Newbury and Warwick

Good evening everyone! Yep I'm doing the blog on Friday night as tomorrow I am at my school again doing the final dress rehearsal for our performance of Our Day Out next week. I'm hoping Warwick survives the chill as I have two selections there tomorrow! It has been a tough week for the Bandit and the family this week. On Sunday I had to take our beloved cocker spaniel Freddie to the vet to be put down. It came so quick, on Saturday he had started to breath a little funny and cough as if he had something stuck in his throat. It got worse on Sunday and we found a large tumour in his mouth/throat. The vet thought it was cancerous and he was struggling to breath. Broke my heart doing it but I couldn't let him be in pain. Rest in peace little fella!

The photo for the blog is courtesy of Fran @Riosrider2 again. Give her a follow!
Last week was a complete shocker for my selections too, I was quietly confident of a few of them and couldn't believe how poorly they ran. To be fair the ground was shocking but I can't make excuses my horses just weren't good enough. Saturday is a cracking card at Newbury and the racing at Warwick is decent too. The festival beckons everyone! Whatever you are backing tomorrow with your well earned cash – good luck! Lets hope we take a step closer to beating the old foe!

The twitter gamble boys have opted for the following tomorrow – their big gamble will land soon!

@Tonythetyke Nightline 1300 Warwick
@DazGilbert1 Barters Hill 1640 Newbury
@Fernando_RFC2 Vibrato Valtat 1405 Warwick
@LiamKenniford Milan bound 1350 Newbury

Here are my selections :

SIGN OF VICTORY 1535 NEWBURY (nap)
Won first time out this year at Ascot more or less on the bridle and he looked very smart. He was then pitched in a little too deep amd was put in his place, but finished a creditable fourth, to FAUGHEEN. He has to carry alot of weight in the race, but he has that because of what he has shown. The form of his Ascot race has swung it for me. He beat DAWALAN that day who has since gone on and won twice and looks decent. BARADARI finished third that day and he obliged the other week. You can even go further down the field at Ascot that day day and find KILCOOLEY who rompted home at Haydock too. I like to find a decent priced horse in a competitive race and I think I have found it for tomorrow. He's probably better than this and will shown it tomorrow for my money.

BALGARRY 1535 NEWBURY
With Sign of Victory now a non-runner I will go for this fella to come up trumps in this race. He ran so well last time after such a long lay off last time and he may now step up today.

CONEYGREE 1425 NEWBURY (nb)
This fella just keeps impressing me, and he seems to get better and better. He has been raised a further 6lbs for his last success to a mark of OR153. That is still a little less than some of his rivals in this and he needs to improve again to trouble HOUBLON DES OBEAUX and UNIONISTE. My guy travels so well in his races though and hasn't put a foot wrong. My question against the other two is whether the ground is soft enough for them. I'm hoping my guy jumps with the same zest and enthusiasm again and he'll give them a good run. Cracking little race.

UNCLE JIMMY 1335 WARWICK (treble)
On of my old favourites! He won the Pertempts Qualifier here last year when I napped him on the blog beating GRAND VISION. He returned this season with an impressive defeat of SOUND INVESTMENT at Newton Abbott and followed that up with a second to PECKHAMECHO at Aintree. Interestingly ROLLING MAUL was well down the field that day and he went on to win well at Cheltenham on New Year's Day. He will like te ground and should make the transition to the bigger obstacles. He ran a stinker last time in November over hurdles and I find it really interesting that they have used that time to prep him for fences and not stick to hurdling.

DORMOUSE 1625 WARWICK
He has won 3 out of 6 here at Warwick and put in a grand show when defeating REGGIN PERRIN at Lingfield in November. Has flattered to deceive a little since but his marked has dropped back to OR118 and the jockey booking of Paul Townend really catches my eye. His mark has fluctuated between OR115 to OR120 over the past year and his mark is doable and he has carried big weight to success in the past.

Right after a week off last week due to The Bandit being on a bender in Leeds the blog returns with what can only be described as a fantastic day of racing. The likes of FAUGHEEN, THE NEW ONE, SILVINIACO CONTI, MENORAH all on show, sit back and enjoy the best that National Hunt can throw at us today if nothing else. The previous blog bore a little fruit for us at long last with POLLY PEACHUM (6-1) showing us what a talented mare she is, one to watch for the future. I also thought OPENING BATSMAN ran so much better and showed some of his old sparkle and I’ll be interested to see where he goes next and interestingly the handicapper raised him 3lbs for that run.

So on to today, firstly I asked some of my twitter followers to put up their best bet of the day, this was the result. Make sure you put a few shekels on this and give each of them a follow if you’re a twitterati.

Shotavodka 1535 Haydock from @Tonythetyke (unplaced)

Fletchers Flyer 1225 Ascot from @Fernando_RFC2 (WON 11/10)

Volnay de Thaix 1425 Haydock from @LiamKenniford (4th – 3/1)

Silviniaco Conti 1500 Haydock from @DazGilbert1 (WON – 100/30)

@Theknibbler also came in for Taquin de Seuil 1500 Haydock

Let’s hope my fellow twitter friends show us the way!!

UNCLE JIMMY 1425 HAYDOCK (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) this guy has been on my radar for a few years and he has been performing admirably. This is a step up for him but the trip and the ground will suit him, he won’t mind the soft underfoot conditions and if anything I think it will bring out more improvement in him and he reminds me of HOLYWELL a few years ago. He is a ridiculous price and is a cracking each way chance, but I reckon he will in it. His run at Aintree behind PECKHAMECHO was a good comeback and will have set him up nicely for this. He also defeated SOUND INVESTMENT by 4 and a half lengths at Newton Abbot in early October and look at how impressive he was over the bigger obstacles last time out. Lump on I reckon he will take this today!

TAQUIN DE SEUIL 1500 HAYDOCK (NB) – (PU = -£5.00) I really do like this horse and he performance was little scratchy in the Charlie Hall but he has always looked a class horse for me and one that will compete at the top level. Having Geraghty in the saddle will help steady him and his patient style will suit. The cheekpieces will also aid his cause to and I think today is the day that he shows his full potential. I think Cue Card will flatten out up the hill and he will battle it out with SILVINIACO CONTI for the honours

AL FEROF 1405 ASCOT (TREBLE) – (WON – 5-2 = £7.81) he is without doubt a class horse and even though Nichols hasn’t been that bullish about him I still think he will take this. He goes well fresh and ultimately has Ruby back on board who knows him inside out. The ground should be fine and if he is being aimed to be tip top for Kempton then really he has to win this to have any chance there! He has won the past three seasons on his reapperance!

EMPERORS CHOICE 1245 HAYDOCK – (2nd – 11/2 = £3.43) loves the mud big time! Has top weight and you never know what you may get but boy can he paddle through the mud! He ran a cracker behind RIGADIN DE BEAUCHENE here in February in a much better race than this and before that beat FIREBIRD FLYER in heavy ground over 3 and a half miles. That horse rompted in yesterday so he has strong form in the bag. I’m hoping he has too much ability for some of his rivals today. Not top weight for nowt!

My Dad’s selections are :

LYVIUS 1315 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)

BIG EASY 1425 HAYDOCK (2nd – 13-2 = £4.06)

SILVINIACO CONTI 1500 HAYDOCK (WON 100/30 = £10.41)

ULCK DU LIN 1515 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)

Aintree Day One

myWPEdit Image

Aintree has come around again faster than you can say AHYAKNOWYERSELF. It should be a cracking few days and I’m even more happy as there has been and should be rain for old Tidal Bay. My each way ante post bet of 25-1 is tucked away ready! I also like the other Wylie horse PRINCE DE BEAUCHENE who has been a favourite for the race the past few years and has snuck in quietly this year under the radar! I backed him when Ruby Walsh hardly moved a muscle on him in his last race at Thurles and he’s worth a saver too. Anyway on to tomorrow!

JUVENILE HURDLE 1400

ACTIVIAL (NB) (unplaced) is my selection, he was put in his place by CALIPTO earlier in the year but was very good last time beating COMMISSIONED and the biggest plus for him is he is fresh! Cheltenham takes a lot out of horses and with him being laid out for this it may just help. I’m not sure CALIPTO would have won even without his irons slipping but its going to be a cracking race whatever.

BETFRED BOWL 1430

SILVINIACO CONTI (NAP) (WON 9-4) has the class in the race and I’m sure if he would have been taken left with the others in the Gold Cup he may have prevailed. Whilst DYNASTE was impressive at the festival I think my selection will have too much and I still think he stays this trip. Lump on!

DOOM BAR AINTREE HURDLE 1505

ROCK ON RUBY (2nd – 10-1) is the horse who will take this returned to hurdles. Doom Bar is one of my favourite ales, and ROCK ON RUBY is one of my favourite horses too. A good match, I’m not worried about his return to hurdles as he has always been class in that sphere and despite his huge blunder at Cheltenham he was looked after once that had happened and he may take this.

FOX HUNTER CHASE

PENTIFFIC (unplaced) is my selection in a race I know not a lot about.

RED RUM HANDICAP

KINGS GREY (unplaced) takes my eye here, her has ran well here in the past and has dropped to his last winning mark. Must run well.

MANIFESTO NOVICES CHASE

OSCAR WHISKY (2nd – 7-4) is the one for me here in what looks like a cracking renewal and early faller last time but he has solid form before that.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HURDLE

UNCLE JIMMY (TREBLE) (unplaced) was one of my best bets at the festival and he was getting into the race before making a huge blunder two out. He may not have got anywhere near as he was too far off the pace earlier in the race. He’s still on what I think is a reasonable mark of 140 and he should run another good race.

Cheltenham Day 3

myWPEdit Image

Day two was a good one. Firstly I take my hat off to SIRE DE GRUGY as I didn’t think he was good enough, boy did he prove me wrong. Brilliant for all the connections too. The blog went well on day two with wins for FAUGHEEN (6-4), BALTHAZAR KING (4-1) and SILVER CONCORDE (16-1). Hope you got on a few of them.

Here are Thursday’s selections – good luck if you’re having a flutter!

JLT NOVICES CHASE

FELIX YONGER is a worthy favourite and he should like the ground despite some of his victories coming on softer ground. The way Walsh and Mullins have started the last two days you wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in. DOUBLE ROSS has put some gallant performances in here and should be thereabouts turning in. WONDERFUL CHARM will be in with a shout and his trainer will be wanting to get off the mark. OSCAR WHISKY and TAQUIN DE SEUIL have had a few ding-dongs this year with the former getting the best last time on softer ground and level weights. I’ve opted for TAQUIN though as I think he will come on for the dryer ground and will out battle Henderson’s charge towards the line.

SELECTION – TAQUIN DE SEUIL (WON 7-1)

DAD’S SELECTION – FELIX YONGER (unplaced)

PERTEMPS NETWORK FINAL

This was the scene of HOLYWELL’s victory last year and I’ve got a similar horse with a similar profile and the same mark. UNCLE JIMMY ran very well behind THOMAS CRAPPER here in November in a race that’s form is pretty strong. He then went on to win the race that HOLYWELL was second in last year of a two pound lower mark. He has been raised another 7 lb to an official rating of 140. The same mark HOLYWELL won this off last year. He is a similar traveller to HOLYWELL and is game too and will be staying on all the way to the line. The extra distance really helped him at Warwick and I think the better ground will suit him too. I’m very hopeful of this one running a very good race! Of the others FINGAL BAY obviously oozes class but has a big weight to carry, MICKIE would need it softer. GRAND VISION came second to UNCLE JIMMY and was ten pounds worse off at Warwick. He’s only two pounds worse off in this and could be my selections biggest threat! I will also put a little shout in for SO FINE, who’s course and distance run behind SUNNYHILLBOY here earlier in the year caught my eye. Mr Hobbs is mob handed here!

SELECTION – UNCLE JIMMY (NB) (unplaced)

RYANAIR CHASE

This race is always a cracker and it should be again! AL FEROF has bags of class and has a good record here so should run well. BENEFFICIENT will go over favourite based on his victory last year and reposes with DYNASTE. MEDERMIT was going places the other year before getting injured and if back to his best he could be a real threat at a big price. I’m opting for BOSTON BOB though. He was running a big race last year when falling in the RSA chase and he ran well in behind BRINDISI BREEZE a couple of years ago on good ground. Today will be his day!

SELECTION – BOSTON BOB (unplaced)

DAD’S SELECTION – BENEFFICIENT (PU)

LADBROKES WORLD HURDLE

I cannot believe I have just got 4-1 for BIG BUCK’S. Now I know he has been injured but think about it people. A train wouldn’t have beat him before the injury and I thought he ran a brilliant race last time when just being pipped by KNOCKARA BEAU and AT FISHERS CROSS on ground not ideal on his first run in ages! He just got tired, it would have been like running in treacle for him. Slap all your cash on him, he’s still the best and will put ANNIE POWER in her placer tomorrow. He will love the better ground, loves the hill and just get ready for the crowd to roar! Come on a bring home the BUCKS!

SELECTION – BIG BUCKS (NAP) (unplaced)

DAD’S SELECTION – ANNIE POWER (2nd – 11-8)

BYRNE GROUP PLATE

COLOUR SQUADRON could finally run a big race at the festival and should be thereabouts. JOHNS SPIRIT has had on hell of a season and Richie McLernon knows him inside out, but has he had too many tough races? FIRTH OF THE CLYDE could give the north another big success and SHANGANI has hit form at the right time. I’m opting for BLESS THE WINGS though. He’s on a cracking mark and is 5 lbs lower in the ratings than his last success and a full 9 lbs lower than his run at the festival last year. With the better ground suiting and the addition of first time bilkers to sharpen him up he is a very appealing each way proposition.

SELECTION – BLESS THE WINGS (unplaced)

DAD’S SELECTION – JOHNS SPIRIT (4th – 9-1)

FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CUP

The amateur riders get their turn in the lime light as the curtain comes down on day three. TWIRLING MAGNET has caught my eye, goes well fresh and must have a big chance. There are several horses that are particularly well handicapped based on old form. QUINZ being one of them! NIGHT ALLIANCE has been excellent this year but pulled up last ti e at Haydock in a better race, has he the class? Not sure, but if he puts that run behind him he could worry a few over the last. I’m opting for another well handicapped horse PROBLEMA TIC has shown he has some class, particularly on better ground. He bounced away at Perth last summer beating the likes of MERRION SQUARE and BLACK MULLIGAN. Of his 8 wins 4 of them have come in good ground and he is now a pound lower in the ratings than the Perth success. With the ground likely to dry out a little more he has a great chance in my opinion. Or he will show his other side, not go at all and be pulled up! Let the equine gods decide!

SELECTION – PROBLEMA TIC (unplaced)

Good luck if you’re having a flutter again, enjoy the spectacle and lets hope we fleece the bookies!

Ascot and Haydock

Well the blog is well and truely on a roll! With the last two winning naps Indian Jack (5-1) and Uncle Jimmy (15-2) obliging! It has seen me turn the tables on my dad and pull it back to 3-2 in the competition, although I'm now in more profit than him! To be fair today's ground is going to be shocking but there are some cracking races on offer! Let's hope we can maintain our form and find more profit for everyone. If you're having a flutter, good luck!

CEASAR MILAN 1605 ASCOT (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) this horse was bought up by the Stewart/Wiley connections as a potential smart thing and went off a hot favourite first time out. He bled and finished last that day but then re-appeared encouraging behind DEPUTY DAN last time out. We saw what he did last week and this horse will improve further for that run, will enjoy the ground and I think is one for our notebooks!

CAROLE'S SPIRIT 1350 ASCOT (NB) – (2nd – 3-1 = £1.88) his horse has done nothing but improve and cosily put away As I Am last time out. The ground should suit her and she should stay. She has a real touch of class and I think she will beat Mickie. I have backed MICKIE the last two times but I think despite the favour in the weights that she has done too much too soon and this will be a step too far.

VALOROSO 1515 HAYDOCK (TREBLE) – (unplaced = -£5.00) ran really well last time when just pipped by Ma Filleule at Kempton. Comes here with that form and other good form behind. This is going to be a real slog and the light weight will help and despite this being a step up I think this horse is better than his current mark. He's a cracking each way bet and will run a good race to at least place.

THOMAS CRAPPER 1425 ASCOT – (unplaced = -£5.00) he steps back here in trip after the last run proved too far. There is some really solid form in his book. He win at Cheltenham in November was impressive and the likes of WHISPER and UNCLE JIMMY were behind him that day. My only worry is the ground. Robin Dickin said he avioded the Lanzarote because the the horse doesn't like the ground too soft! Today it's even worse! We shall see! Also think IRISH SAINT could run a big race in this. (WON 6-1 – grrrr!)

I am also having a little treble on these three GRANDIOSO 1500 ASCOT (2nd – 4-1) HIDDEN CYCLONE 1535 ASCOT and MELODIC RENDEZVOUS 1440 HAYDOCK (WON – 7-4)

Here are my Dad's four for today :

KNIGHT OF PLEASURE 1425 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)
KNIGHT ALLIANCE 1515 HAYDOCK (unplaced = -£5.00)
THEATRICAL STAR 1500 ASCOT (unplaced = -£5.00)
SOMERSBY 1535 ASCOT (fell = -£5.00)

FATHER £53.04

Kempton and Warwick

Well this week was a bit of a shock to the system after two weeks off but The Bandit soon got back into the swing of things! Last week was a cracker for the blog with my nap INDIAN JACK winning at 5-1 and CHEVISE coming at 20-1 givnig me some real profit and saw me finally winning a week over my old man in our little head to head. He also had a cracking week with two winners and 2 placed. Lets hope we can continue the good form of recent weeks today. The current standing are FATHER 3-1 SON. With our total profits from a £2.50 each way stake being
Father = £93.04 profit
Son = £77.56 profit

UNCLE JIMMY 1425 WARWICK (NAP) – (WON – 17-2 = £23.44) He has two wins on soft to his name and for me he has been crying out for this longer trip. People think he may not stay I reckon it will bring even more out of him. He reminds me of HOLYWELL who I put up in this last year and was pipped by ELY BROWN. He takes a bit of a hold but is always there staying on at the end. He beat ROYAL NATIVE at Fontwell over 23f and I think today you will see him stay on over the last flight here and catch up in the run in. He could be my Cheltenham horse this year as HOLYWELL was last year, he would need to be competitive in this though. Great chance today!

HOME RUN 1440 KEMPTON (NB) – (unplaced – £5.00) he ran a cracker last time behind SAPHIR DU RHEU and I think he could reverse the placing today on this softer ground. At the weights he is 8lbs better off today than last time for an 8 length success. Harry Derham takes 5lbs off for his claim though but I just think Home Run has been improving more and more and this track on the ground will play to his strengths. He has only gone up a pound on the ratings compared to Saphir's 15! I think he is better handicapped than his foe and I think Saphir needs laying in this today.

DUNOWEN POINT 1355 WARWICK (TREBLE) – (unplaced -£5.00) has been dropped 3lbs in the ratings for his poor show at Aintree. I think he just didn't fire that day on a specialist track. He is now only a pound higher than when defeated by CLOUDY TOO at Wetherby on soft last year. He gave CLOUDY TOO 5 lbs on the weights that day and that horse is now rated 13lbs higher than my choice in the ratings. If he reproduces that form he will wipe the floor with these today I reckon. The ground should be fine for him and he has a great chance in my opinion.

SWNYMOR 1550 KEMPTON – (unplaced – £5.00) A bit of a forgotten horse is this one! Won very well last year and was moving to win when asked too much at the last flight at Chepstow and he fell. That destroyed the rest of his season and his confidence. Miss Curtis has been patient with him and ran him for a confidence booster on the flat at Doncaster. He was staying on that day over a trip way short and it will have done him the world of good. He's six pounds lower in the ratings than when running in the Triumph hurdle and he has the class to beat these today at a great price!

Before I go on to my dad's selections I also want to flag up MIAS BOY 1435 LINGFIELD – who races on the lowest AW mark for 5 years today. Also EMPEROR'S CHOICE 1535 WARWICK should produce better today dropped another 4lbs! Finally DOESLESSTHANME 1415 WETHERBY goes well fresh has solid form from last year and is being seriously overlooked at 33-1 when I write this, he has a great each way chance.

Here are my dad's selections for today. We've picked three of the same races and the same horse!

RIVER MAIGUE 1440 KEMPTON (unplaced – £5.00)
OSCAR FORTUNE 1425 WARWICK (unplaced – £5.00)
KILLALA QUAY 1500 WARWICK (unplaced – £5.00)
DUNOWEN POINT 1355 WARWICK (unplaced – £5.00)

Result Father = -£20 and Son + £8.44

Running totals
FATHER 3-2 SON

FATHER PROFIT = £73.04
SON PROFIT = £86

Cheltenham Open Day One

The open meeting signals the return of National Hunt with a bang! Its a cracking meeting but also trappy. Not all horses are fit, the ground varies yet the action is superb. I'm away for the weekend so thought
I'd do a blog for Friday instead. Enjoy the racing whatever you gamble on!

UNCLE JIMMY 1440 CHELTENHAM (nap) – this horse is potential improver in the hurdle field this year. He kicked things off well last year defeating MEGANISI at Fontwell. He has been pitched in a class 2 level prior to this and has run creditably, especially when just being pipped by KANGAROO COURT. He has some form on this ground and could run a big race as I think the hill will bring out some of his stamina in the finish.

BALTHAZAR KING 1515 CHELTENHAM (nb) – has a good course and distance record and will relish the sound surface. Has looked better than ever over the past year and I expect another big run.

ROBERTO PEGASUS 1550 CHELTENHAM (treble) – has the potential to be a decent horse and wasn't bad on the flat. He has ran pretty well on both starts including this time last year behind THE ROMFORD PELE. The trainer has taken this before with a similar sort and he could be a springer and one to follow.

OH CRICK 1335 CHELTENHAM – is on a mark tomorrow that appeals, especially considering he won here off that mark a few years ago. Will enjoy the ground and could have been overlooked here, ran pretty well at Aintreee a couple of starts ago and was potentially a smart horse in the making, his mark has slipped but the ability is still there.
