Saturday selections

What a feast of racing there is on offer today. With some fantastic horses competing in Group races and tough handicaps, and all this with York's Ebor meeting on the horizon! We're certainly in for a treat or two over the upcoming week. Enjoy the racing today and good luck if you are having a bet, hopefully I can find a few winners and the Saturday nap again!

LASTCHANCELUCAS 1545 CHESTER (nap) – (2nd – 4-1) really caught the eye last time out when finishing a very close sixth at Pontefract, despite running wide and being hampered in running. That run was much more like what he is capable of and will have more chance if the forecast rain falls too. Really confident about this ones chances today.

SECRETINTHEPARK 1455 NEWMARKET (nb) – (2nd – 13-2) won well here earlier in the season and looked a decent animal. Looked back to that level when third here last time. Today he is much better off in the weights than he was with the two infront of him last time, and that could prove pivotal.

MAGLIETTA FINA 1420 NEWMARKET (treble) – (unplaced) has some decent form in Italy, particularly on good ground. Has taken time to adapt to British racing judged on the last two runs. The rain that has fallen will help as I think last time the ground was a little quick. Has been kept on the same mark as the last run amd I think has a big chance judged on that today.

BLANC DE CHINE 1615 DONCASTER – (unplaced) has a very good strike rate and the application of a hood today should help the concentration further. Ultra consistent at Class 3 and 4 and has won on good and good to firm ground, has a good chance here today.

CORNISH PATH 1350 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) followed up her earlier Kempton success with a very encouraging second last time here. Has a chance to go one better today.

CHOOSEDAY 1450 RIPON – (4th – 6-1) has been running really well of late and won on this day at Chester last year! He is a dual 6f winner and ran very well at Glorious Goodwood last time in a hot race. Has a great chance from stall 1.

BLAINE 1530 RIPON – (unplaced) I need my head looking at with this one! However, I am still convinced this horse is much better than he's been showing! He won the Gimcrack last year and despite showing absolutely zip so far this year, he may be falling to a mark that befits his ability. Willing to give him one more go. BACCARAT was just getting going when he was badly hampered by the terrible fall involving Amy Ryan last time, and could run a big race. As could SECRET WITNESS, whose chances I really like, despite his draw.

My final two selections come at Newbury.

I'M YOUR MAN 1440 NEWBURY – (unplaced) suffered a head defeat last time to Lost in the Moment when conceding weight to that rival. They are both off level weights today and that could prove the telling fact as I think my selection will out battle his old foe in the closing stages

SOFT FALLING RAIN 1515 NEWBURY – (2nd – 9-4) this horse really is class, and has looked every bit a superstar this year. The Dubai form isn't that hot but I reckon he has way more class than the rivals today and should win this easy enough.

Glorious Goodwood Saturday

Not much look yesterday! Only MONTIRIDGE winning and a place for CAPE PERON. On to an even more difficult Saturday fixture with some cracking handicaps. I really love this big fields and trying to solve the problem, hopefully have picked a few today. Good luck if you're having a bet.

TROJAN ROCKET 1715 NEWMARKET (nap) – this boy needs to step up again but judging on his last run behind Baby Strange at Newcastle he can do. He was unlucky that day as didn't get the gap when needed. Mlikael Barzalona has a cracking record on him and I think he has a great chance today.

VALBCHEK 1720 DONCASTER (nb) – he was very smart last term at times and has some solid form to bring to the table. He is back from a long break but they have been waiting for the ground to be easier. Massive chance today.

BABY STRANGE 1405 GOODWOOD (treble) – has been raised 6lbs for his success at Newcastle. However, he is one to follow when in form and he has a cracking record in this, taking it in 2008 and he flew home at the finish last year, really good each way chance.

BLAINE 1550 GOODWOOD – is thrown in to his first handicap and is a huge price. He won the Gimcrack at York in a stella start to his career, he has since been disappointing, but class is class and he could be better than these, and interestingly is entered in another Group 1 later on. Great each way value too. I've fought with my heartstrings and decided to leave WHOZTHECAT alone in this. He's ran incredibly well this year but it's maye asking too much for him towin this from the front under a penalty. I kind of hope I'm wrong though!

JUST THE JUDGE 1515 GOODWOOD – she ran really well I thought from a difficult stall at the Royal meeting and she should relish this step up in trip. I think she will reverse the form with Sky Lantern today, whom I'm not sure will stay.

ELIDOR 1440 GOODWOOD – has been raised 5lbs since his last victory and the form of that race has been franked by CAP O'RUSHES and Bold Sniper since, great chance to take this too.

LANCELOT DU LAC 1420 NEWMARKET – this is an easier race than he's been running well in and he looked a smart proposition when winning first time out. The yard is bang in form and he should win this.

NO POPPY 1615 THIRSK – quickly becoming a cliff horse, but she has been well tried this year and I firmly believe she's a decent horse. She's even better with a bit of give and I'm hoping the thunderstorms and showers have got into the ground for her!

Royal Ascot Day 2

Photo : Mark Cranham

What a first day of the meeting that was. I got ANIMAL KINGDOM way wrong, but it just affirmed the believe about transferring dirt form to grass – not many can do it. TORONADO ran a cracker for me and despite his defeat I was pleased DAWN APPROACH won to end his Epsom nightmare. I also thought MYSTERIOUS MAN ran a cracker and he is one to watch out for next time. Hero of the day has to be JONNY MURTAGH who proved again what a brilliant jockey he is in sprint races. On to Wednesday, and hopefully a winner!

JERSEY STAKES

GALE FORCE TEN has the Irish Guineas form in his favour here and ran a decent race in the Norfolk last year, however I don't fancy him here. GARSWOOD was a horse hyped up for the 2000 Guineas and he got nowhere near and again I think this level is too much for him. BLAINE is interesting, he won the Gimcrack last year but has then disappointed in the Middle Park and in France. On better ground though he could run a big race at 50-1 when I type this. My money is on MUTIN, he is four from four, including on a good surface. He has won at listed level, looked like he could run at this level well and the drop back shouldn't hinder him.

Selections – MUTIN (unplaced) & BLAINE e/w (unplaced)

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES

This race revolves around three horses for me. DUNTLE has some excellent form and has shown it over course and distance and she could be very smart. CHIGUN was impressive when winning the Abu Dabi stakes at the Curragh. However, my preference is for DANK who is a highly progressive and talented filly. She defeated CHIGUN on her last run and was giving her 3lbs. Today they are off level weights and the ground will suit too. One of my best bets of the meeting.

Selections – DANK (nap) (3rd – 7-2)

PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES

Alot has been said about CAMELOT and that his Classic crop weren't the best and that he defeated nothing. For me he stills needs credit on what he did achieve, and almost achieved. On reflection now was ENCKE drugged up by Zarooni? Anyway, he has a great chance and after a run I think he will reverse placings with AL KAZEEM. This horse has got better and better and his trainer rates him highly and rightly so, but I just think he is a level below top class. My money is on THE FUGUE in this race, if she is fully tuned up with conditions to suit, last year's Nassau winner could swoop late and take this.

Selection – THE FUGUE (nb) (3rd – 11-2)

ROYAL HUNT CUP

If I pick the winner of this, or if anyone does, you know you're drawing a tidy sum. Andrew Balding has been bigging up STIRRING BALLAD leading up to this, she has done well but I don't think she'll take this. Behind her at Kempton when LILY'S ANGEL won was BURKE'S ROCK, she could also run a big race from a high draw. GLOBAL VILLAGE will run his race again from the other side and is consistent here and could nab a place. I can't have PRINCE OF JOHANNE on current form, despite an improvement last time, but he loves these big fields. ES QUE LOVE is a horse who I firmly believe will take a big handicap like this over a mile. He did so first time out at Kempton this year and is now 3lbs lower than that success. He has a high draw and ran well in defeat on Saturday at Musselburgh with the same jockey on board, interestingly, he's on the same mark as that today!

Selection – ES QUE LOVE e/w (unplaced)

QUEEN MARY STAKES

BELDALE MEMORY will be favourite or near to it on the back of her success in the Marygate Stakes at York, however, she could be softer ground dependant and that is worth taking her on for. Hannon's trio will be popular and they haven't struck yet. My preference here is for QUATOUR, she was incredibly impressive when bounding away to take the Lily Agnes Stakes at Chester. In my opinion the ground beat her at York. The yard took this last year with CEILING KITTY and this horse has took the same route and I just think the ground in a fast run race with play into her strengths and 25-1 as I write this is huge!

Selection – QUATOUR (treble) (unplaced)

SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP

NARGYS is an interesting runner, only an abysmal run in the Nell Gwyn stopped her running in the Guineas when touted up as a class horse by Keiren Fallon, she's not worth giving up on, but this is too much for her. WOODLAND ARIA was impressive first time out and then the trip seemed too much after that run. Returned to 7f last time she won well, and I think that is her trip, not this! My selection for the race is ANNIE'S FORTUNE, she ran well behind WATERWAY RUN in the Oh So Sharp stakes and is a full 6lbs less in the ratings today, that is a very appealing mark for me for a horse that could well be a shade better than this level.

Selection – ANNIE'S FORTUNE e/w (unplaced)

Whatever happens on Day 2, lets hope it is as good as Day 1. Sit back and enjoy, bet within your means and good luck.
