St Leger Day

myWPEdit Image

Unfortunately I haven’t had a great deal of time this morning to get any detail down for the blog. The last classic of the flat season is upon us already, where has that season gone again. I used to go every year to the St. Leger until we had our children and we had pencilled in to go this hear but our friends couldn’t make it, gutted to as the horse I own a minute share in is running there today!

HARTNELL 1550 DONCASTER (NAP) – I think this fella has a great chance today. I’m hoping he breaks my Leger duck too, Ive not win it since Brian Boru! I love the fact that he stays two miles and if he is handy turning into the straight, with stamina guaranteed and a real battling quality they may not get past him. For me Kingston Hill will not win.

HUMIDOR 1440 DONCASTER (NB) – Goldream has been a real favourite and money maker for me this year but I think he’s handicapped to his best now. This guy has a cracking record here, he’s 2-3 including a Listed win and finish first over this trip in the flying 5f at Epsom in a void race. Its such a competitive race this, but my selection must be up there from his high draw.

SAKHEES RETURN 1700 DONCASTER (TREBLE) –this is the horse I own a mini stake in through the #Teamchoochoo group on twitter. The step up to a mile will suit him and he’s targeted at better races than this. He won well over 6f earlier in the year and he will be ridden to win today. Hope he runs well and places at least, but more importantly returns safe and sound

ES QUE LOVE 1515 DONCASTER – I love this horse and last week the trip was too short for me against some very talented out and out sprinters. This trip and the conditions will bring the best out of him despite the penalty he carries, should run another big race.

My Dad’s selections are :

Top of the Glas 1420 Chester (now a NR)

Pinzolo 1455 Chester

High on Life 1440 Doncaster

Windshear 1550 Doncaster

First week back at my job after a six week break and it feels as if we’ve never been away! Meanwhile the Scoop 6 cranks up to another level and has us all dreaming of being millionaires. Of course the races chosen give us all practically no chance! We can live the dream though. My selections are :

Race Two – Valbchek (2)

Race Three – Buckstay (7)

Race Four – Big Thunder (6)

Race Five – Agent Murphy (2)

Race Six – Es Que Love (4)

Kingwell Hurdle 2005

John Smith’s Hurdle 2005

Long Distance Hurdle 2005,2006,2007

Cleeve Hurdle 2008

What a superstar of a hurdler this boy was. He was the first horse to lower the colours of the mighty BARACOUDA at Cheltenham, going on to win three World Hurdles (then Long Distance Hurdle) before BIG BUCKS came on the scene. He took staying hurdling to another level. He always had a characteristic flat spot in a race and then came into the race over the last flight and kicked on. Was a wonderful horse and I would have loved to have seen him race against BIG BUCKS. One of my favourite hurdlers of my generation.

On to todays selections, after a poor few weeks my dad has crept back up the leaderboard for number of wins but I’ve still got the profit well above. Lets hope there are a few winners today! A great race day with something like 45 races on offer, sit back and enjoy as we head towards the Leger next week.

BIG THUNDER 1515 HAYDOCK (NAP) – (NR) full steam ahead on Big Thunder Mountain – yeeeehaaaa! This guy was very progressive last year beating the likes of SALUTATION and GLENARD before fluffing his lines a little this season. I don’t think connections have got the trip right this year and the interesting factor here is the drop back in trip for me. 14furlongs is about right for him in my opinion and he is 2 from 3 at Haydock, including over this distance. He has also won on genuine good ground and the Prescott yard have had two winners in two days from these middle distance sorts. Massive chance!

CELESTIAL PATH 1700 HAYDOCK (NB) – (WON 11-8 = £4.29) another Prescott selection but one I’ve been waiting for. He won very well first time out at York at 16-1 and the form of the race has been franked with the 2nd, 4th and 6th in the race all winning. The yard have been patent with him and have waited for the right race with right conditions, the step up to a mile shouldn’t be a problem. He’s entered in the Racing Post Trophy and the Derby, could be a really nice horse!

ES QUE LOVE 1550 HAYDOCK (TREBLE) – (unplaced = -£5.00) what a cracking race this is, firstly I cannot see SOLE POWER winning this race. His record over 6f is 0 wins! My guy has more miles on the clock than a Being 747, the Johnston yard had him out practically ever week last year. However, his move to the Cox yard has brought out real improvement and his last two runs have been really eye catching. If he is ridden up near the pace I really think he has the taking of this!

AGENT MURPHY 1530 ASCOT – (3rd – 12-1 = £7.50) has been impressive to watch this year and has been raised another albs in the ratings for his second to Redkirk last time. I think he is a smart horse and despite a few question marks about his stamina on the breeding, I’m intrigued to see how he does. If he stays he has a hell of a chance!

My Dad’s selections are :

DON’T CALL ME 1355 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

HASSLE 1515 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)

GWAFA 1530 ASCOT (2nd – 8-1 = £5.00)

HOT STREAK 1550 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)

Glorious Goodwood Day 2

Not a bad first day on the blog with ES QUE LOVE obliging at 7-1. I was really pleased for the horse as he has ran so consistently in top races this year and now has a Group 2 to his name. On twitter I also put up Cheworee each way in the last and he came second at 25-1. On to Day 2 and hopefully a little bit more profit. I'm out all day though with my dad and the kids at the seaside, so results only!
LIEUTENANT MILLER 1350 (nap) – ran well last time at Ascot off the back of a decent season last year. He was second in this last year and third in the Ceasarewitch. He should run a big race and the ground should suit and the booking of Ryan Moore is a real plus. Should run a big race.
OBSERVATIONAL 1430 (nb) – battled well here earlier in the season on rained softened ground and its that positive attitude that makes me opt for him in this. The step up in class is a question mark but he looks a smart proposition. The ground is being watered so it shouldn't be too quick for him.
DR NO 1540 (treble) – wasn't too far off the pace in the Coventry behind the The Wow Signal and had Kodi Bear just infront of him. The form of that race is working out and I reckon he will take this over the other Hannon runner.
GEORGE ROOKE 1720 – has been runnnig consistently well and is only a pound higher than a previous winning mark. The trainer has sent it a fair way and the booking of Moore again is a real eye catcher.

Glorious Goodwood Day One

The start of the Glorious Goodwood festival. It always makes me feel summer has really arrived when it comes around. Mark Johnston uses it as a diary favourite. His string always seem to do well here, and I always seem to back his horse that lose! Lets hope its a good week, loads of Group races but some cracking handicaps too.
NICEOFYOUTOTELLME 1355 GOODWOOD (nap) (unplaced) this guy has some smart form in the book. His success at Newmarket in May is pretty strong. He won the9 furlong contest that day and had FARRAAJ back in fourth over fourth lengths behind. He has been raised 7lbs for it yet after FARRAAJ's exploits that horse is 19lbs higher in the ratings. Surely more to come. Charles Camoin I hoped would win at Ascot on Friday but the weather put pay to that. STORMACHION has 2 wins at this and looks progressive. I'm not sure SEA SHANTY will stay.
LESHA 1650 GOODWOOD (nb) – (unplaced) has improved a boat load this year and couldnt quite go with them the last time. Previous to that ran well and won a shade cosily at Haydock in a decent race against VOYAGEOFDISCOVERY. Taking on older horse here but has to have a chance of running well again.
ES QUE LOVE 1505 GOODWOOD (treble) – (WON – 7-1) he has been running very well in some smart races. I have always thougt he was better over further and this step up to 7 furlongs will help him I reckon. He was unlucky last time against MUSIC MASTER and has had good runs behind MAAREK and HAMZA earlier in the season. TOORMORE is the obvious danger but I reckon he'll struggle.
BIG THUNDER 1540 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) the Northumberland Plate was too far and too competitive for his seasonal return. This drop back to 14 f on good ground will suit better and he was very progressive last year. The Prescott yard is going much better too. Hopeful of a big run but fearful of REPEATER returning to form with Ryan Moore back on board.

Royal Ascot Day One

I start the blog today with news that the horse I have a tiny share in won on his second race course start yesterday. SAKHEE'S RETURN won at a massive 20-1! Lets hope there is a lot more of those for the boy, this time next year he could be at Ascot!!!
Right, time to doff the hat, get the champers out and regail in our land – the royal meeting has arrived. A cracking spectacle of quality horses! I cant wait to watch this week and seeing what stories are made. Below are my day one selections – good luck to all.

Toronado will be all the rage and rightly so with his form from last year, but 300 days off could leave him wanting and odds-on won't do it for me. I'm opting for SOFT FALLING RAIN (nb) who has always looked a class horse, the ground continuing to dry out will help his chances further and I think he'll run a huge race.

A Paul Hanagan/Al Maktoum double for me. ADAAY was very impressive when winning both starts at Newbury and Yarmouth. There will be more to come from this one and I think he can take this. Mr O'Brien has a decent record in this and War Envoy will be primed for a better run this time.

SHEA SHEA (treble) deserves to win a race like this. He so nearly did last year before SOLE POWER wore him down on the line. I hope my boy will hold on this time with Soumillon in the saddle. HOT STREAK could run a cracker but will probably get Spencer'd and I'm fascinated to see how ES QUE LOVE runs over five!

I backed KINGMAN in the Guineas and he just failed, he won the Irish equivalent easy and I think he will put NIGHT OF THUNDER in his place in this race. Nothing else to say – go champ!

I'm not a big fan of these staying races other than the Gold Cup. Nicky Henderson always has to be feared in these, but I really don't fancy any of his. SIZZLER ran a few crackers last year and could be there at the end but I'm opting for VILLA ROYALE who ran so well last time at York and with the stable in form, could run a big race.

This is a cracking end to the day. I really fancy MIDTERM BREAK (NAP) I watched him run at Ripon first time out and he looked a smart horse. He has since improved further and is proving to be a decent prospect. This is another big step up but one I think he can take. MERDON CASTLE could be the danger with form through KOOL KOMPANY.

The Lincoln

myWPEdit Image

So we welcome the flat season back again! The best news this year is that for the first time ever I’m off to the Lincoln meeting courtesy of winning some tickets from the guys @Raceclear. Thank you very much and I’m looking forward to a top day out. It was a decent week last week on the blog with winners for ROALCO DE FARGES (7-2), GEORGE GURU (4-1) and STEPPER POINT (16-1). That put me firmly back in the race with my old man!

On to Saturday, here are my selections for the blog and also all my selections for Doncaster! The forecast ground is soft but there hasn’t been much rain up here today and the forecast is the be pretty decent tomorrow so I predict Good to soft ground.

TULIUS 1550 DONCASTER (NAP) – (2nd – 7-1 = £4.38) was a very smart horse in 2012 with some smooth victories on ground on the softer side. He rattled up three straight victories on this type of ground beating the likes of MEMORY CLOTH, SKILFUL and SOVEREIGN DEBT. After a couple of sub-standard runs especially when I really fancied him at Newmarket he has dropped to an official rating of 109, three pounds below that when he last run. The rain has helped, he has the top young jockey aboard and must have a great chance.

GLOBAL VILLAGE 1515 DONCASTER (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) was second in the Lincoln last year of a mark of 94, returns here two pounds lower in the ratings and off top weight. Has always seemed at his best on softer than good and from stall 13 he could be perfectly placed to run a big race.

ES QUE LOVE 1440 DONCASTER (TREBLE) – (NR) my old favourite returns! He has changed yards after a monstrous season last year. He hasn’t run over 6 furlongs for a while but if he runs as he did last year going from the front and aggressive they may not get to him. He has some solid form in the bag at 6 furlongs too, with narrow defeats to MIRZA (off 106!!) and SLADE POWER. A decent outside chance I reckon! I think he will get a place but my win money in this race has to be on MAUREEN who has a great record first time out and was a Guineas horse last year, with weight allowance too she has to have a great chance.

MONSIEUR JIMMY 1330 DONCASTER – (unplaced = -£5.00) this horse comes from the stable I always follow, that of Declan Carroll. They had an impressive record last year with two year olds and this one has a good sprinting pedigree by Monsieur Bond, however, these race can be a lottery but I’m certainly willing to give him a fair shout.

My other Doncaster selections are :

My Dad’s selections :

MAUREEN 1440 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)

SHAVANSKY 1455 KEMPTON (unplaced = -£5.00)

Saturday selections

Well the less said about my selections yesterday the better, not even a place! Onwards we go with some sorrow in my heart, the reason for this is my six week holiday has come to an end and I'm back at work on Monday! Let's hope I can find a few winners today to cheer me up!
BOBOWEN 1555 NEWTON ABBOT (nap) – (unplaced) he is up 9lbs for his very impressive win in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. He won that very comfortably that day and looked like a horse on the up. Put a line through his run at Galway in the plate as he was never travelling and I'm not sure the ground suited.
LUPO D'ORO 1405 SANDOWN (nb) – (unplaced) beat Rocket Rob here in June and that form is rock solid after that horse bolted clear yesterday, it may have been in a lesser race but this guy also ran creditably behind the pressive Glen Moss last time out and I think he has a great chance today.
BAILEYS JUBILEE 1430 BEVERLEY (treble) – (unplaced) this horse was my initial fancy for the 1000 Guineas on the back of some impressive performances as a two year old. She ran no race in the Nell Gwyn and something was clearly amiss as she hasnt been out since. Despite her poor draw I think she has a great chance and has bags of speed plus battling qualities, and three year olds have a decent record in this race too.
DOCTOR PARKES 1420 CHESTER – (unplaced) is a course and distance winner and the ground and draw to suit today. He ran well and caught my eye when staying on in the final furlong behind Bogart last time at York. From his draw today he should be up with the pace which should benefit.
ES QUE LOVE 1455 CHESTER – (3rd – 7-2) this horse deserves to win a race soon! They've tried enough! He has a good draw today and is the class horse in the race. Being ridden prominent has really helped him and that should boost his chances today, he may be hard to pass in the Chester straight.
TEMPEST FUGIT 1530 CHESTER – (unplaced) will stay the trip and could have been overlooked by a few today. He travels nicely and didjust that when winning at Lingfield in a Lister race last time.
MERCERS ROW 1505 BEVERLEY – (unplaced) has a cracking record here and especially with Danny Tudhope on board. Ran well a couple of runs ago behind Bondi Beach Boy and has a solid each way chance today.
ASATIR 1550 SANDOWN – (unplaced) will appreciate the ground today and should improve more for the step up in distance after winning quite nicely over a mile. A decent priceto bounce back today.

Saturday selections

Good morning all! The blog is being written sat outside my caravan in sunny Looe. I'm just at the start of hopefully a cracking two weeks of sunshine, pasties and cream teas! A really good day of racing ahead – if you're having a flutter, good luck, and hopefully I can find a few here.

ES QUE LOVE 1515 ASCOT (nap) – (unplaced) cliff horse alert! I love this fella and he has been running consistently well this season, with I think 16 runs already under his belt! With the early entry on this race he is effectively 6lb well in and considering his last few runs that can't be sniffed at. Olivier Peslier rode his aggressively when they were paired up last and he should do the same today on a track that will suit. If he has chance to win a race, today has to be the day!

COULSTY 1630 NEWMARKET (nb) – (2nd – 9-4) absolutely demolished his rivals first time out at Leicester and despite his no show in the Norfolk he should bounce back today and I think the 3-1 as I write this is very big! Expecting him to put this to bed.

SIRIUS PROSPECT 1420 YORK (treble) – (WON 11-2) was a very smart sprinter a couple of years ago and has lost his way. This type of race may be more his level and he could bounce back today, especially without Shane Kelly on board.

BACCARAT 1530 YORK – (unplaced) won over course and distance and has dead-heated this year. Forget his last run and with a resproduction of previous efforts here has a great each way shout.
NEIGHBOTHER 1715 YORK – (unplaced) won a decent maiden well at Warwick and was then pitched in the deepend a bit. He should have the quality take this and may then head handicapping soon.
I also fancy these two each way at Ascot.
MAHLAH 1405 – (unplaced) could have been overlooked by Hughes and the betting market to be honest. His win at Doncaster was decent and the form has been franked since.
MACHETE MARK 1440 ASCOT – (2nd – 8-1) comes back here to run again after a decent performance at Royal Ascot. Interesting me on that alone!

Scorchio Saturday Tips

What a scorching day it is again today and blue skies dominate the scene here in sunny Sheffield. Terribly sad news this week came from the sport we love and lets hope Brian Toomey pulls through and makes a full recovery. Puts it into perspective what jockeys go through to bring us this sport we love. Thoughts with his family and friends.
On to today's races. One of the most competitive Eclipses for a while with not much seperating most of the field on ratings. Here are my selections today plus my Bandit's treble as normal.
CAPO ROSSO 1640 HAYDOCK (nap) – (unplaced) this horse won impressively at Warwick on quicker ground in early May and then ran well in defeat here at Haydock after that. The Brittania was too far and too competitive and this return to 7f on quick ground will play to his strengths from the front. He's dropped a pound from that and is only a pound higher than when being beat here by SO BELOVED.
KINGSGATE NATIVE 1405 SANDOWN (nb) – (2nd – 17-2) ran his no show race last time at the Royal meeting and this drop in grade and quicker ground will help him. He was running in great form prior to Ascot and a reproduction of that will see him take this. The quicker the ground the better for him!
THE FUGUE 1550 SANDOWN (treble) – (unplaced) I thought she ran a decent race at Ascot and it will have brought her on leaps and bounds. The girls don't have a great record in this but I think she will take this. She will love the ground and will be a lot closer come the furlong pole and she can storm past them.
WOODLAND ARIA 1515 SANDOWN – (unplaced) she was impressive first time out and looks a filly to watch. The mile is her optimum trip and I fancy her beat NARGYS here, my only worry is the ground may be too quick for her.
As well as these four I'm going with the following four in an each way Lucky 15.
BANOFFEE 1455 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) won very well at Chester and then was supplemented for the Oaks where the track and more importantly the ground beat her. On a faster surface here she should show her true form.
ES QUE LOVE 1440 SANDOWN – (2nd – 16-1) here I go again with my cliff horse! However, he has run really well of late and this mile wihich will be run quickly should suit and 25-1 on his Royal Ascot form is huge in my opinion.
HANOVERIAN BARON 1530 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) another horse who was in top form before Ascot and he never got close there. Prior to that his run at York when just pipped by SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD is decent form. The ground should suit and he now has an extra five pounds in hand with OPINION and that doesn't take into account his riders claim. Could run a huge race at a big price.
TWEETIE PIE 1505 BEVERLEY – (WON – 50-1) wasn't that impressive on debut but I follow Declan Carroll alot and he can get a horse flying on these courses in Yorkshire and this one with a run under its belt should improve, again a massive price in my opinion.
If you're having a flutter today, good luck and remember to bet within your means. Enjoy the sun and the racing.

Royal Ascot Day 4

Well so far this week has been a disaster for me! The closest I have got is second and a couple of thirds. That however I suppose is Royal Ascot – tough, competitive handicaps and quality Group races where a whole host of horses can win. On I go to Friday in search of a winner!
I have had a look and selected three that I fancy at Ascot and one elsewhere.
GLEN COUNTESS 1720 MARKET RASEN (nap) – (WON – 8-1) this horse needs to improve again to take this but I think she can. She has solid form at this level and can go in again on this ground. If the forecast rain comes and gets in, she is proven on softer surfaces too.
MAUREEN 1545 ASCOT (nb) – (unplaced) the forgotten horse!I have always rated this horse and while she didn't run to what I believe is her class in both Guineas, she cannt be discounted from this. If the forecast rain comes I think it will help her chances too. I think she will run a big race!
LABARINTO 1625 ASCOT (treble) – (unplaced) this boy is enigmatic to say the least! Can be hugely talented on his day as he showed at Sandown last year. He went well fresh that day, one of the reasons I like his chances in this. Secondly, his owner has stuck with him, there aren't many Abdullah horses at 5, who are gelded and still his. On a decent mark too considering that Sandown success.
ES QUE LOVE 1735 ASCOT – (unplaced) Cliff horse or what! However, I thought he ran really well in the Hunt Cup and got going in the last furlong and a half. He's on the same mark and turned out quickly again with the same jockey. The drop in trip will help and I think he has a great chance of place money at least. And I have tunnel vision with this horse!!!
