Glorious Goodwood Day One

So I thought it was time to end my blog sabatical and go again with the awesome summer spectacle – Goodwood. Although based on the ground we may get quite a few withdrawals and races not being as competitive, we will have to wait and see. A certain Mr Johnston has hit form right before his favourite week so he should be worth a follow. I will try and get a blog up for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, although I'm off on my jollies on Thursday. I'm sure we're in for a cracking few days anyway. As I'm sure you are aware I am part of a fantastic syndicate that own a few horses now, Teamchoochoo. We're currently seeking to expand the syndicate and have some very nice horses at really competitive prices. Please check out our website for more information, or contact me via Twitter. The website is www.teamchoochoo.co.uk

So on to my selections :

VOICE OF A LEADER 1400 GOODWOOD
I've watched this fella twice this year and was expecting better of him but he has just not quite got competitive. He was in with a shout at York but was then eased and interestingly the handicapper has left him on a mark of OR97, suggesting he thinks he's still got a bit of class. He was quite eye catching in the race before this staying on well behind MAHSOOB and I think this quicker track will help him in the final furlong or two. I'm also interesting in how BURANO runs off a feather weight, and Amanda Perrett is one to watch at this meeting. A cracking race with FIRE FIGHTING bidding to go out from the front no doubt but giving his nearest rival 8lbs could be just too much. FORGOTTEN HERO won well at HQ a few runs ago and caught the eye staying on again in the same race at York. Spencer who loves a hold up horse could come late on him.

STRONG CHALLENGE 1435 GOODWOOD
This is a cracking race and you could opt for a few of these. It's a shame AIR VICE MARSHAL is out as it would be a fascinating renewal between him and BIRCHWOOD. The latter ran well last time but has a blot on softer ground and that may be what catches him out this time. My selection won well on the course and the extra furlong should help bring out more improvement. The second in his last race has since gone out and won three times, the last being a Group 2 in France. It's interesting therefore that the same ownership send GALILEO GOLD here too, having won an ordinary race last time. Both him and IBN MALIK could be real improvers.

TOORMORE 1510 GOODWOOD (nap)
I found it interesting that Godolphin bought this one and despite a disappointing show behind SOLOW he still retains some ability despite him not getting his nose infront for over two years, and that was beating THE GREY GATSBY. The ground should be ok for him and in this lesser company he must have a cracking chance, it looks like the race may cut up a bit too with the withdrawal of LIMATO AND GLORY AWAITS. ASCRIPTION ran well last time behind CABLE BAY and AEOLUS was impressive too but they've both been hiked in the ratings and will need to improve again to win this whereas my boy shouldn't.

NOTARISED 1545 GOODWOOD
This fella was a great winner for me the other week in the Old Newton Cup staying on gamely to beat his stablemate WATERSMEEET and despite his 7lnbs rise in the weights he should have more to come. The extra two furlongs on this track should help him to motor on a bit to, rather than struggle up a finish. BATTERSEA was favourite that day and didnt show and I cant see any reason to reverse the form but I do think top weight ASTRONEREUS is the main danger. His defeat of DASHING STAR at York was impressive and he could go in again.

PERFECT MUSE 1620 GOODWOOD
I really fancied this fella in the Epsom Dash but he never go in it depsite going off favourite. He is 3lbs lower today off a mark of OR86, only a pound higher than when a good second at Pontefract on soft ground. Which leads me to think the cut in the ground will really help his chances tomorrow and with Hanagan on board I like him even more..

GOODWOOD ZODIAC 1655 GOODWOOD
A whole host of chances here and I'm opting for this one due to him handling Epsom rather well last time. That should help his chances here.

IFWECAN 1730 GOODWOOD
Another Johnston horse for me. He has carried a big weight like this before over the distance and run well and will appreciate a bit of cut or if the ground dries a little. He's a game horse and will kick on from a way out and he may be hard to peg back, he's got quite an appealing mark too.

So I return to the blog after a week off. Last week I ventured to Donny races for their evening meet followed by The Human League in concert afterwards. It was a great day all round with three winners and a good time had by all! Sunday was a different matter however! I had the worst hangover I have had in a long time! On to the horses, my dad has got off to a flying start and he had four very profitable selections a few weeks ago, as for me, enough said at the minute! I struggled to pick my nose last time! As always I'm realistic, sometimes you win, alot of the time you lose!! I'm always prepared to celebrate the successes and lick my wounds in defeat! Hopefully I will have a change of luck today. Good luck to you all whatever you're on!

HOT STREAK 1545 HAYDOCK (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Won this last year off a 4lb higher mark. The surface is key for him and with a bit of cut in the ground he will be hard to peg back. His win as a three year old in this last year shouldn't be underestimated and with a solid return last time he is set up ready to roll. I expect a huge run today, lump on! My old mate KINGSGATE NATIVE ran a cracker last time behind his stablemate and he will be thereabouts again. He's worth a saver!

POOLE HARBOUR 1500 CATTERICK (nb) (unplaced = -£5.00)
Had a nightmare season last year with Dandy Nicholls, and he comes with risks attached. He really interests me on his first run for Karl Burke on ground he will love. He is running off a mark of OR80, which he has won off before, and was running off a mark of OR95 last year, so he has an attractive mark for me. He's drawn near some pace and is a big price for this class of handicap. I just hope he returns to his old form, if he does he could walk this.

MY DREAM BOAT 1455 GOODWOOD (treble) (unplaced = -£5.00)
I picked this horse last week at Donny. He's well bred for better ground and he absolutely hosed up. There was definitely more in the tank and despite a 8lb rise in his mark to OR84 he looked very good last week and there should be more improvement. My only reservation as my good friend @Pirate_B pointed out is that the jockey has yet to win for this trainer! I'm optimistic though and hope that what I saw last week was a decent horse on the upgrade.

GO DAN GO 1435 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
This guy is really progressing quickly and I know he has to step up again but he is capable of it I think, especially on this softer surface. He has been running well all year and his success at Beverley was franked yesterday will the second going in. It's a big step up but his trainer is getting more talented and becoming very shrewd at placing his horses! A definite big each way shout.

My Dad's selections are:
Gabrial's King 1400 Haydock (Unplaced = -£5.00)
Mutarakez 1435 Haydock (Won 2-1 = £6.25)
Lastuce 1510 Haydock (unplaced = -£5.00)
Hot Streak 1545 Haydock (unplaced= -£5.00)

Standings
Father 2-1 Son
Profit
Father £34.02
Son – £36.25

A couple of extras I like today are –
SECRET WITNESS 1640 GOODWOOD
ALBERT BRIDGE 1400 HAYDOCK

and @Pirate_B likes the look of RED CHARMER 1700 Beverley!

Haydock and The Temple of Doom

Here we go again with a monster scoop 6! Lets hope it goes today, and I hope it goes to a £2 line or a small syndicate of 'normal' people and not the rich guys who have put thousands on to bet. Not had chance to do a Saturday blog for a while. My selections are below and I've got my daughter to select a scoop 6 too!

POWERFUL PRESENCE 1525 CATTERICK (nap) – (2nd – 12-1 = £7.50) this horse ran well at Ripon. On his first start and I fully expected him to win next time out but he disappointed. He returns here in a lower class race and his record is impressive here 1211.

BIG BREAK 1555 CURRAGH (nb) – (unplaced = -£5.00) she has a few decent runs on softer ground and the stable are in good fettle at the moment. She could be a horse to follow this year and I'm hopeful of a big run!

MIDTERM BREAK 1540 BEVERLEY (treble) – (WON – 11-4 = £8.59) followed up a good second to ROUDEE at Roipon with a good win at Southwell. Comes here in good form and really fancy his chances

SHORE STEP 1405 HAYDOCK – (2nd – 12-1 = £7.50) I always try to find a decent priced handicap horse and I think I've found it for today. This horse has won on better ground than this but also has run on good ground. Im hopeful the softer ground won't be an issue. He ran CAPO ROSSO close last year at Warwick and then followed that up with a success. CAPO ROSSO won again last weekend and this horse could have more in the tank!

My daughter's scoop6!
Leg 1 – BEAR BEHIND WON!
Leg 2 – SHOWBOATING
Leg 3 – LADY FRANCES
Leg 4 – MARCH
Leg 5 – SOLAR SPIRIT
Leg 6 – RED STARGAZER

Here are my Dad's selections
GO FAR 1405 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
HOT STREAK 1440 HAYDOCK (WON 9-4 = £7.03)
JOYEUSE 1510 HAYDOCK (WON 3-1 = £9.37)
FIRST FLIGHT 1545 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)

Current standings : FATHER 7-10 SON
PROFIT – SON = £141.26 FATHER £68.81

Ebor Day at York

Not much luck yesterday with the selections, but I did think Kingsgate Native ran well on ground not ideal! I'm writing my blog today sat on a lovely caravan site just outside Matlock. The issue is the bloody weather, yep, it's been throwing it down here all morning and last night too! We had planned a big family BBQ aswell to celebrate my niece doing so well in her GCSE's. Oh well, we can't control the weather and it's seriously affected the horses at York. Below are my selections for today, good luck if you're having a flutter!

HANOVERIAN BARON 1550 YORK (nap) – (unplaced) he was due to run yesterday but sneaks in here off bottom weight. He has been running very well all year and was travelling really well at Haydock before being hampered slightly. Was doing his best work at the end and this step up in trip should suit. The claimer takes another 5lbs off and in the forecast rain-soaked ground it could prove crucial. Each way selection though.

VALBCHEK 1555 NEWMARKET (nb) – (unplaced) ran a cracking race on his belated return and has a fair bit of ability. TAAYEL defeated him that day but I reckon he will ge loads better after the run, big chance.

LANCELOT DU LAC 1630 NEWMARKET (treble) – (WON – 3-1) ran eyecatchingly well last time over 7f and just faded up the hill towards the finish. The drop back to 6f should suit and the rain should help too. Big run expected from me today.

PYTHAGOREAN 1455 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) has been running consistently well and has wins on fast and good ground. The rain I don't think has affected the ground at Goodwood as much and this fella has a good chance at this trip today.

MIDNITE ANGEL 1420 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) another horse running really well and has the ability to go in. She has decent form through her narrow defeat to J Wonder, although it was let down at York earlier. She holds Amazing Maria through that form and should win today.

SIRIUS PROSPECT 1405 YORK – (WON – 5-2) finally got his nose back infront over course and distance in July and never got competitive at Glorious Goodwood from a poor draw. I'm hoping he can bounce back again as he has some serious form from a few years back.

ELIDOR 1440 YORK – (unplaced) I really rate Martin Harley as a jockey, but last time on this horse he got it wrong and never got him in the race. He will stay this trip I have no doubt and the jockey will make up for his last error today and get him competitive earlier on. He was a Royal Ascot winner don't forget and I think he will take this today over an extended distance.

WILSHIRE BOULEVARD 1515 YORK – (2nd – 4-1) won last time out after finding 5f too sharp at Royal Ascot, plus it was on the back of a success just a few days prior and it may have come too soon. He should appreciate the ground today and he looks like an improving horse.

Glorious Goodwood Saturday

Not much look yesterday! Only MONTIRIDGE winning and a place for CAPE PERON. On to an even more difficult Saturday fixture with some cracking handicaps. I really love this big fields and trying to solve the problem, hopefully have picked a few today. Good luck if you're having a bet.

TROJAN ROCKET 1715 NEWMARKET (nap) – (unplaced) this boy needs to step up again but judging on his last run behind Baby Strange at Newcastle he can do. He was unlucky that day as didn't get the gap when needed. Mlikael Barzalona has a cracking record on him and I think he has a great chance today.

VALBCHEK 1720 DONCASTER (nb) – (2nd – 8-1) he was very smart last term at times and has some solid form to bring to the table. He is back from a long break but they have been waiting for the ground to be easier. Massive chance today.

BABY STRANGE 1405 GOODWOOD (treble) – (unplaced) has been raised 6lbs for his success at Newcastle. However, he is one to follow when in form and he has a cracking record in this, taking it in 2008 and he flew home at the finish last year, really good each way chance.

BLAINE 1550 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) is thrown in to his first handicap and is a huge price. He won the Gimcrack at York in a stella start to his career, he has since been disappointing, but class is class and he could be better than these, and interestingly is entered in another Group 1 later on. Great each way value too. I've fought with my heartstrings and decided to leave WHOZTHECAT alone in this. He's ran incredibly well this year but it's maye asking too much for him towin this from the front under a penalty. I kind of hope I'm wrong though!

JUST THE JUDGE 1515 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) she ran really well I thought from a difficult stall at the Royal meeting and she should relish this step up in trip. I think she will reverse the form with Sky Lantern today, whom I'm not sure will stay.

ELIDOR 1440 GOODWOOD – (unplaced) has been raised 5lbs since his last victory and the form of that race has been franked by CAP O'RUSHES and Bold Sniper since, great chance to take this too.

LANCELOT DU LAC 1420 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) this is an easier race than he's been running well in and he looked a smart proposition when winning first time out. The yard is bang in form and he should win this.

NO POPPY 1615 THIRSK – (unplaced) quickly becoming a cliff horse, but she has been well tried this year and I firmly believe she's a decent horse. She's even better with a bit of give and I'm hoping the thunderstorms and showers have got into the ground for her!

Glorious Goodwood Day 4

Brown Panther ensured Day 3 was a good one for me with success in the Goodwood Cup. I was pretty sure the extra disance would suit and he proved me right, he could now turn into a serious cup horse. The nap AUSSIE REIGNS also ran a belter taking a dead heat for second at a huge 25-1. Let's hope Friday is better still.

KINGSGATE NATIVE 1515 GOODWOOD (nap) – he has been a much better horse this year and after a disappointing run at the Royal meeting he ran well in defeat to Tickled Pink last time. He's got a 4lb penalty to contend with but on his day would make mincemeat of these. More importantly for me he has course form too, winning this in 2009 and he also has a place to his name. His is back to his very best and I'm hopeful of another big run.

CAPE PERON 1445 GOODWOOD (nb) – he was and has been very impressive so far, no more so than when waltzing away with victory at Doncaster. He ran well in the Britannia, but that is a race that takes some winning. I think he is a better horse than this level and must have more to come, the slightly easier ground should help too.

MASTERSTROKE 1355 GOODWOOD (treble) – any horse bringing an Arc third into any race demands respect. This is a group 3 and on paper he should trounce this lot. The only negative to me is that it is his seasonal debut, but class is class.

MONTIRIDGE 1430 GOODWOOD – this fella has improved in every run and followed up an unlucky second in the Jersey Stakes with a Listed win last time. Another to add to the list of Hannon/Hughes winners this week

NARGYS 1650 GOODWOOD – this horse is a quandry. She was heading towards one of the favourites in the 1000 Guineas before he flop in her trial race. She then ran an absolte cracker at Royal Ascot and was flying at the end, then we had Sandown and poor again. I really think she is a class filly and think the galloping track will suit her, she could show her true colours at last!

Also I have a couple of eyecatchers elsewhere on the day. I put MAYOMAN 1950 MUSSELBURGH in my book after a good run at Newcastle last time. He has run against some top horses in his past is back down to a winning mark. I also like CLASSICAL DIVA 1530 THIRSK – she's a half sister to Mayoman and was pitched in at the deepend for her handicap debut, this is a more suitable challenge and she could bounce back.

Glorious Goodwood Day 3

The revenge on the downs was the result of yesterday with Richard Hughes giving Toronado a peach of a ride. With that winner, I also had places for Excess Knowledge, who was very unlucky, and looks a good St Leger prospect. I also had a place with Parbold, who took an age to get going! On to today and my nap is the repeat of Tuesday, with the better ground after a drying out spell, I hope he runs today!

AUSSIE REIGNS 1415 GOODWOOD (nap) – this horse has been running so consistently this year over a mile. He ran very flat last time and I'm willing to discount that. He has won here before at last year's festival and whilst this is a step up on previous victories I think he has a race like this in him. The extra distance is interesting, and to see him entered so soon after a withdrawal makes me think he's ready to go in.

JALLOTA 1445 GOODWOOD (nb) – is ultra consistent and deserves a race like this. He has pretty decent form and a reproduction of his third in the July Stakes will see him go close here.

BROWN PANTHER 1515 GOODWOOD (treble) – I love is horse and he ran really well to take his return race at Pontefract. He should really enjoy the extended trip and has the speed to burn his rivals off in the closing stages.

Glorious Goodwood Day 2

Well Day 1 didnt set the world alight for me with only LABARINTO (12-1) getting a place. Was gutted my nap AUSSIE REIGNS was a non-runner as I thought he had a great chance. Never mind, I live to fight another day and what a cracking day it is. Some trappy looking handicaps and of course the rematch in the Sussex Stakes, combined with a cole of decent group races. If you're having a bet, good luck!

JOHNNY CASTLE 1725 GOODWOOD (nap) – this fella has dropped back to a reasonable mark, only a pound higher than when he defeated SIRIUS PROSPECT on good to soft ground over this distance a couple of years ago. He has got a great draw and Amanda Perrett normally has a winner or two at the meeting. He ticks the boxes with his mark, distance and ground. Damn good chance to recapture old form. I'm also having an each way squeak on MR DAVID in this race, he is another one whose mark has reduced and he could have a good each way sniff with a trainer/jockey combo that have a great strike rate.

TORONADO 1505 GOODWOOD (nb) – I'm not going to desert this boy now. He may well have pipped DAWN APPROACH without interference last time, but who knows. Today he has the ground in his favour, a bit more cut will suit him perfectly and he will finally defeat his nemesis. Aiden O'Brien's horse is the danger I reckon back over a mile with some pretty top class form in his book.

ITALIAN RIVIERA 1355 GOODWOOD (treble) – this horse has been progressing nicely up until a narrow defeat last time when I think the jockey lost his whip or irons. Sir Mark Prescott is on form at the moment and this horse has followed a similar path to a previous winner of this race for him, KEY TIME, he won this off 81 a few years ago and my selection, off 80, should relish the extra distance.

EXCESS KNOWLEDGE 1430 GOODWOOD – he simply has the best form on the book, particularly when third behind JUST THE JUDGE last season at Newbury. His belated appearance behind MANDOUR was a good run and the ground will help today and his pedigree suggests this trip should suit too.

PARBOLD 1540 GOODWOOD – he won on soft on his debut at York and then was defeated by WAR COMMANDER in the Coventry. The step up to 7f should suit and despite Richard Fahey having a poor record with 2y olds in Group races I still see him as the best horse today.

SAUCY MINX 1650 GOODWOOD – is two from two at the track. This is a massive stat as I think this course takes some getting used to. He then ran second over a mle last time out and this extra furlong should bring out more improvement. The first part of an Amanda Perrett double!
