Coral Welsh National

The blog returns post Christmas and The Bandit is still in a spin with a the festivities and travelling. I'm currently in Burnley visiting my parents and sat here looking out on a picture devoid of any snow. The comparison to Bandit Towers in Sheffield couldn't be more different with a foretold 15cm lying there! Thank god I'm here! There is some cracking racing on offer today and hopefully I'll have a change of luck as I've been bloody dire recently!

The twitter gamble fellas return after their Christmas exploits and have opted for the following :
@TonytheTyke Bright New Dawn 1320 Leopardstown
@DazGilbert1 Shoegazer 1510 Chepstow
@Fernando_RFC2 Chatez 1525 Kempton
@LiamKenniford Balder Success 1340 Kempton

Here are my best four as always :

FAGO 1510 KEMPTON (nap) (PU = -£5.00)

This guy was being touted as a potential Arkle candidate last season before a few very novicey jumps. He has always been thought highly of and knowing his connections they have been giving him lots of schooling. The testing ground should really suit him today and I'm expecting a big run.

EDMUND KEAN 1435 CHEPSTOW (nb) (unplaced = -£5.00)

This horse ran well in a few small field chases last year before finding the Scottish National too much after a blunder. Interestingly moves to the Bowen yard who know how to win this! He loves testing ground and if his jumping has improved he could run a big race. I'm hopeful of at least a place. I've also had a little on EMPEROR'S CHOICE, who has run well the last twice and will relish the ground. GAS LINE BOY off a big weight may run well too and this race reminds me of my old mate TIDAL BAY who ran so well in it the other year! A cracking renewal!

HINTERLAND 1340 KEMPTON (treble) (PU – =-£5.00)

Mercurial talent and prone to breaking blood vessels but is a class horse and his third last time at Sandown was really good and that should be enough to give BALDER SUCCESS something to think about. With a solid round of jumping and his body being kept in otrder he has to have a great chance.

GRANDOUET 1310 KEMPTON (unplaced = -£5.00)

Another smart horse with some smart form in his locker! This really is a cracking race and the likes of GOD'S OWN and VIBRATO VALTAT are exciting times. I dont think it will be soft enough for MELODIC RENDEZVOUS to return to the winner's area though. My tip was second in this last year and wasnt disgraced in the Arkle and he could be a second season jumper to follow, he's certainly smart enough!

My Dad's selections are :

BYGONES SOVEREIGN 1325 CHEPSTOW (unplaced =-£5.00)
KAREZAK 1355 CHEPSTOW (2nd – 11-4 = £1.71)
EMPEROR'S CHOICE 1435 CHEPSTOW (WON 9-1 = £28.12)
SILVER COMMANDER 1415 KEMPTON (unplaced = -£5.00)

The Flat Finale

myWPEdit Image

The blog returns after a couple of weeks off due to my busy schedule! My dad has put in a real late burst over the past couple of weeks and he tipped up both INTEGRAL (7-2) and INTRANSIGENT (16-1) – his second big priced winner in a row. Its narrowed the weekly competition to 14-15 as we head into this final week.Profit stands at £170.12 to me compared to £125.06 to him. Another big winner or two will see him possibly win but with the returns of the jumps I’m confident of holding on today! We will start the competent form scratch again next week for the jumps season. We’re both NH lovers so hopefully the blog will produce some good winners for everyone over the winter months! The flat season is brought to a close today with the Racing Post Trophy being the highlight, it’s been another cracker with some real standout performances. My horse of the summer has to be TAGROODHA though, awesome filly!

Enjoy the racing today and hopefully we’ll give you winner or two again on the blog!

CELESTIAL PATH 1550 DONCASTER (NAP) (3rd – 6-1 = £3.75) I have backed this fella on both his runs this year and was wondering where Sir Mark would send him next. It’s unusual to see the Prescott yard send out a horse in a race like this, but hen they do you have to sit up and take notice. Think of CONFIDENTIAL LADY, HOORAY, ALBORADA. This guy has looked a smart proposition and is well bred, running green on both starts but still having the class to see it out in the closing stages.The ground is a bit unknown but his breeding (FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND/HAWKWING) indicates it shouldn’t be a problem. I really excited about this horse, particularly next season as a 3 year old. A big race run I reckon today!

ELUSIVITY 1515 DONCASTER (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) I’ve settled for this guy over another two who have recent form but I think their mark will catch them out; those being DUNGANNON and KICKBOXER. I’ve opted for this selection as the ground being truly soft brings his past form more into play and he is now running off a very appealing mark, albs lower than this time last year. He has a high draw, a feather weight and the ground well in his favour. 20-1 as I write this could be a silly price, a great each way chance in my opinion.

ROLLING ACES 1500 AINTREE (TREBLE) – (3rd 8-1 = £5.00) The Nicholls’ string have generally needed a run, but this fella is a class horse and I’m expecting big things from him this season. His second to BOSTON BOB over course and distance join April was a cracking run and with the ground being decent it will allow him to show his true colours. He does have a high mark but I think he will go on to better things this year after this, and will a solid round of jumping he must have a great chance.

THE PIRATES QUEEN 1535 CHEPSTOW – (3rd 7-2 = £2.18) this mare is waiting for her first hurdles win. She has ran well in a few races last year, particularly with a bit of cut in the ground. She was put in her place by As I Am when going off favourite at Cheltenham last time out but the ground wasn’t soft enough that day. Today she has a nice weight allowance and the excellent O’Regan on board. I think she will be really competitive.

My Dad’s selections are :

GLORIOUS PROTECTOR 1420 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)

EMERAHLDZ 1440 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)

UXIZANDRE 1500 AINTREE (unplaced = -£5.00)

DUNGANNON 1515 DONCASTER (WON 13-2 = £20.58)

Saturday at Kempton

A cracking day of racing ahead! I write the blog slightly hungover after a celebratory curry and few beers last night. The celebration – half term! Its going to be a cracker too as we're taking our girls to EuroDisney tomorrow and they don't know yet! I'm hoping a few of the selections come in to line the wallet ready for the trip! This time last year I napped OPENING BATSMAN to win the big race at Kempton and I think I've found the winner today! Hopefully my dad and I can keep the profit going! I need to do much better than last week!

BAILE ANRAI 1550 KEMPTON (nap) – really caught my eye when running a cracker behind The Rainbow Hunter last time on heavy at Doncaster. Has always had bits of decent form and I think the slightly better ground will help too. I think he's got a cracking chance today.

GREY GOLD 1505 CHEPSTOW (nb) – was really impressive how he stuck on and won at Sandown last time. Lots to like about that, he jumps soundly and will relish the conditions again.

SMOKING ACES 1455 NEWCASTLE (treble) – is a thorough stayer and will need to be today. Plugged on well in behind Emperor's Choice last time and Maurice Linnehan's claim will aid further in this marathon trip!

SWNYMOR 1430 CHEPSTOW – I've always liked this horse and he ran much better last time after a decent spin on the flat the time before. If he reproduces his best form he will win this. This race is the best chance he's had of getting his nose infront for a while.

Here are my Dad's selections :

GOOD TO KNOW 1355 CHEPSTOW
SMOKING ACES 1455 NEWCASTLE
TULLYESKER HILL 1540 CHEPSTOW
BAILE ANRAI 1550 KEMPTON

The Welsh National

This photo was one of my favourite racing moments, when the amazing Tidal Bay was given a peach of a ride by Ruby Walsh in last year's Lexus Chase. He's my favourite horse in racing and is a legend before today. Could he do the impossible today? Yesterday was a cracking day on the blog for me and my old man with MICKIE (5-2), ELY BROWN (13-8) and PEPITE ROSE, the nap, going in at 4-1. My old man still made more profit than me though with IPSOS DU BERLAIS getting placed in the big chase at Leopardstown.
He's 2-0 up now and way in front of me on profit, time to claw some back today! Each selection is a £2.50 each way.

TIDAL BAY 1435 CHEPSTOW (nap) – (3rd – 10-1 = £6.25) everyone I listen to is doubting this old boy, not me! He is the class horse in the race, as judged on the weights and so many horses running from out the handicap. He could have gone anywhere over the Xmas period but they have opted for this, he will relish the ground, trust me. He won the BET365 Gold Cup the other year on soft ground, but it was a right slog and he cruised through it. That is the same trip as this and he carried 11-12 that day too. This track will suit him and he will be able to come from off the pace late as other horses are stopping. Remember he was second to Bob's Worth in the Hennessey last year, giving him 6lbs. He is great in these handicaps! He will need to use all his class to win this, but he is a legend and this will write him into the history books! I believe! Do you?

PATEESE 1450 NEWBURY (nb) – (2nd – 9-2 = £2.81) ran back to form last time behind Mickie at track. He has been raised 5lbs for that, but that form is strong, especially after Mickie outstaying them all yesterday again. He should run another cracker!

FRONTIER SPIRIT 1510 CHEPSTOW (treble) – (unplaced = -£5.00) has been dropped to mark just 2lbs higher than when winning at Newbury on heavy ground over 2m6f. He will relish the ground and his first two runs need a line through as for me he was pitched too high. This race is more his level and he is on an appealing mark as mentioned. The ground will really come into play and with MAIL DE BIEVRE making all it should play into his strengths as this is over slightly shorter. Chance!

SOLAR IMPULSE 1400 CHEPSTOW – (unplaced = -£5.00) has been snapped upby top connections that you have to take note of. He could be anything, but for me he has won on heavy ground in France. When it is heavy over there it is bottomless and that will surely play into his hamds today with the forecast going at Chepstow. He has good breeding and is out of the same sire as GRANDIOSO another one of these connections horses. Has a big chance to open his account

Those are my four for my blog purposes, I also fancy GLEN COUNTES 1245 Newbury,RESTLESS HARRY 1315 Newbury and MOORLANDS MIST 1330 Chepstow.

Here are my old man's four for today :

BRACKLOON HIGH 1330 CHEPSTOW (unplaced = -£5.00)
RENARD 1510 CHEPSTOW (WON – 7-1 = £21.88)
VINTAGE STAR 1435 CHEPSTOW (unplaced = -£5.00)
HOWARDS LEGACY 1315 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)

Running totals – FATHER 2 SON 0

Father = £64.68 profit
Son = £20.39 profit

Father = £6.88
Son = – £0.96.

Cesarewitch Day

Another fantastic day of racing today. I'm more than excited now though as we have the first major jumps card of the season, yay! Whilst I enjoy the flat, jumps really is my thing! Can't wait! Enjoy the spectacle today and good luck if you're having a wager.

TULIUS 1725 NEWMARKET (nap) – (unplaced) this horse was super smart last year and just got better with every race. He will live the ground and trip today and is good fresh. A big run expected and my best bet of the day.

VALBCHEK 1530 YORK (nb) – (unplaced) has only had a handful of races and in my opinion is a smart horse. Ignore his last run as the 5f and quicker ground didn't suit. This fella defeated Swiss Spirit last year and was 2l behind Tropics at Newmarket in August. It's his handicap debut and his mark could be lenient judged on that form.

WAR COMMAND 1510 (treble) – (WON 10-11) the trip, the ground, the race, everything is in his favour today and I can't see him being beat. Reckon he'll go off odds on

GREAT WHITE EAGLE 1435 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) looks to have bags of potential and could be a real genuine classic horse next year. The others need to step up for me to get near my selection. Hot Streak looked smart last week, but this is tougher and Supplicant is tough but is he Group 1 class?

ALBERT BRIDGE 1550 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) what a race this is! My selection get the nod as I think he will lovet he trip and will the rain coming the ground should have sufficient juice in it to bring out his qualities over this trip. A good low draw helps his chances too. Pallasator is a giant, but I don't think he'll stay and his trainer wasn't that bullish about him. Tiger Cliff is class, but has alot of weight and a poor draw. The real danger could be Smoky Hill, who is thrown in on an eye catching mark. If you find the winner you're a good one!

I fancy a Fallon and Godolphin double at York with THOUWRA (PU) and OUT OF BOUNDS (Last!)

On the jumps front at Chepstow I have to have a flutter on the following

THE ROMFORD PELE 1615 – (2nd – 7-1) was a decent hurdler and not as good at that as his rivals but he always looked a stayer in the making with the smooth passage in the race he takes and coming off the pace late. Could be a chaser to follow this year.

FOR TWO 1645 – (3rd – 11-4) never finished his races off last year, with a bit more time now to have matured and strengthened I would expect to see him battling to the line and has a bit of class to see off the others

GAUVAIN 1715 – (unplaced) was class in his day and Hobbs is a master with the older horses and getting them going again. Had a pipe opener last time and Dickie opts for him over the other horse. He is class at his best and if he's on that form he'll murder these.

DUKE OF LUCCA 1745 – (unplaced) ran in some top races last year and was consistent. Is down in class and this mark is very appealing. He has to have a channce on his seasonal bow.

Monday’s Treble

It was good to see BROWN PANTHER win first time out yesterday. I love that horse and have followed it since it first ran. Below are my best three for Monday. Hopefully the nap dropping in grade can run well again.

HIPSTER 1940 WINDSOR (nap) – (unplaced) he drops back down to his last winning mark over the same distance too. Has been running in classes above this and maybe punching above his weight. The ground should be fine, even if it eases and he has a great chance at 14-1 as I type this on Sunday night.

BELLE BAYARDO 1700 CHEPSTOW (nb) – (2nd – 7-2) has course and distance form and ran well here two runs ago. Has won at this class and above and has nothing of the class of his las conqueror here.

MANDY'S BOY 1600 CHEPSTOW (treble) – (non runner) ran off colour on Saturday but is worth another crack here on a track not as stiff as the Haydock finish. A reproduction of his Newbury run should see him win this. Hughes on board is another plus.

Saturday Chances or Chancers?

The Cheltenham count down is well and truely on. Today gives us another chance to see a few potential contenders and we also have a Grand National Trial. Yesterday my nap EDMUND KEAN was very impressive and surely one to watch for the festival, the runner-up SEEDSMAN is also one to watch. I fancy a couple of David Pipe's today and I'm hoping the old boy above GILES CROSS can repeat last year's success.

Here are todays tips. I've done three Lucky 15's.

Lucky 15 Number 1

THE COCKNEY MACKEM 1515 ASCOT – (5th – 25-1) ran very well at the end of last season in some competitive chases. A superb second at the festival in the Byrne Plate behind Salut Flo shows this one has the ability. He has gone well fresh before and shouldn't be discounted back over hurdles. I've just got 25-1 on BetFred for this one which is a crazy price. Great each way chance!

CUE CARD 1550 ASCOT (nb) – (WON 15-8) this horse has bags of class and despite him stepping up in trip he still has enough ability at this distance to take this. He will never beat SPRINTER SACRE so connections' plan to change distance for me is sensible. Favourites have a cracking record in this race and the drop back in trip will suit and I think he will win comfortably.

MIAS BOY 1600 LINGFIELD – (4th – 7-1) I just can't leave this old favourite of mine and would back it to the death. He just got pipped last week at this course. He is back at a mile so will need a strong pace. I think that is what has resulted in places in the last two races is that he didn't get going soon enough. However, this is a step up in class. Must have a strong each way claim though.

SAOI 1635 LINGFIELD – (2nd – 3-1) bidding for a hat-trick and I was furious with myself for missing the first of those victories as I had backed it twice beforehand. He should appreciate the step up in trip and the form of his last two victories is strong and been franked by the runner up running to a place twice more.

Lucky 15 Number 2

VALCO DE TOUZAINE 1345 HAYDOCK – (3rd – 11-4) ran well in France and has two decent starts to his British career including a good second on his reappearance. He then ran creditably behind LORDOFTHEHOUSE next time out. Those runs should put him in with a smart chance today.

KENTFORD GREY LADY 1420 HAYDOCK (treble) – (4th – 2-1) she is a smart stayer and ran very well in third behind REVE DE SIVOLA in the Cleeve Hurdle last time. On that form she should take this today.

GILES CROSS 1455 HAYDOCK – (PU) he ran a cracker in the Welsh National and just emptied totally in the final few furlongs. At that point the stable had just come from being closed down so it was a damn good show. He won is last year ahead of NEPTUNE COLLONGES and we know what he went on to do. He loves the ground and the track and now that the stable are back with the winners again, he has a great chance to reclaim his crown. I have ran out of words for describing DENIS O'REGAN as a superb jockey and he will get the best out of him again.

SIXTY SOMETHING 1640 HAYDOCK (nap) – (unplaced) is a progressive horse as he showed when winning at Aintree and Bangor this season. He ran a bit under par last time at Doncaster behind STORM SURVIVOR but he still ran on well late in that race. O'REGAN's relaxed style will suit him and he should be crept into the race, fancy him big time to bounce back today.

Lucky 15 Number 3

AMIGO 1430 WINCANTON – (3rd – 13-8) won over 3 miles last time at Chpestow in a dogged style and he has been raised 3lbs for that success. With heavy ground again on the cards he should be thereabouts at the finish up the long Wincanton finish.

DIAMONDS RETURN 1615 WINCANTON – (PU) won three on the bounce at the end of last season including over course and distance and ran well last time out. Returns today and could continue that progressive trend, hopeful of a big run.

REAL MILAN 1405 ASCOT – (PU) whilst ROCKY CREEK is a worthy favourite after his impressive win at Warwick last time my selection has done nothing wrong so far in two novice chases and will revel in the mud. This is a big step up but he looks a smart one.

ASHKAZAR 1440 ASCOT – (LAST!!!!!) this old dog infuriates me! He can be absolutely class and was that at Cheltenham last season. He has so much ability but it depends how he feels. He'll either run well and give them something to think about or he won't be bothered and will be pulled up. I'm hoping for the first one at a pretty decent price.

So, quite a few selections today and I'm more than hopeful of my top three. I just have to say that THE COCKNEY MACKEM has such a good chance in my opinion today and I have put a little extra on him each way!

If you are having a bet, please do so within your means. If you like what you have read please give the blog a retweet or a follow. I do really appreciate people reading the blog as it takes a while to do.

Best of luck everyone and enjoy the racing!

Welsh National Tip

Well not too bad a day on the blog yesterday with DRAWNFROMTHEPAST (11-8) and BALLYGARVEY (9-4) winning for us. Was a shame that the nap DOOR BOY ran so poorly again, think that will be the last of my money he gets for a while. Anyway, on to today with the re-arranged Welsh National to look forward to plus some good supporting cards at Sandown and Wincanton. My tip for big one is above – I'mvsure you can guess who he is before you read below.

Here are my best three bets for today, plus a few others to watch out for.

LANDSCAPE 1405 WINCANTON (nap) – (unplaced) ran well last week when winning at Taunton and isn't penalised from that race. Harry Derham can also claim 5lbs today rather than 3 last week, so he's 2lb better off! The handicapper will surely hit him after this so it will be wise to get on him today. He's well handicapped on ground he'll like and over the right distance. He must have a huge chance.

SWNYMOR 1335 CHEPSTOW (nb) – (FELL) was a decent prospect on the flat and was impressive when winning first time out at Newbury. He really didn't have to beat much but the manner in which he did it was appealing. He should be thereabouts in this. The Nicholls runner is the unknown quantity!!

GILES CROSS 1520 CHEPSTOW (treble) e/w – (PU) what a great horse this is. It loves the mud and really battles well. He's been runner up in this twice already. The trip, ground and course will all suit. He has a weight to burden that only a select few have won with, but this boy is brave and will keep battling up the hill. Denis O'Regan gets on well with him and won well on him at Haydock last season. He's a great jockey and will keep him at the front going steady. I really think he can defy this weight and I think is a banker for a place at the least!

I also fancy the chances of HEY BIG SPENDER 1540 SANDOWN (unplaced) today. His run at Ascot wasn't great but he will have needed that and I think he can win this today off a mark he has won off before. I am also going for a Paul Nicholls treble with the following three :

KEPPOLS HILL 1300 CHEPSTOW – (WON 10-11) has been unlucky on both occasions previous and really should have won them both but for jumping errors. Today is the day!
ROGER BEANTOWN 1445 CHEPSTOW – (FELL) ran poorly at Cheltenham last time but his previous run here gives him a sniff and an extended distance should play to his strengths. Takes this before tackling fences.
GRANDIOSO 1330 WINCANTON – (2nd – 11-4) won well over course and distance last time and I think he will do the same again getting a run in off Tony Star.

Finally I'm having a flutter on WILLIAMS WISHES, (WON evens) POET (unplaced) AND SOFTSONG (unplaced) at SANDOWN all who I think have got great chances again today to take the money.

Well I hope there are a few winners in this lot today or I will be very disappointed, particiularly the best three. Remember these are my selections and I'm by no means an expert! If you are having a flutter, remember to do so within your means. Enjoy the racing and scream out loud for GILES CROSS!!

Saturday 27th Oct – tips

Here we are again another Saturday and another great set of cards. The last flat meeting today will crown Hughsie as champ, and why not, the man is class. An eventful week saw Frankel show us all what a superstar he is, and I'm still shocked that he isn't officially the best rated horse ever. Then we had the Channel Four reshuffle, personally I'm glad to see the back of Big Mac and Tommo. Floundering fools in my opinion. It's a shame John Francome opted out as I think he talks sense. However, lets see how it pans out before we make judgements. Had a decent winner or two in the week too, plucked CARAMELITA out midweek and I am sat at the top of the TEAMNAPS group on @Tweet_Naps which is great. Hopefully I can hold on until the end of the month.

On to today's selections – hope we get a winner or two.

MARUFO 1425 AINTREE (nap) – won a veterans chase well at Newbury a couple of outings ago and will stay the trip no problem. Can see him up with the pace and then bursting clear over the last!

NACARAT 1530 AINTREE (nb) – I can't believe this one is being overlooked by everyone. He stays 3m easily and jumps for fun from the front, I can see him bouncing away and no-one getting to him. Has strong Aintree record too!

LITTLE ROCKY 1545 NEWBURY (treble) – loves this testing ground and is in form with two wins out of the last three runs. Should run well again.

Also having a little stab on the Fallon magic with three rides that I reckon he has great chances on at Donny. All each way selections though.

FULGUR 1400 DONCASTER
PONTY ACCLAIM 1430 DONCASTER
STEELER 1505 DONCASTER

And finally two at Newbury TAWHID 1415 and NOBLE MISSION 1445. Hope there's a few winners here and also a little pointer towards two at Chepstow one of Paul Nicholls' SALUBRIOUS and one of my old favs BACK BOB BACK
