Wincanton and Sandown

myWPEdit Image

Well what a start to the New Year Cheltenham was! The nap MON PARRAIN (25-1) went in as well as the nb PTIT ZIG (evens) and ROCK ON RUBY (5-2) brought a tasty profit on my Lucky 15!!! I know some of you had MON PARRAIN too and just wanted to say thanks to all of you who made some nice comments via Twitter on Thursday, much appreciated. I am bloody relieved to be honest, it was ages since I had put a good one up here!

So on to the first Saturday of the New Year and it isn’t great to be honest! I’m writing this on Friday as I’m treating Mrs GB to a weekend away for her birthday so will get limited time on Saturday. We’re off to pick her birthday present and then staying in the hotel we got married at, Whitley Hall, near Sheffield, it’s a beautiful place and would encourage any of you to stay there if ever you are up my neck of the woods.

The TwitterGamble guys have gone for

@Tonythetyke Somchine 1405 Wincanton

@Fernando_RFC2 Unioniste 1535 Sandown

@LiamKenniford Earthmoves 1440 Wincanton

@DazGilbert1 Walser 1415 Newcastle

So, good luck everyone again! Let’s hope we have another profitable day!

VOLT FACE 1440 WINCANTON (NAP) (unplaced = -£5.00)

I’ve been waiting for this one since @tonytheTyke tipped him up in our #twittergamble the other month. He cruised into contention and looked all over the winner but then didn’t pick up at all and ended up finishing third. The ground was heavy that day which I think was the main factor, plus it was the first run of the season for him. He’s been raised 3lbs to OR128 for that but I think he will take this and kick on to better things. Kieron Edgar takes a valuable 5lbs off too.

REBEL REBELLION 1515 WINCANTON (NB) (unplaced = -£5.00)

Another class horse dropped in grade and off top weight! He’s slowly dropping to more a reasonable mark, and is only 3lbs higher than he was when competing in top level novice chases last year. He did run off OR150 back in April at Aintree. His mark of OR143 tomorrow is not bad and with the apprentice jockey taking 7lbs off in his claim that could prove to be very valuable. I thought he ran well in the Grand Sefton for a while and had the likes of HUNT BALL and DOLATULO behind. He could make a mockery of this!

TRIOLO D’ALENE 1535 SANDOWN (treble) (3rd 16-1 = £10.00)

The last time this fella ran in a class 2 handicap he smashed JUNIOR by 4 and a half lenghts off a mark of OR139. Since then he has won a Hennessy and ran in both the Gold Cup and Grand National. He is 4lbs lower today than his Gold Cup mark, he will enjoy the ground and the trip will be fine. He has a lot of weight to carry but as I always say in these handicaps, class is class and he’s not top weight for nowt! My only concern is how terrible the yard’s horses have been running! UNIONISTE has to have a great chance but I’m not sure it will be soft enough? BERTIE BORU showed what fight and determination he has after staying on to win well last time. A fascinating race!

AMORE ALATO 1500 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

Ran in some good races last year and has some decent form in behind the likes of LAC FONTANA and IRVING who have both gone on to better things. He is nowhere near that standard but is a decent handicapper and he showed that last time when just being pipped by a well handicapped SNAKE EYES. Interesting that McCoy is on board today, having beat him. I think McCoy’s pushing and driving style will suit too. Hopeful of another good show.

My Dad’s selections are :

VOLT FACE 1440 WINCANTON (unplaced = -£5.00)

AMORE ALATO 1500 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

RELAX 1535 SANDOWN (unplaced = -£5.00)

BRICK RED 1350 SANDOWN (2nd – 4-1 = £2.50)

Father 5-4 Son

Father = -£4.66

Son = £69.50

A Soggy Saturday!

myWPEdit Image

The Bandit writes the blog from a very soggy, miserable Sheffield this morning and the ground at nearby Doncaster is going to be very testing. Not the greatest Saturday on the betting front I’ve seen and I know a few of my fellow twitterati are looking to opt pout today. However, jumps is my baby so I’ve had to have a look and hopefully I’ve found a few to whet the appetite ready for the first being meeting at Cheltenham next weekend. I always bet with my heart and have to follow the horses who I know have the class in the bag there are a few of those today, so please as always remember these are my thoughts and my horses that are close to me, so I’m not saying slap all your wages on them! I hope they run a good race and that we get a good cheer, potentially there are four decent winners here!

Sit back and enjoy the best you can on this dreary day!

OPENING BATSMAN 1440 WINCANTON (NAP) – (unplaced = -£5.00) this boy is a cliff horse for me and one I always keep an eye on and follow. To say he had a disaster last season is an understatement, yet here he is at a decent 12-1 in a competitive race, why not be a big outsider based on last year? Easy, he’s a class horse and his mark today is very eye-catching. The handicapper has given him a real chance today. He beat ROLLING ACES in the Racing Plus Chase the other year of a mark of 140 – so now you see! I just hope the rest over the summer and the cheekpieces have rekindled the old fire in his belly. Fehily will stoke him up if so!

JACK DEXTER 1425 DONCASTER (NB) – (unplaced = -£5.00) he won this race last year off a big penalty and comes here in form off the back of a veery good second on horrible ground to GORDON LORD BYRON at Ascot. He is also albs better off today with the second placed horse that day TROPICS. He also loves it here and will love the mud, and boy oh boy has it been raining here this morning! Has to have a super chance!

ROCK ON RUBY 1515 WINCANTON (TREBLE) – (3rd – 4-1 = £2.50) the star is back! A class horse in this sphere and proved that when getting beaten a head by THE NEW ONE at Aintree after a dismal showing when chasing earlier in the year. That form, plus his earlier hurdle form, is by far and away the best of offer here. He has to give lumps of weight away to IRVING but that one needs to prove he has it at this level, and I’m not sure he has it, especially based on his Cheltenham run.

POLLY PEACHUM 1405 WINCANTON – (WON 6-1 = £18.75) this one comes with a warning. She’s one I love and there are a few question marks against her today. That being the ground, she needs decent ground as you saw when she beat L’UNIQUE last year and was just pipped by SOUTHFIELD THEATRE, smart form you’ll agree! The weight she has to give away is the second question against her. However, she is a class mare and I have thought highly of her since I saw her demolish her rivals in a bumper at Warwick. Can she lug the weight? Yes, she’s going to be even better than her current mark suggests in my opinion, the ground is my sticking point today. She’s one for your notebooks though.

My Dad’s selections are :

TROPICS 1425 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)

MELVIN THE GRATE 1605 DONCASTER (unplaced = -£5.00)

Standings after Week 2

Father 1-1 Son

Badger Ales and Doncaster

Last Saturday brought a bit of luck back to the blog with TIDAL BAY and ROLLING ACES winning and the best three treble was nearly completed but CHRIS PEA GREEN was just foiled! What a performance we got again from Tidal Bay, he is such as class horse and to do it at his age, simply brilliant! I'm gearing up for Cheltenham next week and can't wait. If you're having a flutter today good luck and hopefully I can find one or two here!
ETON RIFLES 1425 DONCASTER (nap) – won this last year and comes here on the back of an eye catching reappearance at Ascot. He is back to his preferred 6f today on ground he will love. He is also getting 6lbs off JACK DEXTER in the race and that will prevent the gallant horse beating my tip.
COTTON MILL 1405 WINCANTON (nb) – this boy is smart and he showed that when being close to My Tent Or Yours on his reappearance at Newbury last year. Forget after that as he never played ball! The year before he was cruising upsides SIMONSIG at the festival before going through the side of a hurdle. He has a big chance in this today.
PANTXOA 1440 WINCANTON (treble) – this horse has just got better and better and is up to this level in my opinion. The pace of the race will suit as he stays on at the end, as will the track with the long run in. POUNGACH is the danger if he jumps better.
SWNYMOR 1535 DONCASTER – looked a class hurdler before falling last year at the last on his debut. Things then never worked out, including on his stable debut. He has some good form on soft ground on the level and I find it interesting that they opt for this rather than his engagement at Wincanton. The ground is obviously key. Smart each way chance!
JABHAAT 1500 DONCASTER – has some interesting form, notibly behind THOMAS HOBSON earlier this season, was then runner up in the race after that and comes here with a live chance. The ground is my worry, but if she handles it she has a good each way chance.
SWIFTLY DONE 1350 DONCASTER – ran well when fourth last week. Interestingly has never won over a mile but he was just getting going when prevented a run in the final furlong last week. Will love the ground again and is on the same mark, chance!
TIME FOR SPRING 1540 SANDOWN – won this last year and comes here on the same mark. He has a record of two wins from three here and must go well.
YOUNG SPARKY 1525 KELSO – I have followed this horse since he first ran and he didnt quite perform in two handicaps last year but is now put back in that sphere in a lower class and I have to stick with him!

Sunday selections

Not a bad day at all on the blog yesterday with COURT MINSTREL (4-1) and MAUREEN (7-2) winning. My big fancy MONSIEUR CADOU never got in the race and maybe the ground was too quick.
On to today, here are my best three.
YOU KNOW YOURSELF 1650 NEWCASTLE (nap) – (2nd – 17-2) won off this mark this time last year when defeating ISLA PEARL FISHER. The drying ground will bolster his chances. His run behind Monsieur Cadou last time at Haydock was ok considering the ground. Hoping for a big run.
LANDSCAPE 1400 STRATFORD (nb) – (3rd – 13-8) if this horse reproduces the form of his last run when he fell at the last at Haydock when looking like the winner, he will take this. This return to novice company should help with only DARLEY SUN a danger in my opinion.
SOUND INVESTMENT 1440 WINCANTON (treble) – (WON – 7-4) won really nicely at Taunton in January. Was then stepped up in class and was disappointing. He's dropped back to a class 4 race today, and if he copes with the ground he should run a good race.

Sunday selections

I feel like I'm going through a bad patch at the minute, especially with my naps! Yesterday was another day without my nap winning and a few of my selections really didn't run to plan! However, I still tipped up ES QUE LOVE (12-1) and CLARET CLOAK (11-4) and had places for GLEAN (6-4) and LOVE YOUR LOOKS (14-1), so it wasn't all bad. Today sees the Guineas Trials at Leopardstown and that's where my nap lies.
AROUND A POUND 1535 MARKET RASEN (nap) – (WON 6-1) saves his best for here and his only victory was here. It is very noticeable that all his best performances are here (figures of 214). He showed a glimpse of improvement here last time and I'm hoping he will return to the winners enclosure again.
JUMP CITY 1620 WINCANTON (nb) – (3rd – evens) I'm not one for putting a short priced horse as one of my best three but I have to with this one. His performance was very eye-catching against HUNT BALL last time out over 19f at Taunton. If he reproduces that he will be very tough to beat.
GREAT'S AUTRECHENE 1640 MARKET RASEN (treble) – (unplaced) has claims if he can reproduce the form of his Leicester win, the softer ground and longer trip didn't help last time!

Naps 35/156 = 22.4%
Wins 145/791 = 18.3%
Placed 212/791 = 26.8%

Sunday selections

As I prepare for a house full of three year olds coming to celebrate my daughter's birthday I thought I would think of a strategy to keep me sane. My top idea… a short blog. So here we are. I am currently doing battle with a few other top tipsters at the top of the @Tweet_naps monthly league, which you can see here. I'm hoping my nap today can take me to the top and that I can find a few more to be within a chance of winning.
To be honest too, I'm bloody sick of this weather – was hoping to do a good indepth blog on the Lincoln yesterday! Oh well, at least we know the flat is back!
Here are my top three today :
ANTON CHIGURH 16.30 CURRAGH (nap) – (STONE COLD LAST! 6-1) will love the ground and is a horse who is a stand out for a race like this. He ran well last year and his defeat of VITO VOLTERRA and MASTER OF THE ARTS prior to this on tough tracks like HAYDOCK amd CARLISLE may well give him the competitive edge over his market rivals.
FENNELL BAY 1540 LINGFIELD (nb) – (unplaced) is very well treated on his return. On a slightly higher mark than when triumphant at Royal Ascot last year. He disappointed after that and has since been gelded. That may have the desired effect and he could take this cosily.
MILARROW 1625 WINCANTON (treble) – (FELL) this one is ultra consistent and has been knocking on the door. I thought the return to better ground last time would bring out extra in him but MIDNIGHT SAIL was too good. Today could be his day.

Saturday Chances or Chancers?

The Cheltenham count down is well and truely on. Today gives us another chance to see a few potential contenders and we also have a Grand National Trial. Yesterday my nap EDMUND KEAN was very impressive and surely one to watch for the festival, the runner-up SEEDSMAN is also one to watch. I fancy a couple of David Pipe's today and I'm hoping the old boy above GILES CROSS can repeat last year's success.
Here are todays tips. I've done three Lucky 15's.
Lucky 15 Number 1
THE COCKNEY MACKEM 1515 ASCOT – (5th – 25-1) ran very well at the end of last season in some competitive chases. A superb second at the festival in the Byrne Plate behind Salut Flo shows this one has the ability. He has gone well fresh before and shouldn't be discounted back over hurdles. I've just got 25-1 on BetFred for this one which is a crazy price. Great each way chance!
CUE CARD 1550 ASCOT (nb) – (WON 15-8) this horse has bags of class and despite him stepping up in trip he still has enough ability at this distance to take this. He will never beat SPRINTER SACRE so connections' plan to change distance for me is sensible. Favourites have a cracking record in this race and the drop back in trip will suit and I think he will win comfortably.
MIAS BOY 1600 LINGFIELD – (4th – 7-1) I just can't leave this old favourite of mine and would back it to the death. He just got pipped last week at this course. He is back at a mile so will need a strong pace. I think that is what has resulted in places in the last two races is that he didn't get going soon enough. However, this is a step up in class. Must have a strong each way claim though.
SAOI 1635 LINGFIELD – (2nd – 3-1) bidding for a hat-trick and I was furious with myself for missing the first of those victories as I had backed it twice beforehand. He should appreciate the step up in trip and the form of his last two victories is strong and been franked by the runner up running to a place twice more.
Lucky 15 Number 2

VALCO DE TOUZAINE 1345 HAYDOCK – (3rd – 11-4) ran well in France and has two decent starts to his British career including a good second on his reappearance. He then ran creditably behind LORDOFTHEHOUSE next time out. Those runs should put him in with a smart chance today.
KENTFORD GREY LADY 1420 HAYDOCK (treble) – (4th – 2-1) she is a smart stayer and ran very well in third behind REVE DE SIVOLA in the Cleeve Hurdle last time. On that form she should take this today.
GILES CROSS 1455 HAYDOCK – (PU) he ran a cracker in the Welsh National and just emptied totally in the final few furlongs. At that point the stable had just come from being closed down so it was a damn good show. He won is last year ahead of NEPTUNE COLLONGES and we know what he went on to do. He loves the ground and the track and now that the stable are back with the winners again, he has a great chance to reclaim his crown. I have ran out of words for describing DENIS O'REGAN as a superb jockey and he will get the best out of him again.
SIXTY SOMETHING 1640 HAYDOCK (nap) – (unplaced) is a progressive horse as he showed when winning at Aintree and Bangor this season. He ran a bit under par last time at Doncaster behind STORM SURVIVOR but he still ran on well late in that race. O'REGAN's relaxed style will suit him and he should be crept into the race, fancy him big time to bounce back today.
Lucky 15 Number 3

AMIGO 1430 WINCANTON – (3rd – 13-8) won over 3 miles last time at Chpestow in a dogged style and he has been raised 3lbs for that success. With heavy ground again on the cards he should be thereabouts at the finish up the long Wincanton finish.
DIAMONDS RETURN 1615 WINCANTON – (PU) won three on the bounce at the end of last season including over course and distance and ran well last time out. Returns today and could continue that progressive trend, hopeful of a big run.
REAL MILAN 1405 ASCOT – (PU) whilst ROCKY CREEK is a worthy favourite after his impressive win at Warwick last time my selection has done nothing wrong so far in two novice chases and will revel in the mud. This is a big step up but he looks a smart one.
ASHKAZAR 1440 ASCOT – (LAST!!!!!) this old dog infuriates me! He can be absolutely class and was that at Cheltenham last season. He has so much ability but it depends how he feels. He'll either run well and give them something to think about or he won't be bothered and will be pulled up. I'm hoping for the first one at a pretty decent price.
So, quite a few selections today and I'm more than hopeful of my top three. I just have to say that THE COCKNEY MACKEM has such a good chance in my opinion today and I have put a little extra on him each way!
If you are having a bet, please do so within your means. If you like what you have read please give the blog a retweet or a follow. I do really appreciate people reading the blog as it takes a while to do.
Best of luck everyone and enjoy the racing!

Welsh National Tip

Well not too bad a day on the blog yesterday with DRAWNFROMTHEPAST (11-8) and BALLYGARVEY (9-4) winning for us. Was a shame that the nap DOOR BOY ran so poorly again, think that will be the last of my money he gets for a while. Anyway, on to today with the re-arranged Welsh National to look forward to plus some good supporting cards at Sandown and Wincanton. My tip for big one is above – I'mvsure you can guess who he is before you read below.
Here are my best three bets for today, plus a few others to watch out for.
LANDSCAPE 1405 WINCANTON (nap) – (unplaced) ran well last week when winning at Taunton and isn't penalised from that race. Harry Derham can also claim 5lbs today rather than 3 last week, so he's 2lb better off! The handicapper will surely hit him after this so it will be wise to get on him today. He's well handicapped on ground he'll like and over the right distance. He must have a huge chance.
SWNYMOR 1335 CHEPSTOW (nb) – (FELL) was a decent prospect on the flat and was impressive when winning first time out at Newbury. He really didn't have to beat much but the manner in which he did it was appealing. He should be thereabouts in this. The Nicholls runner is the unknown quantity!!
GILES CROSS 1520 CHEPSTOW (treble) e/w – (PU) what a great horse this is. It loves the mud and really battles well. He's been runner up in this twice already. The trip, ground and course will all suit. He has a weight to burden that only a select few have won with, but this boy is brave and will keep battling up the hill. Denis O'Regan gets on well with him and won well on him at Haydock last season. He's a great jockey and will keep him at the front going steady. I really think he can defy this weight and I think is a banker for a place at the least!
I also fancy the chances of HEY BIG SPENDER 1540 SANDOWN (unplaced) today. His run at Ascot wasn't great but he will have needed that and I think he can win this today off a mark he has won off before. I am also going for a Paul Nicholls treble with the following three :
KEPPOLS HILL 1300 CHEPSTOW – (WON 10-11) has been unlucky on both occasions previous and really should have won them both but for jumping errors. Today is the day!
ROGER BEANTOWN 1445 CHEPSTOW – (FELL) ran poorly at Cheltenham last time but his previous run here gives him a sniff and an extended distance should play to his strengths. Takes this before tackling fences.
GRANDIOSO 1330 WINCANTON – (2nd – 11-4) won well over course and distance last time and I think he will do the same again getting a run in off Tony Star.
Finally I'm having a flutter on WILLIAMS WISHES, (WON evens) POET (unplaced) AND SOFTSONG (unplaced) at SANDOWN all who I think have got great chances again today to take the money.
Well I hope there are a few winners in this lot today or I will be very disappointed, particiularly the best three. Remember these are my selections and I'm by no means an expert! If you are having a flutter, remember to do so within your means. Enjoy the racing and scream out loud for GILES CROSS!!

Cheltenham and Doncaster

Saturday racing is on us again. I'm a little late this morning due to a stonking hangover from the staff xmas party last night. It's been an interesting week in the racing world with the Kauto Star saga. I doubt very much that Clive Smith and the Nicholls yard will be afiliated anymore, sounds like a right tug of war and a bit petty to be honest.
Anyway on to my selections for today :
Cristal Bonus 1430 Cheltenham (nap) (PU – inj) is a very good horse and even more so on heavy ground. Really fancy him to take another big race for Nicholls and Walsh. He is a progressive horse and I don't think Walk On will stay up the hill.
According to Trev 1355 Cheltenham – (unplaced)Coneygree is a decent horse and is feared the most, but I know this fella will stay all day and in this ground he will have to.
Zarkandar 1505 Cheltenham (nb) -(won 6-5) receiving 4lb from the other main rivals and a previous run when he was impressive at Wincanton should see him prevail. I am getting more and more impressed with him each time I see him run.
Garynella 1320 Cheltenham – (3rd 11-4) is a new recruit to the Pipe yard and looks a decent prospect on paper. Hoping he's better than these and will start his career over here with a victory.
I also like the look of So Fine 1300 Doncaster (e/w),(unplaced) Divers 1410 Doncaster, (unplaced) Counsel 1445 Doncaster (e/w) (unplaced) and an old favourite of mine who has bags of ability and could take his race at a big price Door Boy 1520 Doncaster (treble).(unplaced)

Good luck if you're having a bet and remember these are my selections, you don't have to follow them. If you are having a flutter, please bet within your means.

November Handicap

So here we are, the final flat meeting of another season. What a season it has been too, we have been treated to the fabulous Frankel, an attempt at the Triple Crown with Camelot and a seven win streak in a meeting by Richard Hughes. Hughsie wins the Jockey's title for the first time and deservedly so. Who also can begrudge John Gosden being crowned champion trainer after his impressive season.
Now we move to the jump season, and whilst I really enjoy the flat I really love the jumpers! The form is a little more consistent and there are some fantastic handicaps to look forward to. Today is also my birthday so I'm hoping my tips get me a couple of winners today. I was really stuck between three today for my nap. I really give my best three great chances of success today!
Baby Mix 1450 Wincanton (nap) -(unplaced) is a really classy horse but struggled giving weight to Dodging Bullets at Cheltenham last time. He doesn't seem to perform there either and this track may suit him similar to his success at Kempton last year when he destroyed them.
Diamond Harry 1525 Wincanton (nb) – (PU) this one has all the class in the race and has been dropped something like 16lb for a couple of disappointing runs. He goes well fresh and my only worry is whether he is back to his old self.
Eton Rifles 1510 Doncaster (treble) – (WON 7-1) has ran back into form recently and whilst he is a soft ground horse today's conditions should suit him well. He ran well in defeat last time and I reckon today is the day he will win.
As well as my top three these are the others I fancy today.
Tony Star 1415 Wincanton (4th)
Cubanita 1400 Doncaster (WON 8-1)
Kirthill 1435 Doncaster (unplaced)
Irish Heartbeat 1545 Doncaster (unplaced)
Imperial Circus 1535 Sandown (2nd 5-1)
Merigo 1405 Kelso (unplaced)
Thanks for Coming 1320 Sandown (2nd 11-2)
Chasers Chance 1310 Wincanton (unplaced)
Kartanian 1500 Sandown (unplaced)

Good luck everyone and remember to bet within your means.
