Sandown, Ripon and a Monster Scoop6

myWPEdit Image

The curtain comes down on another fantastic jumps season. My favourite part of the season has to be HOLYWELL winning again at the Cheltenham festival. Love that horse! Probably every man and his dog are having a go at the Scoop6 today with the forecast jackpot, to pick 6 winners in itself is a miracle, never mind with 90 odd runners covering the races, more chance of winning there lottery, but someone has to, I hope its me, my family or one of you twitter friends! Good luck!

I went to Ripon racecourse in the Easter break for the first time, its a beautiful little course and the photo above is of ROUDEE winning the first at that meeting. I’m opting for a few selections again there this afternoon. The weather is key today and there has been a lot of rain, as I type the blog, Ripon reports as being on the slow side of good, Sandown – good to soft, good in places and Haydock good to firm! A right mixed bag! Looking forward to two weeks today as I will be in Warwick for my annual jaunt there!

Here are my selections for today, with my dad’s too, I’m currently whooping his ass! Whatever you select today good luck!

PEARL ICE 1450 RIPON (NAP) – (unplaced -£5.00) Looked a decent horse a few years ago and has disappointed a little bit to be fair. However he is a course and distance winner here on good to soft beating BECKERMET off 90. He also won at Doncaster over this distance on good to soft also off 90. Has raced off a high mark of 98 and has now dropped to an appealing mark of 92. He is well drawn and the visor may sharpen him up. I think he has a cracking chance here! I watched BARKSTON ASH win here the other week and he did it well and he is a danger despite his low draw.

POLLY PEACHUM 1625 SANDOWN (NB) – (2nd – 100/30 = £2.08)this mare ran a cracker again last week at Cheltenham and she has won me a good bit of money from here last two runs. The ground is key to her success so I’m slightly concerned on that front and advise caution here. However, a mare in form is always worth following and she has been raised 15lbs for her win at Cheltenham. I still think she has more to offer to be honest and Barry Geragty was very positive about her chances too in his blog.

CAESAR MILAN 1730 SANDOWN – (TREBLE) (3rd – 4-1 = £2.50) this is a cracking little race and some good horses running. L’UNIQUE may well have had his form boosted if POLLY PEACHUM goes in again and is a worthy top weight. However, my selection has been given some sharp rises by the handicapper and I think rightly so as he is a decent prospect. Two wins on heavy were impressive and the tongues tie really sorted him out. He ran really well back in a Grade 3 at here behind BRAVE VIC. Both DOCTOR HARPER and BROTHER BRIAN have gone on to win again from this race and my selection has been raised another 3 lbs to 134, the same mark BROTHER BRIAMN now has. He has to have a chance although I would have preferred the ground a bit softer.

STIFF UPPER LIP 1405 SANDOWN – (unplaced = -£5.00) won very easily in a novice event at Towcester on Sunday and interestingly is chucked back in here off the same mark. He also won very well at Newbury earlier in the year destroying the field on heavy ground. A versatile horse that could be on the up. Worth a punt at a good price seen as some of the more favoured horses have question marks against them.

As for the BET365 Gold cup I think ROALCO DES FARGES has a great chance, he was second in this to TIDAL BAY two years again off a pound lower and the Scottish National was too far for him. That said I have to chance my arm with my old favourite OPENING BATSMAN, he has ran like a pig all year and the trainer doesn’t know why as he shows all his ability at home. He has been given blinkers to day to hopefully sharpen him up and the increased distance will also help too. This guy has bags of class but hasn’t fancied it, interestingly Nick Scholfield rung up wanting the ride when Fehily got off! IF, and its a big IF he runs to his form when he beat ROLLING ACES last year he has a cracking chance. Co-incidently he is back down to the mark he won that race off!!

My Scoop6 selections are :

Leg 1 – STIFF UPPER LIP

Leg 2 – SIR REGINALD

Leg 3 – PEARL ICE

Leg 4 – YOURARTISONFIRE

Leg 5 – MOIDORE

Leg 6 – OPENING BATSMAN

My Dad’s selections today are :

KELTUS 1405 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

ARKDIILY WITNESS 1550 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

CAESAR MILAN 1730 SANDOWN (3rd 4-1 = £2.50)

MY KINGDOM 1655 DONCASTER (WON 9-1 = £28.12)

Current standings – FATHER 7-8 SON

Profit – FATHER £68.04 SON £124.24

Ripon Raceday

As part of my week away in the caravan we're off to Ripon Races today! I've. Not been to the course before but I know its a lovely little course. I've picked my selections below and I also fancy a couple at Cheltenham too.

MIDTERM BREAK 1355 RIPON (2nd – 11-2)
POWERFUL PRESENCE 1430 RIPON (3rd – 25-1)
ADAM'S ALE 1505 RIPON (treble) (3rd – 5-1)
MAVEN 1540 RIPON (nb) (2nd – 9-2)
CHAMPAGNE SYDNEY 1615 RIPON (unplaced)
MON BRAV 1650 RIPON (nap) (unplaced)
MENDELITA 1725 (unplaced)
INJAZ 1755 RIPON (unplaced)

The ones I like at Cheltenham are :

THE PIRATES QUEEN 1405 (3rd 9-4)
POLLY PEACHUM 1515 (WON 9-1)
MON PARRAIN 1550 (WON 14-1)

And finally FENCING 1640 NEWMARKET (3rd – 7-2)

Saturday selections

What a feast of racing there is on offer today. With some fantastic horses competing in Group races and tough handicaps, and all this with York's Ebor meeting on the horizon! We're certainly in for a treat or two over the upcoming week. Enjoy the racing today and good luck if you are having a bet, hopefully I can find a few winners and the Saturday nap again!

LASTCHANCELUCAS 1545 CHESTER (nap) – (2nd – 4-1) really caught the eye last time out when finishing a very close sixth at Pontefract, despite running wide and being hampered in running. That run was much more like what he is capable of and will have more chance if the forecast rain falls too. Really confident about this ones chances today.

SECRETINTHEPARK 1455 NEWMARKET (nb) – (2nd – 13-2) won well here earlier in the season and looked a decent animal. Looked back to that level when third here last time. Today he is much better off in the weights than he was with the two infront of him last time, and that could prove pivotal.

MAGLIETTA FINA 1420 NEWMARKET (treble) – (unplaced) has some decent form in Italy, particularly on good ground. Has taken time to adapt to British racing judged on the last two runs. The rain that has fallen will help as I think last time the ground was a little quick. Has been kept on the same mark as the last run amd I think has a big chance judged on that today.

BLANC DE CHINE 1615 DONCASTER – (unplaced) has a very good strike rate and the application of a hood today should help the concentration further. Ultra consistent at Class 3 and 4 and has won on good and good to firm ground, has a good chance here today.

CORNISH PATH 1350 NEWMARKET – (unplaced) followed up her earlier Kempton success with a very encouraging second last time here. Has a chance to go one better today.

CHOOSEDAY 1450 RIPON – (4th – 6-1) has been running really well of late and won on this day at Chester last year! He is a dual 6f winner and ran very well at Glorious Goodwood last time in a hot race. Has a great chance from stall 1.

BLAINE 1530 RIPON – (unplaced) I need my head looking at with this one! However, I am still convinced this horse is much better than he's been showing! He won the Gimcrack last year and despite showing absolutely zip so far this year, he may be falling to a mark that befits his ability. Willing to give him one more go. BACCARAT was just getting going when he was badly hampered by the terrible fall involving Amy Ryan last time, and could run a big race. As could SECRET WITNESS, whose chances I really like, despite his draw.

My final two selections come at Newbury.

I'M YOUR MAN 1440 NEWBURY – (unplaced) suffered a head defeat last time to Lost in the Moment when conceding weight to that rival. They are both off level weights today and that could prove the telling fact as I think my selection will out battle his old foe in the closing stages

SOFT FALLING RAIN 1515 NEWBURY – (2nd – 9-4) this horse really is class, and has looked every bit a superstar this year. The Dubai form isn't that hot but I reckon he has way more class than the rivals today and should win this easy enough.

Saturday selections

This time last year I backed the enigmatic TIDAL BAY when he won the Bet365 Gold Cup and he has gone from strength to strength since then and I still reckon he would have had a decent chance in the Gold Cup too. I hope I have found another winner of this curtain raiser again today. Next week see's the first Classic's of the season and lets hope we have more positive news to report on rather than the Al Zarooni affair. The week after I'm back at Warwick races for their evening meeting which I cant wait for!

On to today here are my best three plus a few others that I'm putting my well earned crust on. All the best of you're having a flutter today!

BALTHAZAR KING 1550 SANDOWN (nap) – (PU) travelled pretty well in the National and if that hasn't taken too much out of him he has a great chance here. Horses that have run in the National have a decent record in this and so does Phillip Hobbs. The drying ground will be in his favour and he is a cracking each way bet. A steady run from the front will see him thereabouts.

WISHFUL THINKING 1440 SANDOWN (nb) – (3rd – 5-1) ran well in the Champion Chase behind the Aeroplane and despite a pretty poor course record he has displayed better performances this year. SANCTUAIRE won this so impressively last year but he is not the same horse this year and all the messing around with tactics on how to try and defeat Sprinter Sacre may have had a detrimental effect.

AL KAZEEM 1515 SANDOWN (treble) – (WON 9-4) won well first time out last year when I backed him, injury prevented any more runs, however, if he has fully recovered the form alone of that race should see him take this. He also has form over this distance too, big chance!

GRANDAD'S HORSE 1405 SANDOWN – (unplaced) this horse is cracking value in my opinion. He was a good novice and ran in some good races with 5 wins too. A lengthy absence needed to be overcome last time and he needed that run. He has better ground today and has a great chance.

INVINCIBLE HERO 1420 RIPON – (unplaced) ran well last year in four starts after a successful year prior to that. His comeback run at Doncaster was decent and that should have him spot on for this and is getting bags of weight from the others.

DAZINSKI 1455 RIPON – (unplaced) is back on his last winnnig mark today after a few disappointing runs last year. I followed him in all of those too, he has the abiltiy to take this and the ground will help, hopeful of a big run today!

UNMOOTHAJ 1705 LEICESTER – (WON – 6-5) his fourth in a pretty decent maiden last year is by way the best form here. He was a bit green that day in the final stages and lost third at the post. With more experience under the belt a reproduction of the run should take this comfortably.

ES QUE LOVE 1930 HAYDOCK – (unplaced) after tipping him up on here about a step up to a mile his performance in the Spring Cup was a little disappointing. A drop back to seven on this quicker track will help him today and he's,top weight for a reason.

Saturday – How many meetings?

I can't believe how many meetings there are today! Like reading war and peace trying to pick the best ones today. A lot to look forward to though, some excellent races today, including the St. Wilfred. Then we have the return of football of course. As much as I can't ge doung with the overpaid, pompous pillocks, I have to admit I do miss my footy on a Saturday.
We then move to the fantastic Ebor meeting next week and possibly the last time we will ever see Frankel on a racecourse. Can't wait to see him in all his majesty again.

On to today, a couple of Lucky 15's with my best three in there too. Good luck if you're having a flutter!

Lucky 15 Number 1
Absinthe 1615 Perth (nap) (2nd – 11/4)
Strong Suit 1505 Newbury (nb) (2nd – 9/4)
Our Jonathan 1530 Ripon (treble) (unplaced)
Fury 1555 Newmarket (NR)

Lucky 15 Number 2
Mont Ras 1550 Doncaster (3rd – 5-1)
Fleeting Smile 1415 Newmarket (3rd – 11/4)
Gassin Golf 1700 Doncaster (2nd – 2-1)
Brown Panther 1430 Newbury (2nd – 9/4)

Wednesday selections

The blog on Jubilee day produced a winner SEA FEVER (5-2) and a second OUR PHYLLI VERA (4-1). I was most disappointed though by the run of FLEXIBLE FLYER, on paper he should have won that race easy. However, we move on now.

Here are Wednesday’s tips, let’s hope this run continues.

CHOOSEDAY 1940 RIPON – (nap) (2nd – 14-1) has excuses on last times showing, he was badly hampered at the start. He has won over 6f so will stay no problems and I reckon the front two in the market may set this up for mine to swoop late.

LAATAFREET 1900 KEMPTON – (nb) (unplaced) second over 8f and then he won last time out over this distance. Big chance handicapping and Godolphin have a great record in this race.

CANTOR 2100 KEMPTON – (treble) (unplaced) won well over 11f earlier in the season. Hasn’t really kicked on from that and has proved a difficult ride. Back on the all weather this time may help, and if he settles will have a great chance.

Tuesday 29th May

Monday wasn’t too bad as the nap obliged as I thought it would do (ARTIGIANO 11-10). It actually went odds on at one point so the return wasn’t that bad. I always prefer to try and find better priced horses however. Yet, sometimes you have to opt for the sure thing. At least that win took my nap percentage up to 21.5%.

So on to Tuesday’s selections and hopefully a better priced few for you.

GHOSTWING 1430 CHEPSTOW – (nap) (unplaced) is potentially well handicapped and was a course and distance winner on good to firm here a couple of years ago. Has switched yards and must have a chance, and Sophie Doyle is a top female jock to steer him there.

JUST BOND 1540 RIPON – (nb) (unplaced) was a bit disappointing last time but that was on ground slower than suitable. Has won four timeson good to firm ground at a mile and been placed and been placed twelve times on good to firm at various distances around a mile. Must have a sniff.

EFISTORM 1520 LINGFIELD – (treble) (2nd – 5-1) is in a hot streak, won well at Windsor last week. Goes well here to, must have a chance of at least a place.

Sunday tips

Saturday on the blog was one to forget! Yet Saturday to watch was one to remember. Frankel showed once again what a magnificent animal he is. He is most certainly the best horse I have ever seen, and may ever see. The bit that astounds me is how easy everything is to him. His cruising speed is faster than anything else, so when you press the go button he just flies. I could watch him run every day of the year. We are very blessed to have him, so lets make the most of what will probably be his last season. If Coolmore can request €300,000 per session with Galileo, God only knows what Juddmonte will charge for Frankel. I wonder if he will produce awesome offspring too?
Here are Sunday’s tips
OSTLAND 1520 STRATFORD – (nap) (WON – 22-1) this horse I believe has the ability to win this race. His past few performances have been disappointing. I’m willing to give him another chance here. EACH WAY BET

HALLELUJAH 1510 RIPON – (nb) (2nd – 7-2) is 2 from 2 and goes well fresh and has won over the distance on soft ground. Trainer is in form and a top jock on board.
HONEYMEAD 1540 RIPON – (treble) (2nd – 7-1) overcame a bad draw to run well in second at Musselburgh last time. Will appreciate the ground, on a high mark but I have a feeling will run well. There is more to come from her!
I’m also going to put up TWO PANCAKES 1410 RIPON (3rd – 16-1) as an e/w bet. Declan Carroll is a trainer I follow and this horse has some speedy breeding and the yard have had a decent 2 y o this year already.
