I think it’s only fitting to dedicate the blog to another brave hero whop died what he loved doing best. RIP Many Clouds, what a horse! The way he won last Saturday typifies the horse he was. So sad but we have to remember these brave horses and celebrate what enjoyment they gave us and how they love doing what they do.

On to today and a few cracking races to get my head around.

The Edinburgh Handicap Chase at 205 is having its inaugural run and there could be a few national clues in it. ALVARADO has to win or run very well to give him a chance of getting in there big one but he’s a bit long in the tooth now I feel. JUST A PAR is no doubt being targeted at the bug race but he has to shoulder a big weight but this is a race he could certainly win off this mark and he will appreciate the ground. GONALSTON CLOUD has missed his chance I feel, he should have won last time but was given too much to do. He stays forever though and could be in the mix. AZURE FLY is one who has been very consistent at shorter trips and if he stays he could run another cracker and is a value each way bet in a competitive affair. I am opting for DANCING SHADOW though, he caught my eye when finally getting his head infront at Doncaster last time in a race that I really fancied COURT BY SURPRISE in. He will love the ground and Noel Fehily on board is a huge plus and I think he will run a big race.

I have been waiting for DIEGO DU CHARMIL to come out again. He hasn’t shown anything like his true self as when winning the Fred Winter last year. He didn’t cope with the ground last time at Ascot and never really got into the race which STERNRUBIN won before that. He has had a nice break and will really like the ground and I’m still convinced he is a very smart horse and I think he will take this today. A definite win bet.

The Betfred Mobile Heroes Hurdle (3:00) is a belting puzzle to solve. The trends indicate a big weight is a huge disadvantage so forget the first 5 on the card. BEHIND TIME is a worthy favourite and is being very well supported. He ticks lots of boxes but I want to see another run after his flop last time. He could be very decent and if he runs anything like his first outing he should take this but his last run still sits in my mind and casts a doubt. EL TERREMOTO won on heavy at Haydock in November and it will be veery testing today which could suit him. VALHALLA has been very consistent prior to Christmas over hurdles and if he takes to the ground could be a very good each way bet at 22-1. I can’t ignore ROLLING DYLAN though. He’s never been out of the first three and was just pipped by SHANTOU BOB last time when stepping up in trip. An 8lb rise is fair and he will love the ground and should run a big race.

The final chase on the card at Sundown is another little belter. OTAGO TRAIL has shown glimpses of his quality and will love the ground but he has a big weight to carry. ROCK THE KASBAH looks a progressive horse and if he stays, and if being a big IF, he could win this. I can’t get away from SANDY BEACH though, he ran very well behind OUR KAEMPFER and KRUZHLININ last time when I think the ground was a little too quick for him. This softer ground will help, he’s a strong traveller, and a good jumper and I can’t believe there is 14-1 about him in places. He is the bet of the day for me.

Sandown

skysports-life-boat-mona_3835240.jpg

Well last week must have killed many a pundit and lined the satchels of those bookies. Some very big priced winners didn’t help anyone last weekend. My selections were based on good ground and then the heavens opened, annoying to say the least. That persistent rain also chucked all form out of the window and certainly left me scratching my head. I thought ITV’s coverage was really good and it will only get better; people will never be happy however. They have to ‘dumb it down’ to try and increase people’s understanding and get people involved in racing. Their first Opening Show this morning was again very good and had some good pieces on there. I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop the programme.

On to today:

Ive been waiting for LIFEBOAT MONA to run again and wondering when the years would send her out again with the festival in mind. She was superb last time when waltzing clear of her rivals at Ascot in November. She has been raised a huge 13lbs to a mark of OR140 for that. I think she could and should improve further and she is entered in the mares hurdle at the festival. She up against some better rivals today in BRIERY QUEEN and DESERT QUEEN and they will make her work harder, but she should take this. I would be tempted to go for the other mares race at the festival if it was me and based around the mark she will probably be.

In the 32RED casino chase HOLLYWOODIEN really caught the eye at Wetherby last time on Boxing Day and he will improve again but an 8lb rise in the ratings may slow him down. DE FAOITHESDREAM was hoping up last time before falling and his jumping an let him down but I expect him to be going well from the front again. This is I think will set it up for GARDE LA VICTOIRE, who despite his weight, has the class to beat these. Two miles won’t be a problem and he was just pipped in the HALDON Gold Cup and ran well over behind YANWORTH last time. This is a drop in class and he should prevail.

COURT BY SURPRISE has been running well recently in defeat, both against his rivals. today and young horses. In a form line through LOOSE CHIPS, who beat him by 1/2 a length previously, he is 6lb better off at the weights for such a short distance defeat. He was running well when he didn’t really stay the trip when ROCKY CREEK won last time, this drop to 3 miles will help him. At Doncaster last time, youth and bette ground for me were the cause of his defeat and he was eased once they went away. I can’t ignore his mark of OR128, sandwiched between two previous winning marks. His could be real each way value in this.

Selections:

£5 win double LIFEBOAT MONA 9/4 (WILLIAM HILL) 1245 Sandown and GARDE LA VICTOIRE 2/1 (WILLIAM HILL) 150 Sandown (WON = £48.75)

£2.50 e/w COURT BY SURPRISE 28/1 (SPORTING BET) 300 Sandown (unplaced)

Aintree and Sandown

Another successful week on the blog last week following on from KRUZHLININ the week before. NATIVE RIVER was very impressive and looks a really potential superstar based on last week’s success. Looking forward to seeing how he develops during the year. On to this week, another cracking card at both Aintree and Sandown.

The Tingle Creek is the race of the day. SIRE DE GRUGY looked back to his best last time out and has won this twice and has a superb record here. UN DE SCEAUX is the favourite but I worry about his record first time out and think he now needs further. AR MAD is very interesting and has bags of scope. However, based on his last run, SIRE DE GRUGY gets the nod for me.

The Becher chase is a hell of a handicap and there are lots of trends that descimate the field. Paricularly around the age of a horse. ALVARADO has been backed all week and has a great record here, but I’m not sure this is long enough and the ground will suit. SILVERGROVE has lots of potential and shout be thereabouts after a decent run at Cheltenham last time. Alan King is starting to motor recently and ZIGA BOY, despite his age, ticks alot of boxes. He destroyed his rivals at Doncaster last year and if you can forgove the last two runs last year he has to have a chance. He’s warmed up well for this and he should be primed for a big run and I think this track will suit.

CORRIN WOOD has always been a smart horse and lost his way considerably with Donald McCain. He ran back to his best last time when eventually caught at Cheltenham by ANTEROS. This race is a huge drop in class and he is very well handicapped. The 7-2 price isnt going to last long and that could ge real value. He should breeze this.

FINGAL BAY is a very classy staying hurdler and his reappearance run was much better. This is a drop in class and despite his big weight he could and should be better than these. He is back on his last winning mark of OR148 when he won the Pertempts and that is surely his target this year. The claim from the jockey will certainly help his cause. Big run expected.

Selections :

£10 win CORRIN WOOD 245 Chepstow

£2.50 e/w FINGAL BAY 120 Sandown

£5 win SIRE DE GRUGY 3.00 Sandown

It was great to see OPENING BATSMAN run back to some form last time I did the blog and a 20-1 second wasn't a bad tip at all!

The festival is on the horizon and I'm sure like me you'll all be counting down the sleeps and starting to look at the form. I've got quite a few in the notebook ready to go and hopefully it will be another profitable week. Whatever happens it will, as always, be one hell of a spectacle. The weather appears to be warming up so watch out for those good ground horses at long last getting their ground!! It's been a while coming! I'll hopefully manage to get a blog done every night with a write up for every race! Bring it on!

On to today and here are my four :

COPPER KAY 3.45 SANDOWN (nap)
I flagged this mare up last time she ran on here and she did it very well. I think there is a lot more to come from her and she will be one for the festival next year. Dickie Johnson thinks she's the best mare he's ever sat on, a pretty good indictment. She got seriously hindered in this last year but has really come on since then. She will be too good for these despite giving weight all round, her stablemate may be the danger!

FLASHJACK 2.00 SANDOWN (nb)
Normally this race goes to one of the horses who is in the first few in the betting, I cant see that trend changing today. My selection won well last time at Towcester and comes here as an improving type, with only a 3lb rise for the last success. I think there is more to come and interestingly Dickie chooses this one over the stablemate, who he has a good relationship with that one's owners. This must have a better chance. If the ground was better I'd be finding it difficult to split ALCALA and CHIC THEATRE but I dont think they'll be involved with it being this soft.

CLAYTON 3.10 SANDOWN (treble)
Was a decnt flat horse and got to a mark of OR104 in that sphere. He has slowly but surely started to improve and understand what is required over obstacles. He has two good runs behind him on testing ground and gets in here off a feather weight. He receiving nearly two stones off RAYVIN BLACK and will ground like this and the speed of the race that will count in his favour. The pace should suit his flat speed and I expect to see him burst through towards the end.

KAYF HAMPSHIRE 2.05 LIMERICK
I don't normally venture to Ireland but this mare went into my notebook on the off chance last year. She is slowly getting what is required and race well, but well behind CASHEARD LADY last time. That one went on to be second behind LIMINI next time who's the hot favourite for one of the mares races at the festival. That is decent form and with the ground being testing again, I'm hoping today is finally the day for her to lose her maiden tag.

A couple of near misses last week on the blog. Fingal Bay ran well I thought but Smad Place was awesome. Can't put as much detail into the blog today as normal as I'm off to play footy shortly in a cup match….early kick off!

I've changed the style of bet for the blog too and will be putting a £1 Lucky 15 on our selections and will put the profit/loss up accordingly.

Good luck today if you're having a bet!

GOONYELLA 1340 AINTREE (nap)
He had a cracking season last year and has been raised alot in terms of his mark since running poorly in this last year. I've opted for him as I think this will take alot of getting today, and the wind will add to it. His jumping has improved and he must have a sniff.

SIRE DE GRUGY 1500 SANDOWN (nb)
He is the best rated of these and despite his poor track record since injury he still has the ability to win this. He has a great record here and the yard is in much better form. He has chucked in a couple of bad jumps recently and will need to be on it through the railway fences. I just think he'll do it today.

QUALANDO 1445 AINTREE (treble)
Smart horse and the ground will be no issue for him. I think he'll run a big race today and will improve further for the last run. You can't dismiss a horse like this.

AWAYWITHTHEGREYS 1400 CHEPSTOW
Has won twice here over course and distance and on heavy ground. He will love this testing run today and had a good few decent runs on the flat. Expecting a big run from him today.

AP McCoy’s Farewell

Its the last day we will see the greatest sportsman ever in action! Words have been said, printed and tweeted since we got the retirement news. There are nothing but superlatives being said about The Champ and rightly so! To me I just arise Sir Anthony! A legend, a role model, an ambassador and a hero!
This is the last NH blog of the season and me and my Dad will reset the scores next week ready for the flat season proper. He's up in winning weeks 10-9 but I'm ahead on profit. I've not put anything on the blog for a while that's run well and I'm hoping that changes today!!

Here are my selections :

DUKE OF LUCCA 1550 SANDOWN (nap) (Unplaced = -£5.00)
He's officially well in here and is on the same mark (OR137) that he was when winning well at Aintree last time. He's also got less weight on his back and I think this step up in trip will help. The Hobbs yard are back in form and Johnson knows how to ride this fella and the horse's battling qualities will help him out for sure. It's a hell of a race but I think he has a ceacking chance.

VIBRATO VALTAT 1515 SANDOWN (nb) (unplaced = -£5.00)
Looked a smart prospect earlier in the year and has struggled with how the race has been run. He tried to take on the favourite in the Arkle and then the race at Aintree was run too steadily. Today the race should be run at a fast tempo which should suit and the ground will also.

CAPO ROSSO 1420 HAYDOCK (treble) (2nd – 14-1 = £8.75)
I've followed this horse for a while and the one thing he loves is quicker ground and to get at them from the front. He'll get that today and may be hard to pass at Haydock. I still think he is a 100+ rated horse and is still only five. His couple of all weather runs will have sharpened him up for this and I think he will run a good race at a big price.

NAKUTI 1615 LEICESTER (unplaced = -£5.00)
Really caught my eye when behind in a Listed race at Kempton last time. She looked like the trip was a little too far for her last time and this drop back to 7f plus her weight allowance will help. Ryan Moorerode her that day and is back in the plate today. That run will give her the fitness edge over ALJAMAHEER and COULSTY I think.

My Dad's selections are :
LIL ROCKERFELLER 1400 SANDOWN (WON 5-1 = £15.62)
VIBRATO VALTAT 1515 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

Sandown

So, the final blog before the festival! Cant wait for Tuesday and I will be doing a blog every day for the festival. I will make sure I post the blog the night before for everyone to have a read – I hopeful of a few winners. I've picked out a few who I fancy – HOLYWELL (of course!), POLLY PEACHUM, MA FILLUELE being a couple. Before I start the serious study we have the Imperial Cup to tackle today and a few decent races at Wolverhampton. If my four come in today I will have a right kitty for the week, they are decent prices and I expect good runs! Thanks to Fran (@Riosrider) for the photo for the blog again. Below is the #twittergamble for the boys, we'll do one of these for each day of the festival too.

#Twittergamble
@Tonythetyke – WHISTLE DIXIE 1545 SANDOWN
@Liamkenniford – AIGLE DE LA SEE 1400 SANDOWN
@Fernando_RFC2 – CHOOKIE ROYALE 1415 WOLVES
@DazGilbert1 – BALLYHEIGUE BAY 1435 SANDOWN

Here are my selections :
GASSIN GOLF 1510 SANDOWN (nap) (3rd – 25-1 = £15.62)
Came second in this last year and is 11lbs higher than that today. I'm putting a line through his last run at Ascot in the Ladbroke, he never got in the race and was rightly pulled up. Interestingly despite how terrible that run was the handicapper hasn't reduced his mark, he knows he's a better horse than that as do I! Dickie Johnson rides him and he wouldn't be on him if he didn't think he had a sniff. Dickie's record on him is 2,2,3,4,2,2. He was a decent horse on the flat for Sir Mark Prescott and he's a horse I've tracked. He has a race like this in him! He has yet to score over hurdles but I do think he's smart and the better ground will help today. I'm expecting a big run!

CHIDSWELL 1400 SANDOWN (nb) (unplaced = -£5.00)
Has been performing consistently well and is very interesting on his handicap debut. His trainer also has a decent record with handicap debutants. He has been beaten twice in novice events, the last one was a decent contest and he was beaten by a smart sort in CLEAN SHEET. Who on the back of that has beengiven a mark of OR135. He could run a big race at a good price.

AL THAKIRA 1415 WOLVERHAMPTON (treble) (3rd – 4-1 = £2.50)
She has decent form at 7f and ran well on a few occasions last year. She needs to be ridden patiently and she may need a bit of luck. She has the proven class in the race and has a good record fresh. I think she will have too much for these today.

COPPER KAY 1545 SANDOWN (Unplaced = -£5.00)
This is hot little race and a lot of money is going on the top two. My selection justified favouritism last time at Warwick in a nice little contest and there will be more to come from her. The form hasn't been franked but I liked what I saw that day and think she will run well at a decent price.

My Dad's selections are:

Sandown, Ffos Las

Morning all from a very snowy Sheffield! Had a right downpour of the white stuff this week! Bloody hate it. By the kind permission of Fran, who you can all follow on twitter @Riosrider2, I have the wonderful photo of our big price near miss last week, BIG FELLA THANKS, to say I was gutted about that was an understatement – however I was pleased he ran to what I said in my blog. Please give Fran a follow, she has taken some amazing photos and regularly tweets them. She has kindly given me the permission to use them from now on when typing my blog. Thanks Fran! Last week was unlucky as stated above and I thought the nap VAGO COLLONGES was going to walk his race too coming up the straight! Interesting to see where he goes next and over shorter. Have found a couple of horses I really like today and hopefully they will give us another shout for our money. As always I wish you luck with whichever horse carries your well earned coins as we continue to strive to defeat our old foe! Good luck guys!

#twiiter gamble. The boys are back for another week, lets hope they bring in the big one! Give them a follow too.

Here are my selections for today :

VIA SUNDOWN 1535 SANDOWN (nap) (PU = -£5.00)
He beat BENVOLIO off a one pound higher mark this his mark today last year on heavy ground. That's pretty smart form considering BENVOLIO'S exploits this year and his targets. My guy ran in the Hennessy and then in a Listed race at Ascot behind THE YOUNG MASTER, all of which were too high targets for him and he was found wanting. He is back in a more suitable race today and has a very nice mark and I believe a cracking chance. He was fancied last time at Kempton but unseated and I hope he can jump soundly today! That day when ARKDILLY WITNESS won my guy was a pound higher in the weights than the winner, today he is 7lbs better off with that rival – that could prove key! I am confident of a good run but am mindful of CANTLOW too – he could reproduse today if it's a going day for him.

IMPERIAL LEADER 1500 SANDOWN (nb) (PU = -£5.00)
Yet to win a race since his novice hurdle success but he has ran in some very good, competitive races. His second behind IRISH SAINT on unsuitable heavy ground off a mark 4lbs higher than today is pretty decent form. He then ran third behind FINGAL BAY at Exeter off a 5lb higher mark than today. Can you see why he's fancied today? Interestingly the ground is better today which I think will help as will the slight drop back in trip, he has the stamina in the bag and could go at them early. Great chance to get off the mark this season.

PUFFIN BILLY 1405 FFOS LAS (treble) (PU = -£5.00)
A smart horse and I like to follow horse who go back over hurdles after being jumping and after a fall. They grow in confidence as the race progreses and this guy could do the same. He is 7lbs lower in the ratings today than when being beaten by MELODIC RENDEZVOUS in heavy ground a couple of years ago. He was also a creditable 5th behind CHAMPAGNE FEVER at the Festival that year, that is much better form than anything else, bar one, see below. The ground will be testing and people are talking about low weights being needed but my guy is use to shouldering big weights and running well. He carried 11st 11lbs when getting beaten by MELODIC RENDEZVOUS and has 9lbs less today. Class is class as I always say and the stable and jockey are going well. My twitter friend @Pirate_B has talked me into a saver on HIDDEN IDENTITY too. She also has smart form and is a crazy price after being not too far behind the likes of QUEVEGA at the festival. Give Darrell a follow here

ELY BROWN 1445 WETHERBY (unplaced = -£5.00)
Another one starting out over hurdles for the season after going chasing last. He's top weight and the class horse by a mile for me. He is dropped into class 3 company for this after running in Class 1 chases last season. He beat MILLBOROUGH and GREEN FLAG here off a mark of OR140. Course form is key here! His last hurdle win came at Aintree when he best GAUVAIN on good ground over this trip off a 4lb lower mark. He has also beaten HOLYWELL on soft ground at Warwick and with Charlie Deutsch taking a valuable 7lbs off in weight today he has to have a chance. Our old friend from the other week JOIN THE CLAN goes again but he's been raised a massive 11lbs by the handicapper for that and it wouldnt surprise me that the rise is too much and they take it steady with him with his mark for Cheltenham the priority. Class is class – come on Ely!

My Dad's selections are :
POLAMCO 1500 SANDOWN (PU = -£5.00)
LITTLE BOY BORU FFOS LAS 1405 (PU = -£5.00)

myWPEdit Image

Well what a start to the New Year Cheltenham was! The nap MON PARRAIN (25-1) went in as well as the nb PTIT ZIG (evens) and ROCK ON RUBY (5-2) brought a tasty profit on my Lucky 15!!! I know some of you had MON PARRAIN too and just wanted to say thanks to all of you who made some nice comments via Twitter on Thursday, much appreciated. I am bloody relieved to be honest, it was ages since I had put a good one up here!

So on to the first Saturday of the New Year and it isn’t great to be honest! I’m writing this on Friday as I’m treating Mrs GB to a weekend away for her birthday so will get limited time on Saturday. We’re off to pick her birthday present and then staying in the hotel we got married at, Whitley Hall, near Sheffield, it’s a beautiful place and would encourage any of you to stay there if ever you are up my neck of the woods.

The TwitterGamble guys have gone for

@Tonythetyke Somchine 1405 Wincanton

@Fernando_RFC2 Unioniste 1535 Sandown

@LiamKenniford Earthmoves 1440 Wincanton

@DazGilbert1 Walser 1415 Newcastle

So, good luck everyone again! Let’s hope we have another profitable day!

VOLT FACE 1440 WINCANTON (NAP) (unplaced = -£5.00)

I’ve been waiting for this one since @tonytheTyke tipped him up in our #twittergamble the other month. He cruised into contention and looked all over the winner but then didn’t pick up at all and ended up finishing third. The ground was heavy that day which I think was the main factor, plus it was the first run of the season for him. He’s been raised 3lbs to OR128 for that but I think he will take this and kick on to better things. Kieron Edgar takes a valuable 5lbs off too.

REBEL REBELLION 1515 WINCANTON (NB) (unplaced = -£5.00)

Another class horse dropped in grade and off top weight! He’s slowly dropping to more a reasonable mark, and is only 3lbs higher than he was when competing in top level novice chases last year. He did run off OR150 back in April at Aintree. His mark of OR143 tomorrow is not bad and with the apprentice jockey taking 7lbs off in his claim that could prove to be very valuable. I thought he ran well in the Grand Sefton for a while and had the likes of HUNT BALL and DOLATULO behind. He could make a mockery of this!

TRIOLO D’ALENE 1535 SANDOWN (treble) (3rd 16-1 = £10.00)

The last time this fella ran in a class 2 handicap he smashed JUNIOR by 4 and a half lenghts off a mark of OR139. Since then he has won a Hennessy and ran in both the Gold Cup and Grand National. He is 4lbs lower today than his Gold Cup mark, he will enjoy the ground and the trip will be fine. He has a lot of weight to carry but as I always say in these handicaps, class is class and he’s not top weight for nowt! My only concern is how terrible the yard’s horses have been running! UNIONISTE has to have a great chance but I’m not sure it will be soft enough? BERTIE BORU showed what fight and determination he has after staying on to win well last time. A fascinating race!

AMORE ALATO 1500 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

Ran in some good races last year and has some decent form in behind the likes of LAC FONTANA and IRVING who have both gone on to better things. He is nowhere near that standard but is a decent handicapper and he showed that last time when just being pipped by a well handicapped SNAKE EYES. Interesting that McCoy is on board today, having beat him. I think McCoy’s pushing and driving style will suit too. Hopeful of another good show.

My Dad’s selections are :

The Bandit hasn’t got the time to write an in-depth blog today. Taking my girls swimming, daddy duties call! Its been a busy old week with no other than OFSTED rolling up to the Bandit’s workplace! We had some positive news however!

The Twiiter gamble from my fellow horse aficionados is below and I will update it later today

@DazGilbert1 GODS OWN 1500 SANDOWN

@TonytheTyke LIGHTENIN ROD 1310 WETHERBY

@LiamKenniford DORMELLO MO 1425 SANDOWN

@Fernando_RFC2 BAILEYS CONCERTO 1300 SANDOWN

My selections today are as follows :

MON PARRAIN 1330 AINTREE (NAP)(unplaced = -£5.00) what a ridiculous price this fella is. Ran really well here when second a couple of years ago and I had him when he won well at Cheltenham. His recent spin will have brought him on loads and I’ve always thought he was a proper horse. The slightly better ground will hep him too.

HINTERLAND 1500 SANDOWN (NB) – (3rd 12-1 = £7.50) this horse I have always liked too and he has been a bit hit and miss lately. Nicholls has a great record in this and Fehily on board is a real plus. He likes it here and I think he will run a big race.

HOLYWELL 1440 AINTREE (TREBLE) – (FELL = -£5.00) my old favourite! His recent spin at Carlisle will have sharpened him up and with Richie back on board he will taker this today despite the stable being a bit quiet.

ROLLING ACES 1515 AINTREE (4th 8-1 = £4.50) ran a cracker last time behind WISHFULL THINKING and I said then to lump on the next time he is out. Drops in class and will take the beating in this today!

My dads selections are :

Dormello Mo 1425 Sandown (unplaced = -£5.00)

Somersby (2nd 8-1 = £4.50)
