Newbury and Kelso

The ups and downs of the festival has slowly seeped out of systems by now I'm sure. Recharged and ready for the next adventure, firstly the flat begins next week with the Lincoln, then it's all stations go for the Crabbies Grand National. Before all that I'm getting ready for a short stint in St Helens next week on a course and then we're off to EuroDisney next Sunday – can't wait for that! I'm hoping the change in the ground will bring out the best of a few of my selections today. Only time will tell – good luck today whatever you're on and I hope you have a good shout.

The #twittergamble guys have gone for the following this week, they consistently get one winner between them, I'm sure the big one is coming soon!
@Tonythetyke –
@LiamKenniford – VILLAGE VIC 1655 NEWBURY
@Fernando_RFC2 – HANNAH'S PRINCESS 1435 NEWBURY
@DazGilbert1 – THORNTON ALICE 1725 FONTWELL

My selections are :
MICKIE 1535 BANGOR (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
She has been running consistently well in chases this year, running well behind the likes of SEGO SUCCESS and HIGHLAND RETREAT. Last time she was quite a way behind GLEN'S MELODY at Warwick in a Listed contest. She drops to a class 3 today and I think she will manage to carry the big weight and she clearly has the best chance today she's had for a while. She's always been better over hurdles in my opinion and she's back on her last winng mark today!

TARA MIST 1435 NEWBURY (nb) (4th – 15-2 = £4.68)
I'm going for a nap and nb double for connections today! I think the good ground will help my selection eek some more improvement out today. She has assured stamina and you need that on this galloping track at the pace thiswill be run at. She was half a length behind AS DE MEE last time at Leicester on heavy ground; that one has since franked the form well when winning a couple of weeks ago and she has to have a great chance today. This is a very competitive race though and lots have chances, I also like BRIERY BELLE and TWENTYTWOSTAKEN in this.

PERSIAN SNOW 1400 NEWBURY (treble) (unplaced = -£5.00)
This one has bedn struggling a little since a very good run behind JOHN'S SPIRIT on his first run over the distance earlier in the year. He is back on the same mark as that run today and this is a much easier contest thatn he's been running in recently. My old favourite REBEL REBELLION has another good chance but I think he may need the ground softer over a distance like this.

IMPERIAL CIRCUS 1510 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)
The ground is absolutely key for this fella. Although he is only 1 from 17 in chasing I reckon he has the best chance for a while to make that 2 today. In his youth he beat ROLLING ACES and he looked half decent over hurdles as a juvenile. I went to the Hobbs yard the other summer and met this guy, he was a character!! Lately he has run behind the likes of WHAT A WARRIOR, MON PARRAIN and SIRE COLLONGES on good ground. This distance today is probably his best too. Hopefully we'll see him improve today.

My Dad's selections are:
FINANCIAL CLIMATE 1510 NEWBURY (3rd – 4-1 = £2.50)
PEPITE ROSE 1400 NEWBURY (2nd – 7-2 = £2.18)
RONS DREAM 1435 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)
UPTENDOWNONE 1505 FAKENHAM (unplaced = -£5.00)

Badger Ales and Doncaster

Last Saturday brought a bit of luck back to the blog with TIDAL BAY and ROLLING ACES winning and the best three treble was nearly completed but CHRIS PEA GREEN was just foiled! What a performance we got again from Tidal Bay, he is such as class horse and to do it at his age, simply brilliant! I'm gearing up for Cheltenham next week and can't wait. If you're having a flutter today good luck and hopefully I can find one or two here!

ETON RIFLES 1425 DONCASTER (nap) – won this last year and comes here on the back of an eye catching reappearance at Ascot. He is back to his preferred 6f today on ground he will love. He is also getting 6lbs off JACK DEXTER in the race and that will prevent the gallant horse beating my tip.

COTTON MILL 1405 WINCANTON (nb) – this boy is smart and he showed that when being close to My Tent Or Yours on his reappearance at Newbury last year. Forget after that as he never played ball! The year before he was cruising upsides SIMONSIG at the festival before going through the side of a hurdle. He has a big chance in this today.

PANTXOA 1440 WINCANTON (treble) – this horse has just got better and better and is up to this level in my opinion. The pace of the race will suit as he stays on at the end, as will the track with the long run in. POUNGACH is the danger if he jumps better.

SWNYMOR 1535 DONCASTER – looked a class hurdler before falling last year at the last on his debut. Things then never worked out, including on his stable debut. He has some good form on soft ground on the level and I find it interesting that they opt for this rather than his engagement at Wincanton. The ground is obviously key. Smart each way chance!

JABHAAT 1500 DONCASTER – has some interesting form, notibly behind THOMAS HOBSON earlier this season, was then runner up in the race after that and comes here with a live chance. The ground is my worry, but if she handles it she has a good each way chance.

SWIFTLY DONE 1350 DONCASTER – ran well when fourth last week. Interestingly has never won over a mile but he was just getting going when prevented a run in the final furlong last week. Will love the ground again and is on the same mark, chance!

TIME FOR SPRING 1540 SANDOWN – won this last year and comes here on the same mark. He has a record of two wins from three here and must go well.

YOUNG SPARKY 1525 KELSO – I have followed this horse since he first ran and he didnt quite perform in two handicaps last year but is now put back in that sphere in a lower class and I have to stick with him!

Monday selections

YOU KNOW YOURSELF 1540 KELSO (nap) – (WON – 100-30) ran really well in defeat last time out when returning to his last winning mark. With the trip and ground in his favour I'm hoping he wins this.

PEMBROKE 1810 WINDSOR (nb) – (unplaced) cost quite a bit as a yearling and is well bred, being related to the awesome Canford Cliffs. Could be an interesting contender on his debut.

KEEP KICKING 1520 WOLVES (treble) – (unplaced) has produced three decent runs so far since winning a jumpers bumper. A pretty decent handicap mark and he has a good chance here at a decent price.

Monday selections

Not a good day on the blog on Sunday with only the nb CONQUISTO running to a place. Not a good day for Ryan Mania either, 24 hours after the biggest day of his life he is air-lifted to hospital. The reports I read as I was writing this suggested he got a kick in between the shoulders and it wasn't anything too serious. I hope this is the case. It just shows you what a rollercoaster career being a NH jockey can be.

Here are my selections for Monday :

BOGSIDE 1430 KELSO (nap) – (unplaced) has won 2 out of 3 hurdles here and will appreciate the change back to hurdles after average performances over the bigger obstacles. He's 7lb lower in the ratings than his last win here and he is the class horse in the race.

KAI BROON 1530 KELSO (nb) – (3rd – 6-1) he won this last year and is another one who is a bit of a course horse. He is 8lb lower than last year and this is the time of year he generally wins.

THANE OF CAWDOR 1710 WOLVES (treble) – (3rd – 7-2) finally got off the mark last time when the increase in trip seemed to do the trick. He's up 4lbs for that but that is doable and he should be thereabouts again.

BLOG STATS :

Naps 34/152 = 22.3%
Wins 141/773 = 18.2%
Placed 208/773 = 26.9%

November Handicap

So here we are, the final flat meeting of another season. What a season it has been too, we have been treated to the fabulous Frankel, an attempt at the Triple Crown with Camelot and a seven win streak in a meeting by Richard Hughes. Hughsie wins the Jockey's title for the first time and deservedly so. Who also can begrudge John Gosden being crowned champion trainer after his impressive season.

Now we move to the jump season, and whilst I really enjoy the flat I really love the jumpers! The form is a little more consistent and there are some fantastic handicaps to look forward to. Today is also my birthday so I'm hoping my tips get me a couple of winners today. I was really stuck between three today for my nap. I really give my best three great chances of success today!

Baby Mix 1450 Wincanton (nap) -(unplaced) is a really classy horse but struggled giving weight to Dodging Bullets at Cheltenham last time. He doesn't seem to perform there either and this track may suit him similar to his success at Kempton last year when he destroyed them.

Diamond Harry 1525 Wincanton (nb) – (PU) this one has all the class in the race and has been dropped something like 16lb for a couple of disappointing runs. He goes well fresh and my only worry is whether he is back to his old self.

Eton Rifles 1510 Doncaster (treble) – (WON 7-1) has ran back into form recently and whilst he is a soft ground horse today's conditions should suit him well. He ran well in defeat last time and I reckon today is the day he will win.

As well as my top three these are the others I fancy today.

Tony Star 1415 Wincanton (4th)
Cubanita 1400 Doncaster (WON 8-1)
Kirthill 1435 Doncaster (unplaced)
Irish Heartbeat 1545 Doncaster (unplaced)
Imperial Circus 1535 Sandown (2nd 5-1)
Merigo 1405 Kelso (unplaced)
Thanks for Coming 1320 Sandown (2nd 11-2)
Chasers Chance 1310 Wincanton (unplaced)
Kartanian 1500 Sandown (unplaced)

Good luck everyone and remember to bet within your means.

Sunday and a Spark

Not too bad a day on the blog again on Saturday. A winning nap courtesy of GABRIAL (9-2) who looked pretty impressive if you can steer him that is! A couple of places also helped keep my overall percentages up. One fellow horse man had another blinding day. Martin regularly does a blog that indentifies horses that are his ‘pointers’ due to form, ground, distance etc. Today 5 out of 6 of the races he covered had the winner in his blog. Check out his pointers here, you will need to follow him on twitter though and ask for his password. Well worth a read! The photo above is courtesy of him too. Cheers Martin!
YOUNG SPARKY 1415 KELSO – (nap) (unplaced) has ran twice at Hexham and ran ok on his debut yet fell on his next outing there. I’m hopeful that the better ground will suit him and with keen running types such as MAKBULLET and KEENESLAND it may set up the race for him.
ROCKABILLY 1550 KELSO – (nb) (unplaced) his record on good ground reads 131 and he was moving very well and into contention when he fell last time. Confident he will bolt in.
MRS PEACOCK 1425 FAKENHAM – (treble) (3rd -7-1) has won three times on good ground including this distance in March. Soft ground didn’t suit last time, the better surface should help him here.
I’m also going to have a little each way on SAMITAR 1540 CURRAGH, (WON – 12-1) with a short priced favourite he is a decent price at 20-1.

Wednesday – Kempton/Kelso

Wednesday’s Tips
Kempton and Kelso

I had a break from blogging on Tuesday. One reason only, I went out to watch the Manchester derby! I ended up drownng my sorrows after a poor display from the Reds! Oh well, we move on and Newcastle will turn City over anyway.

So, on to racing and Wednesday’s tips. Firstly a big well done to all concerned for re-scheduling the Ascot card. Here are my best three on Wednesday.

KING TORUS 1510 KEMPTON – (nap) (unplaced) won a Listed race last September and the followed up on soft on his last racecourse visit. Has a bit of work to do here, but the Hannon magic may well have rubbed off. I’m confident he can bridge the gap! (4 point win)

THIMAAR 1545 KEMPTON – (nb) (3rd – 5-2) you couldn’t be anything but impressed with his win a Kempton. Surely more to come, and the runner up that day GULF OF NAPLES scored well at Ripon last Saturday. (3 point win)

NIGHT IN MILAN 1930 KELSO – (treble) (unplaced) didn’t stay last time out over 3m 6f, prior to that gave two good accounts over the bigger obstacles. A drop back to a preferred trip will help him bounce back. (3 point win)
