Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon

So after a long break and a nice fortnight of sunshine on my back it's time to get the blog going after after a sabbatical. It's takes quite a while to do this properly and prior to my break I didn't have the motivation for some reason. When I get like that the best thing I always do is have a break from it. I do this for fun and if it stops being fun you just need a break. So lets hope my new found vigour and drive leads to some decent winners. Not a bad day today although the soft ground has carved a few of the cards up, and we have got the Ebor meeting at York next week to look forward to. Sit back, enjoy the racing and hopefully I'll find a winner or two on here; or as was happening previously, my dad certainly will.

PALLASATOR 1435 NEWBURY (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
This is going to be a slog today. My selection has proven stamina and they will need bags of at up the Newbury straight today. He ran well in the Goodwood Cup behind Big Orange and has always looked like a horse capable of group success. His 2 length third behind FORGOTTEN RULES at Ascot on Champion Day last year was a decent effort and he is a pound lower than that effort today. The trip is maybe a little short but with the ground being as it is it will play to his strengths and I doubt they will be too quick for him.

WITHERNSEA 1510 NEWBURY (nb) (3rd – 7-2 = £2.18)
Has to get the nod now the ground is soft. He wasn't too far behind. SALATEEN last time on quick ground and the winner did sneak a run on them all. That form is decent as is his second to Arctic Feeling in a class 3 earlier in the year. He must have a big chance. Good old PASTORAL PLAYER went in for me at Glorious Goodwood and had the ground been a bit better he would be carrying some of my money too.

BRETON ROCK 1545 NEWBURY (treble) (3rd – 5-1 = £3.12)
This has always been a decent horse on soft ground and that was never more prominent when he took this last year off the same mark. He's never really got going this year and was given too much to do last time, but he was finishing strongly. On softer ground today than last year he should have a better chance and I hope he shows his true colours. I'm fascinated at how ADAAY will fare, if he copes with the extra distance and the ground he could be a huge price.

ECCLESTON 1530 RIPON (unplaced = – £5.00)
This is a cracking race as always and O'Mears has a brilliant track record and a decent record in the race. At Ripon you're either better on one side of the track or the other, I'm hoping my guys side will have it today. He's progresive horse and is being backed quite a bit. Old Spinatrix could be his danger.

BIG OUTSIDER – this is going to be a new part of the blog where I will select an outsider which I think has a decent chance of winning.
Today's selection is KASTINI 1615 NEWBURY(WON 14-1) he is on a decent and appealing mark and prefers some cut in the ground. He has ran well on soft and heavy ground and has breeding that supports this ground today. Denis Coakley is a trainer I keep my eye on and his booking of Paul Hanagan for this is an eye catcher too.

My Dad's selection are :
BONDS GIRL 1450 NEWMARKET (unplaced = -£5.00)
CAPTAIN BOB 1510 NEWBURY (unplaced = -£5.00)
HERE COMES WHEN 1545 NEWBURY (unplaced = £5.00)

York, Haydock and Newmarket

For today’s blog I look to the stars! I blooming well need to with my recent suggestions. Last week was another blank show with not even a place; I can only apolgise if you were foolish enough to side with my thoughts! The stars may give a change of fortune today….so he says! The photo above is of the horses head Nebula…apt indeed! Read on and you will see why! Good luck with whatever your selections are today, I hope you fare better than me against the old foe!

ASTROPHYSICS 1455 YORK (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
I really like the chances of this horse in his handicap debut today. He won over 6f at Newmarket last year, the form of that race was franked with the 2nd,4th and 5th winning shortly after. He then showed he has speed over 5f with a cracking effort in the Flying Childers, going down by a head to BEACON. If he reproduces that he must have a sniff. He’s got a mark of OR104 for this but is weighted nicely at 9st 1lb and he could run a big race at a big price!

MEHDI 1630 NEWMARKET (nb) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
I really fancied the chances of this one last time at York and he ran well behind ALGAR LAD – he just got going to late. He’s on the same mark again today andI’m hoping the quicker ground will push him on as he comes out of the dip.

DUSKY QUEEN 1345 YORK (treble) (3rd – 7-1 = £4.37)
It pays at times to side with a mare in form and this girl is certainly that. She rana cracker here last time beating Royal Seal in the same race she won last year. She was impressive too. She’s been raised 7lbs for that but it may need a little more to stop her. HIGHLAND COLORI ran much better last time at Goodwood and is the danger, knowing my luck he’ll win as I’ve left him alone for the first time this year!

EMERAHLDZ 1530 YORK (Unplaced = -£5.00)
This filly is another decent horse and she needs genuine good ground. She’s been dropped back to a mark of OR86 today, just a pound above her mark when second here in October in a Class 2 handicap. She’s in a Class 3 today with a little more weight but she’s been crying out for a run with a few prior engagements scratched due to the ground. I’m hopeful of a good run.

My Dad’s selections are:
ALFRED HUTCHINSON 1345 YORK (2nd – 8-1 = £5.00)
WAKEA 1420 YORK (unplaced = -£5.00)
MONSIEUR JOE 1455 YORK (WON 9-1 = £28.12)
OUT DO 1510 HAYDOCK (2nd – 3-1 = £1.87)

Didnt have too much to shout about on the blog yesterday but thought KINGSGATE NATIVE ran well in third and that HIGHLAND COLORI ran much better and showed the spark is still there. CELESTIAL PATH ran a cracker in the Guineas from a disadvantaged draw and was really moving in the dip. He’s certainly one to watch at Royal Ascot! On to the ladies today and I had a cracking day this time last year with both the MIGHTY YAR and then GOLDREAM (25-1) winning on the blog. I’m hoping I’ve got a few again here. Good luck with whatever you’ve selected, sit back and enjoy and then we’re off to Chester next week! Love that meeting!

GOTHIC 1350 NEWMARKET (nap)
He has always looked a decent horse to me and despite wins with cut in the ground I think the quicker ground today will really suit him. He ran possibly his best race at Ascot on quick ground off the same mark as today. His run at Pontefract will have sharpened him up a bit and I’m expecting a winning run from him today.

RUWAIYAN 1500 NEWMARKET (nb)
I tiiped up GOLDREAM in this last year and I’m hopeful I’ve found another decent priced winner. SECRETINTHEPARK had solid C+D form and has won this and ran well last year. Despite moving to the yard that won this last year and will the beforementioned he’s a pound higher than his 6th last year and I dont think he’ll win. BLAINE found his old form ladt year and he has a sniff but he may be handicapped to his best. My selection isn’t though and I think he can go onto bigger things. He ran really well in the group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle last year behind DANZENO and followed thst up with a 2L fourth in the Stewards Cup. That is smart form and this quicker ground and better draw will help today! There is plenty of pace around him and I can see Hughesie striking late on him.

RIZEENA 1425 NEWMARKET (treble)
This is a cracking race! FINTRY has decent form but couldn’t beat INTEGRAL here last time, and she folded a bit tamely for me. BELLE D’OR is interesting and she could improve lots this year and the step up should help too. I have to opt for RIZEENA though, she has the group one form to bring and despite a disappointing three year old campaign she still has class and ran well in her last outing. She has a question mark anout the trip but I think she’ll get it.

LOCAL TIME 1540 NEWMARKET
With a couple of noteful absentees this race isnt as hot as it should be! Despite the poor ride on TIGGY WIGGY last time I still can’t see her staying a mile. She’s built for speed pure and simple. OSAILA has had a fair few miles on the clock but she has a solid chance today as does JELLICLE BELL who caught the eye last time. I’m opting for LOCAL TIME, while she has to improve for her MEYDAN successes she has the potential and is bang in form. She also beat a few types here in the Oh So Sharp Stakes last season and I think she’ll like this quicker ground. James Doyle has ridden her in her last four wins and I expect a boldshow again today.

I also like the chances of SWNYMOR 1445 HAMILTON, WILLIAM OF ORANGE 1405 SALISBURY and NAMHROODAH in the Pretty Polly!

QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS

I can't believe how quickly the first classic has come upon us! The flat season really does start proper with the guineas weekend and then Chester and York coming up pretty quickly afterwards!this is why I love the flat at this time of year – its quality racing after quality racing. I'm resetting my competition with my dad today – in the NH season he beat me in terms of winning weeks but I had more profit than him. Honours even? Sit back and enjoy the racing today – I hope I've found a couple of big priced handicappers amongst an old favourite!

Here are my selections :

KINGSGATE NATIVE 1430 NEWMARKET (nap) (3rd – 8-1 = £5.00)
Old Father time is catching up with this guy but he remains a huge favourite of mine. He always runs a solid race and still has a touch of class. He runs off the same mark of OR107 as his last run and win and he has come second in this race for the last two years behind SOLE POWER. Two years ago off this mark too. There is nothing of SOLE POWER'S ability against him today and my guy will love the fast ground and he has a great record first time out with runs of 1,2,2,2.

DEEDS NOT WORDS 1525 GOODWOOD (nb) (unplacec = -£5.00)
A decent performer at best but he has dropped down to a handy mark and back to his last winning mark of OR88. He will appreciate the ground and the stablehave sent out an odd winner or two. He could surprise a few of these and run a big race at a big price

HIGHLAND COLORI 1450 GOODWOOD (treble) (3rd – 14-1 = £8.75)
I put this fella up on the blog a few weeks ago and despite being nicely positioned he faded at the end. He is still on avery appealing mark and the drop back to 7f will suit. I'm going to give him another go today, he has been far better than his mark suggests and I'm hoping for a revival. PASTORAL PLAYER is a horse I jumped off a cliff with but has been on a long losing run and I can't select him today but he is also on a hell of a mark.

CELESTIAL PATH 1545 NEWMARKET (unplaced = -£5.00)
I backed this horse when he won first time out at York last year and then he followed it up cosily in a Listed race at Haydock. He really does have a touch of class and will love this quicker ground. He has to improve on his Racing Post Trophy third but he hated the ground thst day and stillfinished third behind ELM PARK. Sir Mark Prescott knows how to get a handicapper ready but he hasn't had a 2000 Guineas runner ever! He wouldn't run himif he didnt think he was good enough thoughand I think he has a brilliant each way chance. I also think IVAWOOD could win this, he was class last season and despite an under par performance last time the run will have done him a world of good. He still has all the ability and will run a big race.

My Dad's selections are :
LUSTROUS 1415 GOODWOOD (unplaced = -£5.00)
ONLINE ALEXANDER 1430 NEWMARKET (unplaced = -£5.00)
IVAWOOD 1545 NEWMARKET (3rd 10-1 = £6.25)

Newmarket and Ascot

myWPEdit Image

Well my old man gave me a true pasting on the blot last week. He tipped up BRONZE ANGEL (14-1) to win the Cambridgeshire and Exitas (6-1) at Market Rasen too. He’s getting closer in the standings but still a bit off in the profit with only a few weeks of the flat season left. We reset when the jumps start! I got up this morning and saw some strange wet stuff falling from the sky and had kind of forgotten what it was! I’m sat typing the blog thinking will it or won’t it rain at Newmarket and Ascot to affect the ground. Anyway whatever happens we’ve got some cracking racing to look forward to and of course the Arc tomorrow – for me TAGROODHA wins that!

Good luck today if you’re having a flutter – here are my selections.

RECKLESS ABANDON 1515 ASCOT (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) was such a smart two year old and even more so with cut in the ground. Has been getting his head back around racing this year and a decent second to MECCAS ANGEL in September, who has gone on and won again since is a decent form line. I’m hoping some of the aforementioned wet stuff gets in the ground to help his chances. He must have a great shout off 110 today.

YODELLING 1455 NEWMARKET (NB) – (NR) she was so impressive on her racecourse debut in a race that Godolphin have such a good record in. She was going easily and won in a canter. She’s bred to run at this level and higher and I’m expecting big things from her today and in the future.

FINTRY 1530 NEWMARKET (TREBLE) – (3rd – 7-2 = £2.18) Maxim Guyon has deserted this fella in preference for Miss France. I’m not about to desert him though. I was on when he battled well to win at Sandown last time and despite taking a bit of winding up he was comfortably clear of the rest. Come rain or shine he will act on the ground and I think Monsieur Guyon will regret his decision.

MUTHMIR 1405 ASCOT – (NR) I have to put this guy on despite his short price – pretty similar to TIGGY WIGGY last week, its like printing money with this one. Won the Portland with loads in hand despite blowing the start and having a poor passage. Bags of class and should take this too if the rain doesn’t get in! If he’s a non-runner my other selection for the blog purpose is below.

MORACHE MUSIC 1550 ASCOT – has a decent record here and his current mark of 106 is doable. Ran very well on good ground to beat BADR AL BADOOR at Donny and was just behind JUSTICE DAY at Haydock in July. BADR AL BADOOR has since franked the form beating DANZENO and they both go up in class today. JUSTICE DAY goes against MUTHMIR also in a better race. This guy stays where he is and has a great chance!

My Dad’s selections are :

STEPS 1405 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

TROPICS 1515 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

Cambridgeshire Day

myWPEdit Image

A return this week to more normal surroundings for the blog after a weekend away in beautiful County Durham last week. My selections at the moment are in the pits of despair, trying to recollect my last big winner on the blog is like trying to remember the last time Liverpool were the champions of England! However, today brings renewed vigour and hope, and remember the jumps are on the horizon!!!!

QUICK WIT 1550 NEWMARKET (NAP) – (unplaced =-£5.00) here we go then. The nap in the Cambridgeshire and 40-1 when I’m writing this. This fella has been running in some top company this season and he has had a good few months off. He was a narrow second to GRANDEUR at Goodwood last year over 10f and had the likes of BROWN PANTHER AND DICK DOUGHTYWYLIE behind him that day. He just hasn’t been able to cut it with the big boys. He is 6lbs less in the ratings than that defeat to GRANDEUR and he also has stall 1 to bounce from which is where the quicker grounds could well be. Hughesy on board too! An interesting selection that has a great chance!

WHOZTHECAT 1535 HAYDOCK (NB) – (unplaced =-£5.00) has been poor this season but interestingly is now dropped in class and runs off 88, a mark he has previously won off. This mark is also his lowest in over 12 months. The good ground should suit and if he runs to his previous form he will have a good chance at a huge price!

TIGGY WIGGY 1510 NEWMARKET (TREBLE) – (WON 6-4 = £4.68) this filly has been phenomenal this year and I just can’t see her losing this and she possibly should be odds on based on her demolition of the field in the Lowther.

NAFAQA 1435 NEWMARKET – (2nd 5-4 = £0.78) this fella come where with the best form on offer. With TOOCOOLFORSCHOOL franking the form so impressively last week you would expect more to come from my selection.

Pitmans Derby

Good morning from a wet Sheffield! To be honest I'm thankful for a bit of rain the hayfever has been killing me over recent weeks so any respite is a plus. I had a cracking time at Haydock last Saturday for their evening meeting. Only had one winner and a couple of seconds, the winner Steve Prescott goes again today at Chester – he looks a decent prospect. Anyway on to todays selections and the highlight is the Pitmans Derby today, its a bloody tough race to pick the winner – good luck with it! I'm opting for GLENARD to take the race. He looked progressive last year and has form on this type of ground, will get the trip and has a good each way chance.

CHANCERY 1455 NEWMARKET – (NAP) (3rd – 16-1 = £10.00) this horse has been knocking on the door of late but has also run a few disappointing races when fancied. There are a few ground question marks with some of these today and I'm chancing him to run back to form on ground that should suit. He has to reverse form with BATTALION from that race at Ripon which also had SUEGIOO back in third.

MIDNITE ANGEL 1745 NEWMARKET – (NB) (WON – 9-2 = £14.06) I thought this girl would run better at Royal Ascot. She showed great speed as a juvenile and hasnt met the requirements of the lofty targets she has has. This is a big drop in class and I think she has a cracking chance today.

ROYAL RASCAL 1515 NEWCASTLE – (TREBLE) (2nd -14-1 = £8.75) this filly is another one who has some decent form in the bag. She came just short against BONDESIRE at Chester, who has since run well. Off a mark 7lbs lower than when defeating ODOOJ at York. She has been running well of late, except last time out, but I'm willing to put a line through that. The quicker ground shouldnt be a hinderance, she finished 3rd to RODSHU QUEEN on good to firm. 20-1 is a bonkers price for me as I write this.

GOLDREAM 1610 WINDSOR – (NR) won well for the blog at Newmarket on 1000 Guineas day and then ran creditably on easier ground the next time. This faster surface will bring out the best in him and I'm hopeful of a winning race. Should get a good toe from a few front runners and then with Jimmy Fortune powering him through it could be set up nice for him.

I also like the chances of BODY AND SOUL 1440 NEWCASTLE and I'm intrigued to see how BONNIE GREY 1420 NEWMARKET runs on better ground.

My Dad's selections are :
MUTHMIR 1405 NEWCASTLE (2nd – 9-4 = £1.40)
SAAYERR 1440 NEWCASTLE (unplaced – = -£5.00)
GABRIELS LAD 1530 NEWMARKET (unplaced – =-£5.00)

The 1000 Guineas

myWPEdit Image

Not a great day yesterday to do honest! Although good old KINGSGATE NATIVE nearly got there! On to the second classic and the girls get their chance! Should be another cracking day and we’ve got Chester to look forward to in the week too. Result! Be lucky!

IHTIMAL 1550 NEWMARKET (NAP) – (3rd 7-1) was quite impressive last year when winning over 7f at Newmarket and then over the mile at Doncaster and has since followed that up with two successes at Meydan. Really liked the way she stretched away last time over 10furlongs and I think the undulations will suit her style and this extra stamina will come in to play.

GOLDREAM 1510 NEWMARKET (NB) – (WON 25-1) this fella has some very good handicap form on offer including a narrow second to BOGART over 5f at York. He has form over 6f too including a win here. Is dropped a couple of pounds and now races off the same mark that saw a narrow defeat to ANCIENT CROSS at Doncaster. He has a good chance in my opinion at a very big price. Others to take my eye in the race are SECRETINTHEPARK, who has course and distance form here and I have always liked. ZANETTO was campaigned at the top level last year to no avail and drops back in class here after being gelded – he’s dangerous!

GIFTED GIRL 1440 NEWMARKET (TREBLE) – (3rd – 7-1) she ran some cracking races last year starting with a comfy success at Ascot and then a narrow defeat by THISTLE BIRD on softer ground despite being raise 12lbs. A win at Ponte followed be fore being the closet to Dank at Arlington in the Beverly D Stakes. This drop to Group 3 class is a good start for her and she should run a big race!

MIGHTY YAR 1405 NEWMARKET – (WON 5-1) is relatively unexposed and there should be more to come. Ignore the first outing this year as that was poor run but he had a lot to do that day on poor terms and for me the ground was unsuitable. Hoping for a better show today!

The First Classic of 2014

myWPEdit Image

It is here the first classic of the flat season. This is why I love British racing, within a few weeks of it beginning we have two classics, then we’re often for the dante and Chester, awesome stuff! Today is a fantastic renewal and we also have the monstrous Scoop6 hovering above us, I have joined up with the #teamchoochoo team for a combined perm to see if we can win the big prize! Lets hope so! My dad bounced back last week on the blog with an impressive 9-1 selection in MY KINGDOM. Other than that it was a pretty drab affair, lets hope today brings some winners. Whatever happens it will certainly be a day to remember I reckon. I can’t remember a classic like this for a good few years with so much strength in depth and it should be a race to remember, and I think KINGMAN will take all the beating today. There will be no blog next Saturday as I’m at Warwick for the weekend and going to their evening meeting, can;t wait! Be lucky today everyone!

Here are my selections for the blog :

BURANO 1405 NEWMARKET (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) I never really like napping short priced favourites for the blog as I try and find a bit of value! This horse really caught my eye when running behind GABRIEL’S KAKA at Newbury the other week. He came into the race coasting and never got the run he needed and was then eased to the line and finished a 4 and 3/4 length 8th. On the vast open ground at Newmarket if he approaches the last furlong or two with the same gusto he may burst through and score. He is we overdue a win and today could be his day.

KINGMAN 1550 NEWMARKET (NB) – (2nd – 6-4 = £0.93) This fella has to be on the blog. He has been so impressive in everything he has down so far and his victory at Newbury oozed class. I know there are concerns over the ground, but for me it can’t be that quick ands there were concerns from local trainers about them watering earlier in the week as it was good enough ground, especially at the bushes. They are just worried because of his chipped bone injury, but for me its still good ground and he will bound away in those famous silks! I cannot ignore OUTSTRIP who comes here on the back of a Breeders Cup win and is crazily priced at 25-1, he has to have an excellent each way chance.

KINGSGATE NATIVE 1440 NEWMARKET (TREBLE) – (2nd 12-1 = £7.50) this old stalwart returns again in a race I backed him in last year at 25-1. He renews his rvialry with his conqueror that day SOLE POWER and comes here rated a better horse than last year, credit to his trainer Robert Cowell for eking out improvement. He is superb when fresh, and when the ground rides faster, he unlike Kingman, could do with the ground a little faster. However the undulations and the up hill climb really suit his late bursts and he come where with another solid chance.

MAGIC CITY 1455 GOODWOOD – (unplaced = -£5.00) is back on his last winning mark and is unbeaten here at Goodwood and he is also unbeaten on downhill tracks. The style of course is obviously suited to his style and he has another cracking chance here at extending that unbeaten course record.

My Dad’s selections are

Craven Meeting

I used to love watching this meeting on the TV as it was the first chacne to really see some horses preparing for a classic tilt and I think its such a shame its not on Channel 4 anymore. Below are my fancies tomorrow though :

PACHA DU POLDER 1550 CHELTENHAM (NAP) – (unplaced) this horse as I have said before on the blog really does need good ground. He ran a decent race at the festival and for me drops back to a more workable trip tomorrow and must have a great chance.

FLYBALL 1420 NEWMARKET (nb) – (unplaced) was impressive in defeat in the Brocklesby and then followed that up with a narrow vicotry at Leicester. Should run another good race and the way he bounces out will give him a crucial lead over the others

MUSHIR 1530 NEWMARKET (treble) – (2nd – 3-1) I was really impressedwith how this horse won at York last year moving easily through the entire field to score. He is bred to stay this distance and I think will give a good account of himself.

MAJEYDA 1605 NEWMARKET – (3rd – 6-1) she won well over a mile here towards the end of last season and she went into my notebook then. I'm willing to give her a go here despite the high profile opposition.

I also like the chances of TOP SMART on better ground and depsite reverting back to hurdles THE ROMFORD PELE really does have some decent form in the book and should run well at a big price.
