Sandown and Mussleburgh

I think it’s only fitting to dedicate the blog to another brave hero whop died what he loved doing best. RIP Many Clouds, what a horse! The way he won last Saturday typifies the horse he was. So sad but we have to remember these brave horses and celebrate what enjoyment they gave us and how they love doing what they do.

On to today and a few cracking races to get my head around.

The Edinburgh Handicap Chase at 205 is having its inaugural run and there could be a few national clues in it. ALVARADO has to win or run very well to give him a chance of getting in there big one but he’s a bit long in the tooth now I feel. JUST A PAR is no doubt being targeted at the bug race but he has to shoulder a big weight but this is a race he could certainly win off this mark and he will appreciate the ground. GONALSTON CLOUD has missed his chance I feel, he should have won last time but was given too much to do. He stays forever though and could be in the mix. AZURE FLY is one who has been very consistent at shorter trips and if he stays he could run another cracker and is a value each way bet in a competitive affair. I am opting for DANCING SHADOW though, he caught my eye when finally getting his head infront at Doncaster last time in a race that I really fancied COURT BY SURPRISE in. He will love the ground and Noel Fehily on board is a huge plus and I think he will run a big race.

I have been waiting for DIEGO DU CHARMIL to come out again. He hasn’t shown anything like his true self as when winning the Fred Winter last year. He didn’t cope with the ground last time at Ascot and never really got into the race which STERNRUBIN won before that. He has had a nice break and will really like the ground and I’m still convinced he is a very smart horse and I think he will take this today. A definite win bet.

The Betfred Mobile Heroes Hurdle (3:00) is a belting puzzle to solve. The trends indicate a big weight is a huge disadvantage so forget the first 5 on the card. BEHIND TIME is a worthy favourite and is being very well supported. He ticks lots of boxes but I want to see another run after his flop last time. He could be very decent and if he runs anything like his first outing he should take this but his last run still sits in my mind and casts a doubt. EL TERREMOTO won on heavy at Haydock in November and it will be veery testing today which could suit him. VALHALLA has been very consistent prior to Christmas over hurdles and if he takes to the ground could be a very good each way bet at 22-1. I can’t ignore ROLLING DYLAN though. He’s never been out of the first three and was just pipped by SHANTOU BOB last time when stepping up in trip. An 8lb rise is fair and he will love the ground and should run a big race.

The final chase on the card at Sundown is another little belter. OTAGO TRAIL has shown glimpses of his quality and will love the ground but he has a big weight to carry. ROCK THE KASBAH looks a progressive horse and if he stays, and if being a big IF, he could win this. I can’t get away from SANDY BEACH though, he ran very well behind OUR KAEMPFER and KRUZHLININ last time when I think the ground was a little too quick for him. This softer ground will help, he’s a strong traveller, and a good jumper and I can’t believe there is 14-1 about him in places. He is the bet of the day for me.

SANDY BEACH 3:35 Sandown £10 win (14-1 Ladbrokes) (pulled up)

DIEGO DU CHARMIL 3:15 Musselburgh £5 win (9-1 Ladbrokes) (Won = £50)

DANCING SHADOW 2:05 Musselburgh £5 win (7-1 BET365) (Won = £40)

Staked £205

Returns £283.75

Another pretty successful week on the blog last time with CASPIAN PRINCE winning at 9-1 and a bit of place money for HYMENAIOS. The profit is looking pretty good at the moment and I’m hoping to add to it today. There are some cracking races today and lots of horses I track running and it’s been difficult to get them down to my best four for the blog, lets hope Ive chosen wisely. Looking forward to Royal Ascot next week and will hopefully get a blog up for each day. Father’s Day tomorrow so I’m looking forward to getting my feet up! Wishing my Dad a Happy Father’s day for tomorrow too – lets hope you can catch me on the blog at some point! I’ve opened up quite a gap!

On to the races then!

DUTCH ROSE 1515 YORK (NAP) (unplaced = -£5.00) she has been raised albs for defeating SIRIUS PROSPECT the other week here and I must admit I made a note of her that day, especially as I was on the runner up! She took her York record that day to 4 runs and 4 wins and with a slight ease in the ground I think she will take all the stopping today. It’s the first time this season I’ve resisted backing FENCING who looks more and more complex to ride, hope he doesn’t decide to put his right foot forward!

CAPO ROSSO 1420 SANDOWN (NB) – (NR) it proves wise sometimes to follow a horse in form and this fella is. A commanding front running display last time at Ripon caught the eye and that was his third successive win. The ground will be ideal again and this race isn’t much hotter than the Ripon encounter so his albs hike in the ratings shouldn’t peg him back.

MAVEN 1440 YORK (TREBLE) – (unplaced = – £5.00) this mare has been really consistent this year and has a pretty decent record at the track too. Her last run behind MY SPIRIT was good and she has been left on the same mark for this. The jockey gets on well with her and I can see her running on late to take this.

CASPIAN PRINCE 1535 MUSSELBURGH (unplaced = -£5.00) this boy did us a trial favour last week and it does pay well to follow a sprinter in form. I don’t think this will have come too quick for him and he can bounce out again from the plum draw and I don’t think anything will get to him. BODY AND SOUL nearly got us a big winner the other week and he could be a real danger, but then again another three or four have real chances too. A great little race.

I also fancy a few of these each way at big prices

My Dad’s selections :

G FORCE 1455 SANDOWN (3rd – 5/4 = £0.78)

DANZENO 1550 YORK (unplaced = – £5.00)

BODY AND SOUL 1535 MUSSELBURGH (4th – 4-1 = £2.50)

Derby Day

Derby Day today! What a cracking day of racing this is and I just hope the thunderstorms don’t spoil the going or the spectacle. I came very close last week to a big win on the blog with CLEVER COOKIE deadheading at 3-1 and then I had three seconds all beaten by hardly anything! BODY AND SOUL (17-2), SIRIUS PROSPECT (3-1) and ROYAL RASCAL (3-1).

Lets hope today brings a few winners and then its full steam ahead for Royal Ascot! I fancy quite a few horses across the meetings today but have picked 4 who I think have the best chance and the best odds for me! If you’re having a flutter good luck!

HYMENAIOS 1335 EPSOM (NAP) – (3rd – 5-1 = £3.12) this horse defeated CAPE CASTER at Doncaster in March and it won nice and convincingly and went into my notebook. CAPE CASTER has since won and franked the form. More importantly that day my selection had ROMSDAL comfortably beaten, and he’s supplemented for the derby today! Ignore the last run as the ground wasn’t ideal and I expect a much more positive showing today!

LATIN CHARM 1530 MUSSELBURGH (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) has travelled a fair distance to compete in this and he has pretty decent form in the book. Two runs this year have resulted in places with one or two of the others proving too good. Today is his day! One of his conquerors BLACK SCHNAPPS ran well the other week behind WRANGLER at Haydock and that form could prove decisive here. He’s 3 lb higher than that run but I really think he will win this today!

CASPIAN PRINCE 1515 EPSOM (TREBLE) – (WON 9-1 = £28.12) won here over this distance in in April on good to soft and has a good chance of repeating that from a decent draw. He’s albs higher now but for me the key is that Adam Kirby, who won on him in April, is up again, despite SEEKING MAGIC, who has a great chance too, running from the Cox yard. He must fancy this ones chances more and so do I. Cracking race though!

AZAGAL 1645 DONCASTER – (unplaced = -£5.00) I had this filly the other week when she won here in May. She is up 7lbs from that and was entered in a class 1 listed last time. She is not good enough at that level and returns to a more realistic grade today. The ground will be perfect for her and its forecast to have even more rain a tDoncaster which would help her. She could run a big race again at a ridiculous price. The top two in the market keep her price high and I think she will take this today. Kerching!!!!!

I haven’t included the big race in the blog but my selection is the following :

EBANORAN – (unplaced) people are questioning the form off the Derrinstown Trial but for me it always holds up. That day he hung badly right and was disqualified after the post. The camber of the track at Epsom will straighten him up and the extra two furlongs for me will bring out even more improvement . John Oxx is the other factor, he has sent there over for the Derby and two of those, SINNDAR and SEA THE STARS obliged. He obviously thinks this one is good enough and I’d love to see the Aga Khan’s colours win this again.

My Dad’s selections today are – (and he has some catching up to do!)

BLACK SHADOW 1335 EPSOM (2nd – £4.37)

KINGSTON HILL 1600 EPSOM (2nd – £4.68)

NOTARISED 1530 MUSSELBURGH (unplaced = -£5.00)

Current standings :

Profit – FATHER +£53.31

SON +£177.17

from £2.50 each way stakes on all selections.

Cheltenham in 2014

Happy New Year to everyone! Hope you are not nursing too heavy heads after last night's exploits! Here's to a happy and healthy year to you all!
On to today's action, as of yet my old man hasn't sent me his selections. He is nursing a hangover, so for the moment it's just my selections today. A good day's racing ahead, so lets all kick back, recover and enjoy these fine beasts doing what they do best.
POUNGACH 1400 CHELTENHAM (NAP) – (PU – £5.00) Is the class horse in the race. His chasing career really hasn't developed and I wonder whether this is a venture back over hurdles as a future career, or just a confidence booster? Either way he has a great chance. He is on an appealing mark today considering he ran 2 lengths behind OSCAR WHISKEY here the other year off OR155. Today he is on a mark of OR147 and must have a craxking each way chance. I thought he ewas moving well in the Badger Ales trophy and just seemed to run out of gas on his first run of the season. Very hopeful today!
IFANDBUTWHYNOT 1410 MUSSLEBURGH (NB) – (2nd – 13-2) Improving quickly and ran well last time to defeat the ill-fated CHATTERBOX at Newbury in a Listed contest. Drops a grade here and despite having a 6lb rise in the ratings I still think he will take this.
ACKERTAC 1430 CHELTENHAM (TREBLE) – (unplaced) Ran second at the festival to RAJDHANI EXPRESS over this distance and defeated GOULANES here too, but over further. He is a pound lower in the ratings today than that success and must have a big chance.
ALFIE SPINNER 1245 CHELTENHAM – (2nd – 7-1 = £4.38) Has been running consistently well in some good races. He has decent form on softish ground and is on a mark that should see him be AT LEAST competitive. With AP on his back it may see him grind it out from the front.

Derby Day

Derby day, steeped in history and THE race to win if you want to be a breeeding success. A unique race on a unique track always throws up bad luck in running and gives us a new superstar. It's the most famous race in the world, sit back and enjoy. Here are my best three today, plus a few others.
If you're having a flutter, good luck. Thanks for reading the blog and hopefully there are a few winners here today!
ASSIZES 1705 MUSSELBURGH (nap) – (3rd – 9-2) this horse really hasn't progressed as expected. This is a drop down in class and hopefully a confidence booster. He is fully 11lbs lower than when he ran Sir John Hawkwood close last year. The quicker ground will help and he should have too much class for these today.
MATROOH 1510 DONCASTER (nb) – (3rd – 11-4) a smooth course and distance success last time was impressive and was further franked by the runner up going and winning next time out. There should be more to come for this one.
LA FORTUNATA 1515 EPSOM (treble) – (unplaced) this horse hasn't won for a while and is consistently very good. Epsom form is key in these races and his form at the track reads 24322. He was beaten a short head last time and is a further pound better off with AJJAADD today. The drying ground will help further and he has a fantastic each way chance.
MARS 1600 EPSOM – (unplaced) this horse was favourite for this race before he even ran last year. He has plenty of speed in him and is a hold up horse and that could be key for me today, 9 outof the last 15 winners have been from off the pace. The O'Brien's will be wanting a strong pace to fully test the stamina of DAWN APPROACH (I don't think he will stay!), Richard Hughes is a master at judging pace as we saw yesterday in the Oaks and I reckon he could follow up here. If this guy stays balanced and is near the pace coming off Tattenham Corner he could bolt through.
NEIGHBOTHER 1405 EPSOM – (unplaced) this horse has strong 6f breeding being a brother to Age of Chivalry. He won well at Warwick last time and that form was franked when the runner up MIDNITE ANGEL won by 6 lengths next time out. This horse has potential to improve further.
I'm also having an each way flutter on my old cliff horse ES QUE LOVE 1545 DONCASTER(unplaced) he's back at 7f on good ground and has dropped a few pounds to below his last winning mark.

Naps 39/175 = 22.3%

Easter Saturday Selections

I thought it was fitting to have the blog photo of the great ALBERTAS RUN who I hope is going to enjoy a long and well deserved retirement, what a horse he was!
On to the racing and what a day of racing we have. The re-run Lincoln, Haydock and a super card at Musselburgh with a few old favourites, and then of course we have Meydan and the richest race in the world. I've selected a few from those meetings for you. I'm hoping I can keep the big priced handicap naps going on a Saturday. I have another big priced one that could go very well.
LANDSCAPE 1440 HAYDOCK (nap) – (FELL) this horse has always been held in high regard by his yard and he ran well when winning at Exeter beating BILLY TWYFORD. He franked the form a few times too. Landscape then won well at Taunton in really heavy ground before running fourth behind GEVREY CHAMBERTIN at Wincanton. He ran so poorly last time at Chepstow and that should be ignored. He has blinkers on today to sharpen him up and I think he will go enjoy this better ground. If he is focused and reproduces his earlier successes he has a damn good sniff.
HAMISH MCGONAGALL 1500 MUSSELBURGH (nb) – (unplaced) this guy is a class horse and has the ability to win this again. He does have to give Tangerine Trees 15lbs however. He has been running Group 1 races creditably remember! His last three runs here have produced three wins – that is solid enough!
PROPHESY 1615 DONCASTER (treble) – (unplaced) this guy is returning from a long lay off. He did however win first time out last season off a longer one. He has put some good performances in last season and this distance will suit as will the conditions.
CHAPTER SEVEN 1505 DONCASTER – (unplaced) I'm opting for this one in the Lincoln as he is progressive, goes well fresh and will enjoy the ground. Four year olds have a great record this and he is weighted similar to past winners. His run when beating LAHAAG at York was a good one and with luck in running I hope I have the winner. I have to also place some each way money on SWIFTLY DONE who has some decent form in the locker and will also relish the ground.
OUR JONATHAN 1430 DONCASTER – (3rd – 4-1) this one goes well fresh and has been running well over further, that stamina will be needed in todays ground and I think he will stay on better than the rest to take this.
CLOUDY TOO 1515 HAYDOCK – (3rd – 12-1) this one has some really good form including a course and distance success here. He has also gone in at Wetherby, I always look for that at Haydock as they are both similar tough tracks. He couldn't get close last time at Cheltenham and despite a rise in the ratings he can go well. People are put off him due to the better ground, but he has won on good and on good to soft.
TOP NOTCH TONTO 1535 MUSSELBURGH – (unplaced) his win at Ayr was impressive and he ran a good race after that behind WILLIE THE WHIPPER. He has some weight to carry here but I think he has more to offer this year and is a crazy price.
MR SPIGGOTT 1355 DONCASTER – (unplaced) this one has a good chance when reflecting on his second at Windsor off the same mark last year. He will enjoy the ground and has a decent draw.
I'm also putting a few quid on the following :
BALINROAB 1550 HAYDOCK (unplaced)
EXCEL BOLT 1425 HAYDOCK (unplaced)
RASAMAN 1645 HAYDOCK (unplaced)
KRYTON FACTOR 1545 MEYDAN (3rd – 9-1)
Enjoy today's action and hopefully I have found a few winners here. Can't wait for next week at Aintree and the big one. Happy punting everyone.

Friday Selections

I have been suffering with the dreaded man flu all week and am hoping it is going to let up soon. Got a head that stuffed full of god knows what! I think I'm keeping the Lemsip factory churning too, must have had about 4 a day for god knows how long. So thought I would do a little blog to try and keep the spirits up. Here are my best three selections for Friday :
DOOR BOY 1510 MUSSELBURGH (nap) – (unplaced) is top weight for a reason and has run in much better races than this. He has won a class two and ran well in class one races. Ran ok on his return at Doncaster but looked like he needed the run. The yard on in form and he has the class to take this.
DRAWNFROMTHEPAST 1600 WOLVES (nb) – (WON 11-8) an old favourite of mine and is bang in form with course and distance successes. Will probably be short but with question marks against Majuro and the trip I can see him winning again.

BALLYGARVEY 1315 LINGFIELD (treble) – (WON 9-4) won a hurdle race here on heavy ground and with similar ground underfoot and an extended distance again on his second chase should play into his strengths.

The Derby

Here is the day, the greatest flat race of them all – The Derby! With only nine runners today though it won’t be the usual spectacle it is in my opinion. My selection is further down the page. Yesterday proved to be relatively successful with CLINICAL (7-1) winning. Lets hope a few more come in today.
UKRANIAN 1530 MUSSELBURGH – (nap) (unplaced) Mark Johnston has a great record in this and saddles 5. My selection is an outsider yet I think it has a great chance. Winning well over 1m 4f first time out and then a steady gallop last time didn’t suit. I’m sure the instructions today will be to dictate the pace and I’m hoping then they won’t get to him.
PASTORAL PLAYER 1435 HAYDOCK – (nb) (WON – 3-1) is a smart handicapper and is ready to claim one like this. Is generally better in larger fields, but the firmer ground will help today. Fancy him to come late with plenty in hand and pip Red Jazz.
FIERY LAD 1650 EPSOM – (treble) (WON – 10-1) has form here and on the ground and also has won at this class. Been running poorly lately, but has the master of Epsom Fallon on board to steer him home.
I’m also having a wager on these horses too today :
DAZINSKI 1410 HAYDOCK (2nd – 10-1)
SOHRAAB 1515 EPSOM (unplaced)
THOUGHT WORTHY 1605 EPSOM (unplaced)
SET TO MUSIC 1510 HAYDOCK (2nd – 2-1)
Stats as of 2/6//12
WINS 45/254 = 17.7%
NAPS 15/70 = 21.4%
PLACED 62/254 = 24.4%
WIN OR PLACED 107/254 = 42.1%
Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!

Fantastic Friday

Another decent day on the blog to keep the trend going! BEAUFORT TWELVE won at 15-2 and a second from SUPREME QUEST at 7-5. Looking forward to the weekends racing, yet there is a multitude of racing on Friday!
Love the photo above taken by Martin, sums up English horse racing tracks for me. Check out more of Martin’s photos and tips here.
GEORGE BAKER 1510 GOODWOOD – (nap) (unplaced) he is weighted right up to his best form but has got a great record on good to firm ground with all his four wins coming on the ground over 7 or 8 furlongs. Frankie up too! Must go well.
BERTOLIVER 2010 CATTERICK – (nb) (unplaced) has got the plum draw and his last run, whilst disappointing should have tuned him up! Has won on good to firm before and I’m hopeful of a great run
THIRD HALF 1605 HAYDOCK – (treble) (unplaced) ran well last year and won over 7f. The last run was over too far and too soft. The drop back to a mile and the better ground should help.
I also fancy a little flutter on BELLS O PEOVER 1945 MUSSELBURGH (unplaced) his run last time was very poor, yet has good form on good to firm (3 wins) and this trip on better ground should suit. I’m also going to highlight GLEN COUNTESS 1825 TOWCESTER (NR) I watched him win really well at Warwick the other week and this step up to fences shouldn’t be a problem.
Stats as of 25/5/12
WINS 36/209 = 17.2%
NAPS 12/62 = 19.3%
PLACED 53/209 = 25.3%
WIN OR PLACED 89/209 = 42.5%

Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!

Friday Tips

Classic time tomorrow – first glance I’m swayed with Power and Bronterre, will study a bit more though before the race. SAVE THE BEES was just pipped on Thursday, and I think the handicapper has now got BOUCHER GARCON well in his grasp!
Here are Friday’s selections :
MAWJOODAH 1540 WOLVERHAMPTON – (nap) (unplaced) was a course and distance winner last August and the third place finish in the spin round here he had last month should have got rid of the cobwebs. (3 points each way)

BEAUTY PAGEANT 1610 WOLVERHAMPTON – (nb) (unplaced) was a smart sprinter last year and must have more to come, has to be one of those with the best chance here. (3 point win)

HONEYMEAD 1600 MUSSELBURGH – (treble) (2nd – 9-1 = 6.5 points) lost her way a little bit last year, but her run at Newmarket on soft the previous season has to give her a sniff here. Has the worst draw to overcome though! (2 points each way)

STAKE = 13 points

RETURNS = 6.5 points

BANK = + 21 points

Stats as of 4/5/12

WINS 23/124 = 18.5%
NAPS 8/42 = 19%
PLACED 30/124 = 24.2%
WIN OR PLACED 53/124 = 42.7%

Remember if you are having a wager to bet within your means. These are my selections and I am not suggesting you follow my advice, I only do this for a bit of fun!
