Good morning from a wet Sheffield! To be honest I'm thankful for a bit of rain the hayfever has been killing me over recent weeks so any respite is a plus. I had a cracking time at Haydock last Saturday for their evening meeting. Only had one winner and a couple of seconds, the winner Steve Prescott goes again today at Chester – he looks a decent prospect. Anyway on to todays selections and the highlight is the Pitmans Derby today, its a bloody tough race to pick the winner – good luck with it! I'm opting for GLENARD to take the race. He looked progressive last year and has form on this type of ground, will get the trip and has a good each way chance.
CHANCERY 1455 NEWMARKET – (NAP) (3rd – 16-1 = £10.00) this horse has been knocking on the door of late but has also run a few disappointing races when fancied. There are a few ground question marks with some of these today and I'm chancing him to run back to form on ground that should suit. He has to reverse form with BATTALION from that race at Ripon which also had SUEGIOO back in third.
MIDNITE ANGEL 1745 NEWMARKET – (NB) (WON – 9-2 = £14.06) I thought this girl would run better at Royal Ascot. She showed great speed as a juvenile and hasnt met the requirements of the lofty targets she has has. This is a big drop in class and I think she has a cracking chance today.
ROYAL RASCAL 1515 NEWCASTLE – (TREBLE) (2nd -14-1 = £8.75) this filly is another one who has some decent form in the bag. She came just short against BONDESIRE at Chester, who has since run well. Off a mark 7lbs lower than when defeating ODOOJ at York. She has been running well of late, except last time out, but I'm willing to put a line through that. The quicker ground shouldnt be a hinderance, she finished 3rd to RODSHU QUEEN on good to firm. 20-1 is a bonkers price for me as I write this.
GOLDREAM 1610 WINDSOR – (NR) won well for the blog at Newmarket on 1000 Guineas day and then ran creditably on easier ground the next time. This faster surface will bring out the best in him and I'm hopeful of a winning race. Should get a good toe from a few front runners and then with Jimmy Fortune powering him through it could be set up nice for him.
I also like the chances of BODY AND SOUL 1440 NEWCASTLE and I'm intrigued to see how BONNIE GREY 1420 NEWMARKET runs on better ground.
My Dad's selections are :
MUTHMIR 1405 NEWCASTLE (2nd – 9-4 = £1.40)
SAAYERR 1440 NEWCASTLE (unplaced – = -£5.00)
GABRIELS LAD 1530 NEWMARKET (unplaced – =-£5.00)
ANGEL GABRIEL 1550 NEWCASTLE (WON 4-1 = £12.50)
Father 8-13 Son
I thought I would do a little mid week blog for a few I fancy at Haydock and Sandown. The Sandown meeting is always a good one with the annual running of the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. The bloody weather is playing havoc with the horses and the going at the moment. Lets hope the next week is dry ready for the Derby.
BONNIE GREY 1840 SANDOWN (NAP) – this is a cracking race! My selection was very impressive at Warwick in testing conditions. She hardly even broke sweat and the jockey never had to move a muscle, she could be very smart and this race will certainly be an indicator of that. Cock of the North ran very well in the Brocklesby and a repeat of that would see him go close. Via Via caught the eye when going away at Ripon and the form of ROUDEE was franked by MIDTERM BREAK on Saturday. An intriguing race!
BROWN PANTHER 1915 SANDOWN (NB) – I love this horse, he has got better and better over the last few years and he could be a high class Cup horse to follow. I think he will have too much for these today and his defeat of HILLSTAR at Chester was a good one. This trip will suit him and I think he’ll take this quite easily. I’m intrigued to see how MENORAH gets on!!!!
ANDERIEGO 1550 HAYDOCK (TREBLE) – this horse hasn’t won for a while now but he is on a very appealing mark. He has some form on soft ground and I just think there were signs of some sort of a revival the first run out this season and this softer ground may eek something out of him. If he puts his best foot forward this is a winning mark for him for sure!
RACE TO GLORY 1420 HAYDOCK – has run reasonably well in a couple a maiden races over 1m2f and this step up in trip should help and I think the ground will suit him more too. This trip takes some getting here especially on soft ground and I’m hopeful of a solid run.
