (7-1) winning. Lets hope a few more come in today.
UKRANIAN 1530 MUSSELBURGH – (nap) (unplaced) Mark Johnston has a great record in this and saddles 5. My selection is an outsider yet I think it has a great chance. Winning well over 1m 4f first time out and then a steady gallop last time didn’t suit. I’m sure the instructions today will be to dictate the pace and I’m hoping then they won’t get to him.
PASTORAL PLAYER 1435 HAYDOCK – (nb) (WON – 3-1) is a smart handicapper and is ready to claim one like this. Is generally better in larger fields, but the firmer ground will help today. Fancy him to come late with plenty in hand and pip Red Jazz.
FIERY LAD 1650 EPSOM – (treble) (WON – 10-1) has form here and on the ground and also has won at this class. Been running poorly lately, but has the master of Epsom Fallon on board to steer him home.
I’m also having a wager on these horses too today :
DAZINSKI 1410 HAYDOCK (2nd – 10-1)
SOHRAAB 1515 EPSOM (unplaced)
THOUGHT WORTHY 1605 EPSOM (unplaced)
SET TO MUSIC 1510 HAYDOCK (2nd – 2-1)
Stats as of 2/6//12
WINS 45/254 = 17.7%
NAPS 15/70 = 21.4%
PLACED 62/254 = 24.4%
WIN OR PLACED 107/254 = 42.1%
Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!

Was disappointed with GHOSTWING on Tuesday. However, good old EFISTORM ran other cracker in defeat. Looking forward to the Oaks and Derby this weekend but not studied any of the races yet. Only a short blog tonight and won’t have time for on tomorrow as working until late!
Here’s my three for tomorrow
NASEEM ALYASMEEM 2045 FOLKESTONE – (nap) (WON 9-4) ran a cracking race las week at Leicester and must go close on that form!
ASTROPHYSICAL JET 1905 BEVERLEY – (nb) (unplaced) was formerly a group class horse and I can’t believe how poorly he has ran lately. This is an ideal race for him to bounce back, show his class and grow in confidence
RED INCA 2105 BEVERLEY – (treble) (unplaced) ran well for this yard over the hurdles this season and looks the type to be a good dual purpose horse.
Stats as of 30/5/12
WINS 40/231 = 17.3%
NAPS 15/67 = 22.3%
PLACED 58/231 = 25.1%
WIN OR PLACED 98/231 = 42.4%
Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!

Tuesday’s Tips

One winner on the blog on Monday courtesy of the old timer ZOMERLUST (5-2). The disappointment of the day was COOL BARANACA proving that some horses can’t do both codes!
The last day before the Dante meeting is a cracker, here are my tips.
PANTXOA 1420 HEREFORD – (nap) (non runner = 5 points) ran some very creditable races over hurdles and didn’t perform in the mud last time. With good ground he should be one to take advantage in this novice chase. (5 point win)

ALLERTON 1520 HEREFORD – (nb) (2nd 5-2) any reproduction of his second at Chepstow should be more than enough to take this. Conceding weight all round, but should win. (3 point win)

INGLEBY STAR 1500 BEVERLEY – (treble) (unplaced) runs well here and has figures of 32351 on his last five starts. Is a decent price and a decent each way bet. (2 points each way)

STAKE = 12 points

RETURNS = 5 points

BANK = – 32.9 points

Stats as of 15/5/12

WINS 29/154 = 18.8%
NAPS 11/52 = 21.1%
PLACED 33/154 = 21.4%
WIN OR PLACED 62/154 = 40.2%

Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!
