Charlie Hall Chase and Ascot

Today really sees the National Hunt season kick off in earnest with the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby plus a decent supporting card at Ascot. Most trainers will be happy with the rain that arrived over the past few days although I'm not sure it will have done my old favourite Holywell any favours in the big race. Lots of old favourites are running today and as always at this time of the season most of them need a run in them.
As before I'll have a head to head battle with my dad over the NH season, him being a jumping fan like me.

Sit back and enjoy the action today.

SAM WINNER 1505 WETHERBY (nap)
This horse goes really well fresh and will love the ground. He ran some cracking races last year; winning the Murphy Chase at Cheltenham carrying 11st 10lbs on soft ground. He then beat MEDERMIT and MA FILLEULE at Aintree off a mark of OR156. He proved (to me at least!) that he was a top class staying chaser in the Lexus when he just didnt quite get the trip that day. I'm hoping Sean Bowen will bounce him out from the front here at Wetherby, he may need a sterner test than this three miles. Eight year olds have a decent record in this and I'm hoping of a big run. HOLYWELL knows it's the Autumn and would prefer better ground, I think DYNASTE is the danger.

SIGN OF VICTORY 1450 ASCOT (nb)
Will love this ground and won this easily last year. He is carrying a stone more in weight but he's a high class hurdler in this ground. I'm expecting another dominant run and 5-1 is huge for me!

BABY MIX 1415 ASCOT (treble)
This guy has been knocking recently and again the ground is key. My only doubt is the trip but he did start his novice chasing career over this distance and won a few. He ran well last time and I thought the jockey should have gotten him nearer but saying that he probably needed the run. Today is his day.

ROCK ON RUBY 1400 WETHERBY
The old favourite returns! The question mark against him today is his stamina. I don't think this will be an issue; he has been caught for pace recently in the hot races he used to win and non of these plodders will have that change of gear. Class is class and I think he'll stay and win this well. Staying hurdles will be his arena this year if he does.

The start of the National Hunt season- Hurrah!!!!

We finished the fault blog off last week with the final standings as follows :

Father 14 -16 Son

Profit –

Son £176.05

Father £130.64

Not a bad total from both of us I’m sure you will agree! We reset the scores on the doors now for the jumps season! Both my dad and I prefer the jumps so hopefully we will continue the recent run and get a few winners on the blog. I had a few near misses last week with three of my four all placed but my Dad produced another solid winner for the third week on the trot with DUNGANNON at Doncaster (13-2).

Here are today’s selections

TAQUIN DE SEUIL 1515 WETHERBY (NAP) – (2nd 100-30 = £2.08) got better as the season progressed last year including a solid performance when winning the JLT Novices Chase at Cheltenham. This step up in trip should suit and we will see if he can mix it with the big boys today. He had DOUBLE ROSS and WONDERFUL CHARM behind the festival and it looked like he needed the outing when the latter got his revenge at Newton Abbott last time. That run though could prove to be the deciding factor today against SILVINIACO CONTI. Any horse that can win at Cheltenham and Haydock has the stamina to win up the gruelling Wetherby finish. Looking forward to seeing him hopefully run well today!

GEVREY CHAMBERTIN 1535 ASCOT (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) never really took to fences last year and flattered to deceive a lot. I’m willing to give him another go as he could be potentially very good. He has a very appealing chase mark in light of his hurdles exploits and he could use that to his advantage today. Let hope he fulfils some of the potential he has.

CLARET CLOAK 1420 ASCOT (TREBLE) – (2nd – 13-2 = £4.06) ground is the key to this horse and hopefully very little rain will have fallen by the off. He has 3 wins on good ground around this sort of distance but has yet to win a this level, he has the class for it though! He was beaten a nose by MANYRIVERSTOCROSS last November when giving him 5lbs, today he is albs better off and that could be a big factor. NEXT SENSATION ran very well last year but I feel a run is needed to get back to that level.

ON HIS OWN 1430 DOWN ROYAL – (unplaced = -£5.00) so near won me a huge chunk of money in last year’s Gold Cup. He ran a stormer that day and proved what a damn fine horse he is. He was a National favourite too a few times! I think that line of form is the best here to day and for me you an put a line through his last defeat to stablemate BOSTON BOB as he returned lame, there is the reason and excuse! I think on this yielding ground he will stay on up the finish and defeat his stablemate, with Ruby cursing his selection of rides! I hope anyway!

My Dad’s selection :

BOSTON BOB 1430 DOWN ROYAL (3rd 9-4 = £1.40)

DOUBLE ROSS 1515 WETHERBY (3rd 11-1 = £6.87)

ROALCO DE FARGES 1535 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

LAZER BLAZER 1500 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

Total Week One

Father – £1.73

Son -£3.86

Charlie Hall Chase

Today sees the return of the jumping season. Am I looking forward to it, just a bit! My all time favourite horse, Tidal Bay, goes again aswell. The picture above is of him winning the Lexus Chase last year under an awesome ride from Ruby Walsh. There are some cracking races today and some old favourites and some potential new stars in the offering. This is what racing is all about!
If you're having a bet, good luck, and whatever happens lets hope all these favourites of ours get round in one piece. The Charlie Hall Chase is always the grand curtain raiser, today I'm not having a bet in the race as I think the up and coming horses have alot to find with Long Run, especially on softer ground.

CHRIS PEA GREEN 1445 ASCOT (NAP) – (2nd – 8-1) this horse is a potential huge improver this year and he ran very well behind Our Conor in the Triumph at Chletenham, despite not having a smooth run. He is a horse I will follow closely and with the conditions being a bit softer I think it will play to his strengths even more. COURT MINSTREL is a class horse and I backed him both times when winning las year, he is one to follow but I think the ground will be against him today, he needs genuine good ground in my opinion and I don't think he'll get it today.

ROLLING ACES 1505 DOWN ROYAL (NB) (WON – 9-4) Paul Nichols has an awesoem record in this race and I think my selection will win again for him. He ran some excellent races last year and his form with OPENING BATSMAN is strong despite him being pipped by his rival at Kempton. He has been targetted for this race and should deliver

TIDAL BAY 1500 WETHERBY (TREBLE) – (WON – 11-4) what a horse this guy is, and a real character too. Paul Nicholls has really got the best out of him and he won this race last year off the same mark. He went on to have an incredile season over the timber and compounded my fondness of him. At the weights he would have had a difficult time against AT FISHERS CROSS, however, now that foe is a non runner he has every chance of repeating his success. Win or lose I don't care, he's owes me nothing.

OPENING BATSMAN 1520 ASCOT – (PU) another horse that owes me nothing after winning at Kempton last year when I napped him on this blog. That was a smooth performance and there was alot to like. He is another horse with a big future and I think you can forget his run at Aintree towards the end of last year. He was tired, Aintree is a specialist course and BATTLE GROUP made it a ferocious pace which meant my boy had to be niggled along and he son faded. Today should be more smooth and pedestrian and his is a massive price considering ROLLING ACES is 2-1 fav for the Powers Irish Whiskey Chase.

FAIRY RAITH 1410 ASCOT – (unplaced) won here and at Haydock towards the end of last season and has very strong form in the book, including a defeat of CONQUISTO who franked the form last week under AP. Has lots of things in his favour and should run a big race.

SWIFTLY DONE 1420 NEWMARKET – (4th – 20-1) my old mate Declan Carroll sends a few to headquarters and he has a decent record there. My selection is running a pound below his last winning mark and cries out for soft/heavy ground. He has that today and could run a big race.

TULLIUS 1530 NEWMARKET (3rd – 7-2) I was really disappointed with his run when I napped him on here the other week, he obviously needed it. Let's hope today he shows his true colours, SOVEREIGN DEBT helped the form of his last success when running well in defeat the other week at Doncaster. Has to run better today!

PRINCE DE BEAUCHENE 1430 DOWN ROYAL – (3rd – 7-1) this guy was favourite for the National before injuring himself and I cannot believe he is 12-1 for this race, yes there are a few others that are well treated, but he has class and 3 miles in yielding ground is right up his street.

FINESSE 1600 NEWMARKET (unplaced) I watched this filly win well at Warwick earlier in the year, she has good form on quicker ground but also has won on soft. She was thrown in the deep end last time out in a Listed contest and drops back to Class 4 this time. She may be forgotten, but I haven't!
