Sunday

Doncaster was a cracking day yesterday, but I only got a little bit back with TULLIUS coming second. There are a few decent races today and a few horses I fancy. Here’s a little Sunday blog.

GASSIN GOLF 1400 ASCOT (NAP) – ran a cracking race when second in the Imperial Cup and the ground is most certainly key for him. A reproduction of that on this ground will see him take this.

AALIM 1500 ASCOT (NB) – won comfortably twice at Catterick on soft ground, blinkers applied today to sharpen him up a bit more. Good chance.

AHYAKNOWYERSELF (TREBLE) – ran a cracking race at the Festival over a distance that is a bit far for him. Returns to 17f today and on good ground can reproduce his previous smart form, has to have another good chance today.

I’m also going to have a little flutter on the old boy GAUVAIN 1610 ASCOT who has a race like this in him and has dropped down the weights.

Doncaster has another cracking card and there are several horses that I fancy to run well there today at bog prices so I have done a little each way Lucky 15 on :

2013 – The Bandit’s review

I figured as it was the last day of the year that I should look back on my blogging exploits of 2013. Firstly can I say a huge thank you for all you guys and gals that take time to read my blog every week. I really enjoy sharing my views on a sport we all love and I've really enjoyed interacting with some of you over Twitter this past year. I've been able to join #Teamchoochoo and get a share in a race horse! Cheers @ianmallard. I've also had over 11,000 views of the blog this year – awesome stuff. Another big thank you to those of you who RT the blog on Twitter.

So here are my blogging highlights this past year!

HOLYWELL

I tracked this horse all last season and knew it had a big race in it! I mentioned it as one of my strongest bets at Cheltenham of the week here. He only went and obliged at 25-1 – I napped him that day and it was great to get some responses on twitter from people who had read my piece and thought they would have a go too. Cheltenham was quite a good festival for the blog as I also had BACK IN FOCUS, LORD WINDERMERE, CHAMPAGNE FEVER, HURRICANE FLY, AT FISHERS CROSS AND BOBS WORTH that won for me. Took some money off the bookies that week.

OPENING BATSMAN

I napped this fella on the blog just before Cheltenham when he beat Rolling Aces at Kempton. Was great to as thr race panned out just like I thought and I also had a top treble that day with my nb IRISH SAINT and my treble horse GRANDIOSO also landing. Read the blog here

PACHA DU POLDER

My form was pretty hot in and around this time and I napped this horse at Newbury. It was always rated highly by Paul Nicholls but never seemed to get his ground. It did this day at romped in at 18-1. Another huge winning nap! Read the blog here

TIDAL BAY

I have mention this old boy! He's my favourite horse in training and what a year it has been for him, his Lexus techincally came in 2012 but what a turnaround Paul Nicholls has made with this horse! It makes you wonder what he could have achieved had he been there all his career and how poor Howard Johnson really was! His performance in the Hennessey giving Bob's Worth 6lbs and only just being beaten was ace and also what a brave fight he gave in the Welsh National just last week. He for me is already a National Hunt legend!

That was the end of the jumps season really except for the Aintree festival, this always seems to elude me and I never quite get the winners there! I'm still waiting for a National winner too – getting a bit like AP did before his success – just cant seem to pick the winner! Tidal Bay this year? Who knows!

I'm not as good on the flat with my selections as I seem to be over the jumps and to be fair I love the jumps more! The flat season revolved around these blog highlights for me

KINGSGATE NATIVE

An old favourite of mine and I put him up on the blog to win the Temple Stakes at Haydock and he obliged at 14-1 that day.

DECLAN CARROLL

Now Mr Carroll is a northern trainer I've followed for a few years and he is good to watch around York, Catterick and Beverley. Particularly with sprinters on their first or second run. Last year he sent out LASTCHANCELUCAS to win at 100-1 at York. This year I selected TWEETY PIE of his on the blog and it romped in at 66-1! Keep your eye on him, he sends a few big priced winners out every year. Read the Tweet Pie blog here

We of course cant forget the passing of one of the greatest horsemen of all time in Sir Henry Cecil. What a man he was – a privelege to have seen him train. We were also treated the the likes of TORONADO, DAWN APPROACH, DANK, and of course the blistering display from TREVE in the Arc.

It's been quite a year and I've loved every minute of it, I look forward to blogging more this year and maybe sharing a few more winners with you.

The Cambridgeshire

Not long now until the 'Rematch', who will conquer who this time?………. More next week on this.

On to today one of the most competitive and exciting handicaps hits us, The Cambridgeshire! If you find the winner of this you're a good man, or your lucky pin did well. Some other cracking races to look forward to, including another rematch of the fillies, plus some damn good jumping action.

Enjoy the racing and good luck if you're having a flutter!

GRANDAD'S HORSE 1450 MARKET RASEN (nap) – (unplaced) this horse should run a cracker today. He will relish the ground and won well here on his chase debut earlier in the summer. That day he defeated PANTXOA, who has gone on to frank the form twice with impressive wins. My guy looks appealing off a mark of 137 and could have a big season ahead.

MONT RAS 1750 HAYDOCK (nb) – (unplaced) won well for me on this blog when winning at 25-1 at York from the front. Has been raised 5lbs since but that won't stop him on ground he will love and with a course record that reads 1112. Another great chance today.

ELSAFEER 1630 MARKET RASEN (treble) – (3rd – 17-2) has been off the track for ages but is a talented horse. He has been dropped back to a previous winning mark and with COOL BARANACA lumping a penalty today I think my selection will win this easily.

JUST THE JUDGE 1510 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) I'm definitely laying SKY LANTERN here (idiot!!), she won't reverse the form with ELUSIVE KATE on this ground. However, I think my selection will defeat them both. She has always been high class and the last run was so bad it should be ignored. She is dropped back to a mile and I think the first two will take each other on too early and my girl will swoop late, that's if Frank doesn't give her too much to do!!!

SAM SHARP 1550 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) what a race this is! If you pick the winner of this you have done a hell of a job, or your pin is very lucky! I've got this down to two. Firstly, THA'IR has his ground and runs off a very appealing mark considering his exploits as a 2 y o. My only doubt is the very low draw. My selection is also low, but I love how progressive this horse has been this year and the way he defeated SENNOCKIAN STAR at York was impressive, as was his run behind SNOWBOARDER prior to that. TRES CORONAS has a sniff, but this might be too short and the connections of ASCRIPTION must be gutted that no rain has fallen this week.

LASTCHANCELUCAS 1430 CHESTER – (unplaced) has the softer ground in his favour and a return to 6f will help, as will the drop to a mark of 84. As always her the draw is key, mine needs to overcome that but has a great chance.

BEAR BEHIND 1530 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) this horse hasn't quite lived up to the standards he set last year when winning off 97 ( then disqualified ) againsy HAMISH MCGONAGALL. Is now back to a mark of 98 and has been overlooked with more focus on his stablemate. He has form on this ground and will be a huge price.

O CROTAIGH 1520 MARKET RASEN – (2nd – 7-2) loves it here and ran well earlier in the year here. He has now dropped to an appealing mark and will run well off it at this distance and class.

Saturday selections

What a feast of racing there is on offer today. With some fantastic horses competing in Group races and tough handicaps, and all this with York's Ebor meeting on the horizon! We're certainly in for a treat or two over the upcoming week. Enjoy the racing today and good luck if you are having a bet, hopefully I can find a few winners and the Saturday nap again!

LASTCHANCELUCAS 1545 CHESTER (nap) – (2nd – 4-1) really caught the eye last time out when finishing a very close sixth at Pontefract, despite running wide and being hampered in running. That run was much more like what he is capable of and will have more chance if the forecast rain falls too. Really confident about this ones chances today.

SECRETINTHEPARK 1455 NEWMARKET (nb) – (2nd – 13-2) won well here earlier in the season and looked a decent animal. Looked back to that level when third here last time. Today he is much better off in the weights than he was with the two infront of him last time, and that could prove pivotal.

MAGLIETTA FINA 1420 NEWMARKET (treble) – (unplaced) has some decent form in Italy, particularly on good ground. Has taken time to adapt to British racing judged on the last two runs. The rain that has fallen will help as I think last time the ground was a little quick. Has been kept on the same mark as the last run amd I think has a big chance judged on that today.

BLANC DE CHINE 1615 DONCASTER – (unplaced) has a very good strike rate and the application of a hood today should help the concentration further. Ultra consistent at Class 3 and 4 and has won on good and good to firm ground, has a good chance here today.

CORNISH PATH 1350 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) followed up her earlier Kempton success with a very encouraging second last time here. Has a chance to go one better today.

CHOOSEDAY 1450 RIPON – (4th – 6-1) has been running really well of late and won on this day at Chester last year! He is a dual 6f winner and ran very well at Glorious Goodwood last time in a hot race. Has a great chance from stall 1.

BLAINE 1530 RIPON – (unplaced) I need my head looking at with this one! However, I am still convinced this horse is much better than he's been showing! He won the Gimcrack last year and despite showing absolutely zip so far this year, he may be falling to a mark that befits his ability. Willing to give him one more go. BACCARAT was just getting going when he was badly hampered by the terrible fall involving Amy Ryan last time, and could run a big race. As could SECRET WITNESS, whose chances I really like, despite his draw.

My final two selections come at Newbury.

I'M YOUR MAN 1440 NEWBURY – (unplaced) suffered a head defeat last time to Lost in the Moment when conceding weight to that rival. They are both off level weights today and that could prove the telling fact as I think my selection will out battle his old foe in the closing stages

SOFT FALLING RAIN 1515 NEWBURY – (2nd – 9-4) this horse really is class, and has looked every bit a superstar this year. The Dubai form isn't that hot but I reckon he has way more class than the rivals today and should win this easy enough.
