Doncaster and Newbury

With the festival on the horizon I’m starting to get my head around some of my potential fancies and stocking up the betting bank. I reckon it could be a much more open festival this year. There won’t be as many Mullins favourites going in and I think there is some potential value in the big races as well as the handicaps. Watch this space!!

On to today:

The best race of the day is the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster. THE LAST SAMURAI is using this, as last year, as a prep for the big one at Aintree. He will no doubt run a good race but he has 6lbs more weight to carry this year and races off a 12lb higher mark. WAKANDA will have to push it from the front after a change in tactics backfired last time and I think he will set it up for two of them. The first one is LOOKING WELL, he was staying on very well when defeated by ZIGA BOY here last time over a shorted trip. This longer distance could play to his strengths. However, I am opting for VIVALDI COLLONGES. He gives us a lot of value in the race and even though the rain isn’t perfect he has winning form on soft ground and worse. The jockey has a good record on him and he is racing off a good mark. The stats show that not many winners of this carry more than 10st 12lb, I don’t think that extra pound will make too much difference! He ran a stinker at Warwick last time behind a resurgent ONE FOR ARTHUR, it is noted that he did exactly the same last year and then won next time out. He also defeated the aforementioned at Kelso last year and therefore has some solid form. He will love the smaller field and I think he’ll run a big race at a big price.

VOCALISER ran a cracker last time at Haydock off a 4lb lower mark in a similar class 4 race. He was just pipped by DEEPSAND that day and the 3rd that day (RAISE A SPARK) and the 4th (CHEIFTAIN’S CHOICE) have both won since. I think he will win well today.

The Greatwood Hurdle has cut up a little due to the rain and I really fancy the chances of an old favourite, MELODIC RENDEZVOUS. He has lost his way a bit, but he is getting a bit long in the tooth. However, there was a bit of sparkle there behind YANWORTH last time and he has only ever run once before at a lowly level as this, and won. He should have too much class for these and will have the confidence to beat them off top weight! He’s good value!

Finally, VIC DE TOUZAINE, is a progressive looking horse and despite the step up in class, he should run well and will love the underfoot conditions. He was beaten when running well last time by DUSTY LARK, who had the benefit of course fitness. He is the one who catches the eye in a field of question marks.

Good luck whatever you’re on!

Doncaster Friday

COURT BY SURPRISE runs at Doncaster in the 2:15. He ran well in snatches last week at Sandown when well fancied by some, including me! This shorter trip should suit more and he is definitely poised to win. He has won here before and on good ground and drops to a class 3 handicap so potentially could be on a nice mark in this class. It’s unusual for him tobe turned out so quickly.

ITALIAN RIVIERA 2:50 DONCASTER is thriving at the moment and is unpenalised for a smooth success at Catterick last week. He could make it four out of four for this yard.

L’AIGLE ROYAL 2:40 CHELTENHAM has hardly turned out for the Skelton’s yet. The return to this trip will help and previously he was a decent horse running behind both DEFINITLY RED and AS DE MEE. The ground will help and he could run a big race.

One winner on the blog last week and it is the last time we'll see ROCK ON RUBY on a racecourse. Sad news to hear about him being retired but if it prolongs his life then it's worth it. What a fabulous horse he is and how much he has given to the cause. It was great to see him back to his best for one last time! Had retirement fella! On to Newbury today and the key early Gold Cup pointer race! I'm looking forward to watching what should be a awesome race!

Here are my selections for today :

FINGAL BAY 1500 NEWBURY (nap)
He broke a blood vessel in this last year and returns on a mark that is 9lbs lower than last year. He has always been a very smart horse, especially over hurdles. He has lowered the colours of SIMONSIG, DYNASTE and SOUTHFIELD THEATRE. He ran a creditable race behind SMAD PLACE at Kempton last time and is now 8lbs better off with that rival today. Over this extended distance that is alot and he has always enjoyed staying races. I'm sure they will have sorted his jumping out and he is now a 9 year old amd this may be his year as the top chasing horse. You need class to win this race and he has bags of it! SAPHIR DU RHEU is a lovely horse and his trainer thinks lots of him, but to win this with 11st 12lbs and as a six year old? Too much I reckon! BOBS WORTH showed a bit of form last time but I think the old flame for this type of race doesnt burn brightly enough. NED STARK is another that catches my eye.

MA FILLUELE 1350 NEWBURY (nb)
This one's price is shortening all the time! She didn't really run a race last time at Wetherby and she may now be better over the bigger obstacles. However, I'm intrigued that they persevere over hurdles and this slightly longer trip will help too. She's a classy mare and her mark has been dropped by a crazy 10lbs because of her Wetherby run. That's a full 23lbs lower than her chase mark where she has been second to the likes of HOLYWELL, BALDER SUCCESS and UXIZANDRE. Interestingly this is a return to a previous winning hurdles mark of OR134 when she beat SWINCOMBE FLAME over this trip at Warwick.

BIG CASINO 1315 NEWBURY (treble)
I really fancied this guy when he ran first time out at Cheltenham. He ran well for along way that day and just didn't stay the trip at that pace. He's been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper and also drops in class 2, as well as a three furlong shorter trip. That's a lot of boxes ticked for me, he also has an apprentice taking 5lbs off to give him a great racing weight. If they go positively with him again they not peg him back.

KATACHENKO 1355 DONCASTER
Defeated MON SUCCESSEUR at Wetherby on his seasonal debut in a class 3 chase just short of two miles. He steps back up in trip today but he has won at this distance before and he's only been raised one pound by the handicapper for his last win. MON SUCCESSEUR was only just pipped yesterday to boost the form a little and this horse is worth watching!

So here we are again, the flat season is back! As always we kick off at Donny with the Lincoln. I was fortunate enough to go last year and really enjoyed it! I've had a good look at the stats and form today and hopefully have found a few with a chance. Good luck with whatever you're on today!

The twitter gamble boys have opted for the following :
@Tonythetyke – BIG JIM UTTOXETER 1335
@liamkenniford – CALIFORNIA CHROME 1700 MEYDAN
@Fernando_RFC2 – AETNA 1435 DONCASTER
@dazgilbert1 – PERSONAL TOUCH 1605 CHELMSFORD

MASAMAH 1530 CHELMSFORD (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Ran a cracker last time at Lingfield in a Listed race and got a real head start with his speed only to be pipped by a few that were flying including the smart winner PRETEND. He looked like he may hold on that day and if he gets a flying start again there is nothing of that calibre to peg him back. This is a huge drop in class, he has 4lbs more weight the saddle but the apprentice takes 3 off, meaning he's effectively one pound higher in a class 2 handicap on the back of a smart run in a Listed race. Must have a great chance.

ASTAIRE 1435 DONCASTER (nb) (2nd – 2-1 = £1.25)
He has a plum draw and is tackling much easier opposition here today. He's a pound lower than his last winning mark which was OR111 when he beat HOT STREAK in the Middle Park Stakes. He went up against the big guns after that in Group 1's and he was a half length behind MAAREK in the Duke of York Clipper Stakes at York too. This is much easier and I can't see him being beaten. AETNA is a classy mare and goes well fresh but I'm not sure it will be soft enough for her

WHAT ABOUT CARLO 1545 (treble) (4th – 20-1 = £12.50)
This as always is a tough one to crack. You need a smart horse with a touch of class! GM HOPKINS and MANGE ALL have closely matched form which is smart but I think the Gosden horse has the edge. BRONZE ANGEL won the Cambridgeshire and then followed up at Ascot last year but surely ts is too competitive and too much off his mark of OR111. GABRIAL has bags of class but his head isn't screwed on and you never know what you're going to get. MONDIALISTE is interesting being bought by a shrewd yard out of Freddie Head's yard in France. He could be anything and is maybe one to follow this year. My option is WHAT ABOUT CARLO, he's got a decent draw to go either way and I have always thought he had a bit of class. He beat END OF LINE easily off OR85 and then followed that up by beating BLACK SHADOW on Derby day at Epsom, that was when he went in the notebook off OR94. He was then thrown in to the deep end in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood and then back into a handicap off a mark of OR100. His warm up race at Lingfield in the Winter Derby Trial but he didnt like the surface and it was too hot. Back in this company he has a cracking chance.

SWIFTLY DONE 1510 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)
this horse hasn't run for a while but he was one who I had my eye on a couple of seasons ago. He was runnnig consistently well in some decent handicaps and I always keep my eye on the trainers horses up north. He is only 2lbs higher in the ratings than his last win when beating CLASSIC COLORI over this course and distance. He then followed that up at Newcastle and had MEMORY CLOTH and EXTRATERRESTRIAL behind him. He ran ok in the Betfred Mile thay year at Goodwood and had BELGIAN BILL and PRONCE OF JOHANNE beat. It's a tough ask on his first run but like I said he has consistent form and is worth a go.

Grim up North!!

Not a great deal of success last week I'm afraid and I was gutted at how poorly LANDSCAPE ran when I was so confident of a big run! The only liitle bit of success was WOODFORD COUNTY'S third in the Eider! We win some, we lose some. As I'm sure all of you are, I'm counting the days down to the festival – bring it on! Had such a busy week this week with work and I'm looking forward to kicking back and watching this sport we all love today. Whatever your we earned dosh is on, good luck and I hope you get a shout and win some back of the old foe.

The twitter gamble boys have opted for these four today – give them a follow again and I hope today is the day their four timer comes in.
@Tonythetyke –
@Fernando_RFC2 – FILFIL 1555 MEYDAN
@LiamKenniford – SOUND INVESTMENT 1525 NEWBURY
@DazGilbert1 – KAI BROON 1535 KELSO

Here are my selections :

MON PARRAIN 1545 DONCASTER (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Showed his true class when winning for the blog at 25-1 on New Years Day at Cheltenham. I was really confident of him that day and I know some of you were on him too! I'm even more confident he can take this today! He has been raised 6lbs for his win, but I still think he is a better horse than he new mark and there is more to come. These types of races over longer distances that need him to be bold and brave bring out the best in him. There are other front runners who will push him too today. Sean Bowen returns and takes 5lbs off to help our cause more yet for me the biggrst factor is the ground, he loves good ground! Sit back and enjoy!

SOUND INVESTMENT 1525 NEWBURY (nb) (WON 7-2 = £12.25)
Paul Nicholls has won 6 of the last 9 runnings of this and today my selection can make it 7. I backed him last night at 5-1 and as I type this he is 11-4 in places – the money is coming! He is a smart horse and has some decent form in the bag; beating DOLATULO at Sandown and running well in fifth beihnd THE YOUNG MASTER over a distance too long. He drops back in trip today and the ground will help, he has a big weight to carry but is the best horse in the race for me.

ROALCO DES FARGES 1415 NEWBURY (treble) (unplaced = -£5.00)
He is two from two here, and if he reproduces that or his Cheltenham run back in October he will win is easily in my opinion. The concern is his last two runs which have been a little poor to be honest. He's been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper to OR140 and that is still a mark he hasn't won off. However, the opposition are the key; there Re no young upstarts here! Horses his own age or older are there to be taken! Horses for courses – he should run well today!

KELVINGROVE 1510 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)
BATAVIR is a decent horse but can he win three on the bounce after a 13lb hike form win one, I dont think so. My selection ran well when beaten by a short head by PULL THE CHORD in January and was then upped in trip at Haydock and ran well in a good race. The key for me here again is the ground. I think he will improve loads for the better ground, having won on good to firm on the flat!

KINGS GREY 1400 DONCASTER (UR = -£5.00)
BALLYOLIVER 1415 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)

Trials Day at Cheltenham

We know we are not too far from the festival when trials day is upon us. We also have a the Skybet chase at Donny too! God I love NH racing! I hope you followed the blog last week as my fine form continued with a win for the nap REBEL REBELION at 12-1 and also a win for BITOFAPUZZLE at 5-2. I'm hoping to continue this run going again and think I've found a great nap and a couple of decent prices in the big handicaps! I'm sat doing the blog on a Friday night for a change ready to go out with some old work colleagues for a nice Italian. Tomorrow is a busy day as I'm in school most of the day for rehearsals for the school play – OUR DAY OUT so wont get chance to watch the races until I get home! Sadly I may have to miss the #twittergamble out this week as I may not get time to hear from the lads. If I did you'll see it below. Whatever you are sticking your well earned money on, good luck in our continuing battle with old enemy – the bookie!

VAGO COLLONGES 1500 CHELTENHAM (nap) – (3rd – 8-1 = £5.00)
This fella really has some smart form in the bag! His season started with a defeat by THOMAS BROWN who has since franked the form with a victory and is now rated 6lbs better than my selection. THOMAS BROWN was defeated prior to his win by OUT SAM from the Henderson yard, who has since gone on to win again! Even more interestingly third in that race that day, behind THOMAS BROWN was a certain TEA FOR TWO who then went on to win two on the bounce including the demolition of the field in the Lanzarote. Told you it was smart form didn't I! My guy has also been ultra-consistent in all his runs and has been knocking at the door and could take a race like this. Bring it on! He's 7-1 as I type this!

NIGHT IN MILAN 1515 DONCASTER (nb) – (3rd – 12-1 = £7.50)
Loves it here, and ran so well when a narrow second, by a head, to one of my old favourites GRANDADS HORSE here last time. My guy was 5lbs worse off in the weights that day and they reoppose here with only a pound difference! Effectively he's 4lbs better off. He is also better off in the ratings too, my guy has been raised 2lbs to a mark of OR146, whereas his old nemesis was raised 6lbs for his win to a mark of OR145. It's tight and there are some other smart horses too, but I reckon my guy has it today, he's a better horse than when pulled up in this last year and I'm hopeful of a big run

BIG FELLA THANKS 1425 CHELTENHAM (treble) – (2nd – 25-1 = £15.62)
This guy is on such an appealing mark I have to have a bet on him! He has been a real star over the years and is in his twilight yet he still has ability. He has dropped to a mark of OR135, that is a full 10lbs lower than his last winning mark. You may say this is because he is in decline. For me though he's just been up against top horses and on a tough mark. He ran well in behind the likes of MA FILLEULE, TRANQUIL SEA and CHANCE DU ROY last year. He was also beaten by my selection PACHA DU POLDER a few years back in a hot race, that was off a mark 19lbs higher than this. He is also racing off a decent weight below 11 stone too and this could be his day!

BLACK RIVER 1315 CHELTENHAM – (unplaced = -£5.00)
This guy has flattered to deceive so far, yet I have to stick with him as I beleive he is such a talented horse and exciting prospect and this track may bring out the best in him. I'm putting last time down to awful ground as I think it really was bottomlesss that day. He runs off the same mark today and has to have a good shout in a competitive race. He did beat VAUTOUR as a juvenile! Game on!

Cheltenham and Donny (just!)

myWPEdit Image

We I must say I’m a tad disappointed by the racing on offer today. There are some class horses on show but the number of entries really is poor. Other than the big chase at Cheltenham there is not much handicapping which The Bandit loves to try and solve. However, beggars cannot be choosers and we still have the likes of Rock on Ruby, The New One and Caid Du Berlais on offer. One more week of work left to go before the big Xmas break, I’ve managed to get most of the old shopping done so can sit back and relax and enjoy the festivities.

The boys return for a twitter gamble this week, only one winner Lightening Rod me out of last week’s bet, but we remain ever hopeful!

The boys have opted for :

@LiamKenniford ROCK ON RUBY 1545 CHELTENHAM

@Fernando_RFC2 SEWN UP 1845 WOLVERHAMPTON

@DazGilbert1 CYFLYMDER 1425 SOUTHWELL

@TonytheTyke IKORODU ROAD 1340 DONCASTER

Here are my selections for today :

IKORODU ROAD 1340 DONCASTER (NAP) – (3rd – 7-1 = £4.37) has a decent record here and won in 2012 here beating JUNIOR off a mark of 131. Today he runs off 134, this being a previous winning mark and only a pound higher than his last success in October 2013. Hr has also had a couple of near misses here and while he can go better over further I think the ground will be really tacky today and play to his strengths. GRANDDADS HORSE did me a real favour last time at Ascot and gave me a tidy profit but he prefers better ground and I think he will struggle today giving my horse 5lbs.

ROCK ON RUBY 1545 CHELTENHAM (NB) – (WON – 5-4 = £3.90) what an old favourite this guy is. Ran in snatches last time over a trip a bit too sharp for him but he was still there trying to give more at the end. This is his race for the taking today, especially getting 5lbs from LAC FONTANA and he doesn’t have a penalty to carry for the first time in eons!!! Game on!!

SOLAR IMPULSE 1325 CHELTENHAM (TREBLE) – (PU = -£5.00) I have been really impressed with this horse this year, and he’s still only a baby yet! Ran well at Wetherby on good ground beating TURN OVER SIVOLA and then just found MONETAIRE too good last time on ground a little soft. Today he has slightly better ground and despite a 5lb rise I still think he has more to offer.

CAID DU BERLAIS 1400 CHELTENHAM – (PU = -£5.00) I honestly didn’t think he would have enough to win the Paddy Power but the more I look at that performance the more I like it. To beat JOHN’S SPIRIT in that manner and he is a damn good yard stick at Cheltenham was nothing but impressive and I think they have turned him out quickly again because they think they have a smart horse here. I tend to agree, this is very competitive too but he looks like he has more to offer and a 5lb rise may not stop him.

My Dad’s selections are :

NO BUTS 1400 CHELTENHAM (unplaced = -£5.00)

BLAKLION 1435 CHELTENHAM (WON 9-4 = £7.03)

A Soggy Saturday!

myWPEdit Image

The Bandit writes the blog from a very soggy, miserable Sheffield this morning and the ground at nearby Doncaster is going to be very testing. Not the greatest Saturday on the betting front I’ve seen and I know a few of my fellow twitterati are looking to opt pout today. However, jumps is my baby so I’ve had to have a look and hopefully I’ve found a few to whet the appetite ready for the first being meeting at Cheltenham next weekend. I always bet with my heart and have to follow the horses who I know have the class in the bag there are a few of those today, so please as always remember these are my thoughts and my horses that are close to me, so I’m not saying slap all your wages on them! I hope they run a good race and that we get a good cheer, potentially there are four decent winners here!

Sit back and enjoy the best you can on this dreary day!

OPENING BATSMAN 1440 WINCANTON (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) this boy is a cliff horse for me and one I always keep an eye on and follow. To say he had a disaster last season is an understatement, yet here he is at a decent 12-1 in a competitive race, why not be a big outsider based on last year? Easy, he’s a class horse and his mark today is very eye-catching. The handicapper has given him a real chance today. He beat ROLLING ACES in the Racing Plus Chase the other year of a mark of 140 – so now you see! I just hope the rest over the summer and the cheekpieces have rekindled the old fire in his belly. Fehily will stoke him up if so!

JACK DEXTER 1425 DONCASTER (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) he won this race last year off a big penalty and comes here in form off the back of a veery good second on horrible ground to GORDON LORD BYRON at Ascot. He is also albs better off today with the second placed horse that day TROPICS. He also loves it here and will love the mud, and boy oh boy has it been raining here this morning! Has to have a super chance!

ROCK ON RUBY 1515 WINCANTON (TREBLE) – (3rd – 4-1 = £2.50) the star is back! A class horse in this sphere and proved that when getting beaten a head by THE NEW ONE at Aintree after a dismal showing when chasing earlier in the year. That form, plus his earlier hurdle form, is by far and away the best of offer here. He has to give lumps of weight away to IRVING but that one needs to prove he has it at this level, and I’m not sure he has it, especially based on his Cheltenham run.

POLLY PEACHUM 1405 WINCANTON – (WON 6-1 = £18.75) this one comes with a warning. She’s one I love and there are a few question marks against her today. That being the ground, she needs decent ground as you saw when she beat L’UNIQUE last year and was just pipped by SOUTHFIELD THEATRE, smart form you’ll agree! The weight she has to give away is the second question against her. However, she is a class mare and I have thought highly of her since I saw her demolish her rivals in a bumper at Warwick. Can she lug the weight? Yes, she’s going to be even better than her current mark suggests in my opinion, the ground is my sticking point today. She’s one for your notebooks though.

The Flat Finale

myWPEdit Image

The blog returns after a couple of weeks off due to my busy schedule! My dad has put in a real late burst over the past couple of weeks and he tipped up both INTEGRAL (7-2) and INTRANSIGENT (16-1) – his second big priced winner in a row. Its narrowed the weekly competition to 14-15 as we head into this final week.Profit stands at £170.12 to me compared to £125.06 to him. Another big winner or two will see him possibly win but with the returns of the jumps I’m confident of holding on today! We will start the competent form scratch again next week for the jumps season. We’re both NH lovers so hopefully the blog will produce some good winners for everyone over the winter months! The flat season is brought to a close today with the Racing Post Trophy being the highlight, it’s been another cracker with some real standout performances. My horse of the summer has to be TAGROODHA though, awesome filly!

Enjoy the racing today and hopefully we’ll give you winner or two again on the blog!

CELESTIAL PATH 1550 DONCASTER (NAP) (3rd – 6-1 = £3.75) I have backed this fella on both his runs this year and was wondering where Sir Mark would send him next. It’s unusual to see the Prescott yard send out a horse in a race like this, but hen they do you have to sit up and take notice. Think of CONFIDENTIAL LADY, HOORAY, ALBORADA. This guy has looked a smart proposition and is well bred, running green on both starts but still having the class to see it out in the closing stages.The ground is a bit unknown but his breeding (FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND/HAWKWING) indicates it shouldn’t be a problem. I really excited about this horse, particularly next season as a 3 year old. A big race run I reckon today!

ELUSIVITY 1515 DONCASTER (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) I’ve settled for this guy over another two who have recent form but I think their mark will catch them out; those being DUNGANNON and KICKBOXER. I’ve opted for this selection as the ground being truly soft brings his past form more into play and he is now running off a very appealing mark, albs lower than this time last year. He has a high draw, a feather weight and the ground well in his favour. 20-1 as I write this could be a silly price, a great each way chance in my opinion.

ROLLING ACES 1500 AINTREE (TREBLE) – (3rd 8-1 = £5.00) The Nicholls’ string have generally needed a run, but this fella is a class horse and I’m expecting big things from him this season. His second to BOSTON BOB over course and distance join April was a cracking run and with the ground being decent it will allow him to show his true colours. He does have a high mark but I think he will go on to better things this year after this, and will a solid round of jumping he must have a great chance.

THE PIRATES QUEEN 1535 CHEPSTOW – (3rd 7-2 = £2.18) this mare is waiting for her first hurdles win. She has ran well in a few races last year, particularly with a bit of cut in the ground. She was put in her place by As I Am when going off favourite at Cheltenham last time out but the ground wasn’t soft enough that day. Today she has a nice weight allowance and the excellent O’Regan on board. I think she will be really competitive.

St Leger Day

myWPEdit Image

Unfortunately I haven’t had a great deal of time this morning to get any detail down for the blog. The last classic of the flat season is upon us already, where has that season gone again. I used to go every year to the St. Leger until we had our children and we had pencilled in to go this hear but our friends couldn’t make it, gutted to as the horse I own a minute share in is running there today!

HARTNELL 1550 DONCASTER (NAP) – I think this fella has a great chance today. I’m hoping he breaks my Leger duck too, Ive not win it since Brian Boru! I love the fact that he stays two miles and if he is handy turning into the straight, with stamina guaranteed and a real battling quality they may not get past him. For me Kingston Hill will not win.

HUMIDOR 1440 DONCASTER (NB) – Goldream has been a real favourite and money maker for me this year but I think he’s handicapped to his best now. This guy has a cracking record here, he’s 2-3 including a Listed win and finish first over this trip in the flying 5f at Epsom in a void race. Its such a competitive race this, but my selection must be up there from his high draw.

SAKHEES RETURN 1700 DONCASTER (TREBLE) –this is the horse I own a mini stake in through the #Teamchoochoo group on twitter. The step up to a mile will suit him and he’s targeted at better races than this. He won well over 6f earlier in the year and he will be ridden to win today. Hope he runs well and places at least, but more importantly returns safe and sound

ES QUE LOVE 1515 DONCASTER – I love this horse and last week the trip was too short for me against some very talented out and out sprinters. This trip and the conditions will bring the best out of him despite the penalty he carries, should run another big race.
